Post-Facts: Information Literacy And Authority After The 2016 Election, Stefanie Bluemle

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This article addresses the challenge that post-truth politics poses to teaching authority in information literacy. First, it isolates an element of the post-truth phenomenon, an element it calls post-facts, to elucidate why teaching source evaluation is not, by itself, an antidote to fake news or other evidence of Americans’ media illiteracy. Second, it addresses the implications of post-facts politics for the concept of authority as defined by the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, drawing on the work of Patrick Wilson and Max Weber to illustrate which elements of authority librarians must rethink due to recent events.

Panel: Serving Different Populations, Nastasha E. Johnson, Samantha Walsh, Moushumi Chakraborty, Mandy Havert, Roman Koshykar

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Meeting the needs of graduate students systematically and intentionally can be a daunting strategic initiative. The students’ interests, expertise, and career objectives can vary greatly. Understanding and addressing gaps in their knowledge can an insurmountable obstacle, seemingly, as well. Politically there may be silos to contend and barriers to perception of “what libraries can do.” We would like to propose a panel discussion where different institutions discuss the wins and losses of reaching different graduate populations. The objective of the panel discussion is to openly share the strategies that have worked for different populations, as well as strategies that can …

Weaving Connections: Utilizing A Library-Social Work Partnership To Build Information Literacy Skills, David Vess, Laura Trull

Libraries

While evidence continues to build that information literacy (IL) is taught across university and college curricula at all student levels (Junsbai, Lowe & Tagge, 2016), challenges connecting IL to those curricula in meaningful ways persist (Julien, Gross, & Latham, 2018; Klomsri & Tedre, 2016; Bombaro 2013). Blending IL into social work education beyond traditional one-shot library sessions also remains a challenge as evidenced by the dearth of literature demonstrating sound instruction and assessment practices of IL in social work programs (Bausman & Ward, 2016; Kayser, Bowers, Jiang, & Bussey 2013; Johnson, Whitfield, & Grohe, 2011; Ismail, 2009; Brustman & Bernnard …

The Spy Next Door: Intentional Misuse Of Access To Information, Data Security & Society’S Diminishing Ideology Of Privacy, Anjeli Leamen

Western Research Forum

Much has been written regarding the vulnerability of privacy in the current age of big data. However, little has been written about the actions of individuals, and the intentional misuse of access to friends and family members’ private information (i.e snooping). In contrast to government or corporate misuse of information, these kinds of privacy breaches are not for financial gain, surveillance or identity theft. Rather this misuse of information is purely out of curiosity about the personal lives of friends, family and acquaintances. The purpose of this paper is to not only examine the realm of snooping, but also …

Why Wikipedia Often Overlooks Stories Of Women In History, Lara Nicosia, Tamar Carroll 2018 Rochester Institute of Technology

Why Wikipedia Often Overlooks Stories Of Women In History, Lara Nicosia, Tamar Carroll

Articles

Wikipedia's reliance on a volunteer editing base has resulted in a gender bias both in the quantity and quality of content around women. With less than 20% of Wikipedia's editors identifying as women, only 30% of biographical entries have been written about women and entries on women tend to be shorter and more focused on relationships and family roles than entries on men. This article explores the causes of Wikipedia's gender bias and offers ways that both individuals and institutions can help improve Wikipedia's content around women.
