Is Their Foundation Solid Enough To Build On: An Investigation Into The Information-Seeking Skills And Self-Efficacy Levels Of New Nursing Students, Kimberly J. Whalen, Patricia J. Mileham

Library Faculty Presentations

Researchers at a mid-sized, Midwest, faith-based university used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pretest posttest design to gather data from newly enrolled nursing students in a baccalaureate, masters and doctorate in nursing practice program. Literature regarding confidence levels, self-efficacy and information literacy skills was reviewed. Specific tools to assess confidence and self-efficacy of information literacy skills were explored. The 28-item Information Literacy Self-Efficacy Scale (ILSES) developed in 2006 by Serap Kurbanoglu was used in fall 2012, spring 2013 and fall 2013 to gather data from over 200 newly enrolled nursing students. Analysis of self-reported information literacy skills and self-efficacy levels …

Open Access And The Public Library Of Medicine, Summary Of A Presentation By Dr. Harold Varmus, Michael J. Miller 2014 Queens College, CUNY

Open Access And The Public Library Of Medicine, Summary Of A Presentation By Dr. Harold Varmus, Michael J. Miller

Urban Library Journal

Dr. Varmus opened his comments with a vignette regarding his own foray into the publishing world. Based upon his exposure to Cornell's arXiv.org, (the evolutionary result of Ginsbarg's "e-print archives" for electronic research publications for physics materials), he eventually pursued similar means of electronic research publishing in the areas of biology and medicine. Though challenged by the academy, these efforts guided by accompanying constructive criticisms led to the development of PubMed Central(tm). ...

Making Electronic Databases Functional On The Library Website: A Practical Approach, Kanu A. Nagra

Publications and Research

This paper presents a process on making electronic databases functional on the library website for on and off campus access for optimum use. It covers the steps after the price, license terms and conditions are finalized between library and vendor and the decision is made by library and subject experts to subscribe or purchase the database. Textbook Alternatives: Library Supported Options For Students And Faculty, Michele D. Behr, Julie Hayward 2014 Western Michigan University

Textbook Alternatives: Library Supported Options For Students And Faculty, Michele D. Behr, Julie Hayward

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

The issue of course textbooks continues to be a challenge in higher education. For students the primary concern is the skyrocketing costs: spending several hundred dollars for required textbooks per semester at a time when tuition and fees continue to rise. Consequently, students are borrowing, renting or simply forgoing purchasing textbooks to alleviate some of the financial burden. For those students who are unable to purchase textbooks, are they still receiving the same high quality education? Although faculty members empathize with students’ frustrations concerning textbook prices, they may not be aware of the alternative resources and services offered by the …

Open Access: A Model For Sharing Published Conservation Research, Peter D. Verheyen, Priscilla Anderson, Whitney Baker, Beth Doyle

Peter D Verheyen

The conservation field has articulated the importance of publishing our research to disseminate information and further the aims of conservation. Article X of AIC’s Code of Ethics states that conservators should “contribute to the evolution and growth of the profession, a field of study that encompasses the liberal arts and the natural sciences” in part by “sharing of information and experience with colleagues, adding to the profession’s written body of knowledge.” Our Guidelines for Practice state “the conservation professional should recognize the importance of published information that has undergone formal peer review,” because, as Commentary 2.1 indicates, “publication in peer-reviewed …

Mapping The Social Sciences Landscape: A Way Forward, David A. Pendlebury

Library Events

The use of bibliometric data for the analysis of research performance in the social sciences presents significant challenges, especially in some fields whose publication patterns differ markedly from the sciences. For example, the book literature is a more important vehicle for scholarly communication in many social sciences fields than it is in the sciences and, therefore, should not be excluded from examination. A brief review of this and other issues will be presented as well as those that affect attempts to map research activity in the social sciences. Mapping the specialty and higher-level structure of scholarly research and detecting changes …

Information retrieval is the process of finding information from an unstructured collection of data. The process of information retrieval involves building an index, commonly called an inverted file. As part of the inverted file, information retrieval algorithms often stem words to a common root. Stemming involves reducing a document term to its root. There are many ways to stem a word: affix removal and successor variety are two common categories of stemmers. The Porter Stemming Algorithm is a suffix removal stemmer that operates as a rule-based process on English words. We can think of stemming as a way to cluster …

The University Archives has become an integral part of an academic institution. It has met its role as the repository for the rich history of an institution. However, there is an opportunity to collaborate with another unit within academic libraries. The introduction and growth of institutional repositories (IR) on college campuses has provided an opportunity for university archives. An IR’s goal is to preserve the intellectual output of an institution. This is …

Beyond Satisfaction: Understanding And Promoting The Instructor-Librarian Relationship, Margaret Bausman, Sarah Laleman Ward, John Pell

Publications and Research

This article reports upon the assessment and research activities undertaken by a research group of faculty librarians at Hunter College regarding the perceptions, awareness, and usage of library services by non-librarian faculty members. Given the initial directive to measure faculty satisfaction with library services, the research group developed an ongoing action-research protocol to pursue more meaningful assessments of faculty awareness and use of library services and resources. The researchers employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, gathering data through informal information groups with faculty members and through an online survey measuring faculty awareness of library resources and services (Faculty Awareness of …
