From 1965 to 1972, the United States was in the grip of a new wave of black student activism through protests and demonstrations at college and university campuses from coast to coast. Academic institutions were deluged with demands for increasing black faculty hires, developing black studies programs/departments, and increasing the number of black student admissions. Kent State University was one of the thousands of colleges and universities challenged to address the demands of a demographic who felt their civil rights were under siege within the walls of academic establishments. This collection includes a variety of underground newspapers, various pamphlets and flyers, and various documents related to political activities, social justice, American involvement in the Vietnamese conflict, and other events during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Collected by William “Bill” Hamilton, a 1995 graduate of the University of South Florida, these materials illustrate the topics of discussion from that time and how the alternative and underground press characterized the rapidly changing social landscape. Most of the underground papers and miscellaneous documents originated from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Mr. Hamilton donated these papers to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library …

This collection consists of more than 450 panels of the “Muggs and Skeeter” cartoon drawn by Wallace Bond “Wally” Bishop, a longtime resident of St. Petersburg. Wally Bishop and his wife, Louise C. Bishop became leaders in a variety of social circles and cultural organizations in the greater St. Petersburg area. In the late 1930s, they bought the elaborate mansion constructed by C. Perry Snell on Brightwaters Boulevard at the mouth of Coffee Pot Bayou. In Louise’s later life, her profound concern for ethics in undergraduate education led to the establishment of the Bishop Center for Ethical Leadership and Civic …
