A Digital Quandary: Limited Vs Broadly Accessible Collections, Andrea Jackson, Christine Wiseman
Oberlin Digital Scholarship Conference
The AUC Woodruff Library has been successful in creating digital collections open broadly and widely to anyone in the world with an internet connection. While substantially increasing the use of collections for digital humanities scholarship, archivists have noticed some frustration from researchers about limited accessibility of two of the repository’s most popular collections which are only accessible in the Reading Room – the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. and Tupac Amaru Shakur Collections. Staff from the AUC Woodruff Library’s Archives Research Center and Digital Services Unit discussed this quandary with conference attendees by sharing experiences, and best practices for …

2016 Annual Report Of The Work In Imsa’S Archives, Marti Guarin, Christian D. Nokkentved
Archives' Annual Report
This year the focus of the Archives has been on further developing several collections and making them available on Digital Commons [DC], work that has been made possible by the expertise and creativity of Jean Bigger and her work on DC. In addition work has continued to strengthen collections in general, to build new collections, and to make the Archives more accessible to administration, students, faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as to others in Illinois, USA and the world. To that end the volunteer staff set four sets of goals for the year, which are set out below …
Say Yes To Digital Surrogates: Strengthening The Archival Record In The Postcustodial Era, 2016 University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Say Yes To Digital Surrogates: Strengthening The Archival Record In The Postcustodial Era, Cyndi Shein, Emily Lapworth
Journal of Western Archives
Shein and Lapworth demonstrate how employing “scan-and-return” practices to strengthen and diversify archival collections is a creative and responsible way to provide researchers with equitable and ongoing access to a more inclusive and democratic historical record. The authors review some of the main archival theories and practices of the postcustodial era to show how their position is built on professional values and widely-accepted premises. They explain how and why UNLV Special Collections has joined a community of practice that validates stewardship of digital surrogates in support of the preeminent mandate of archives to preserve and provide broad access to cultural …

The Wild West No More: Preserving 40 Years Of Electronic Records At The University Of Wyoming American Heritage Center, Tyler G. Cline
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The University of Wyoming American Heritage Center (AHC) provides access to all unrestricted collections, per its Mission Statement. However, over the past 40 years, the AHC has acquired born-digital collection material on physical media that it has been unable to provide access to. In the summer of 2014, the AHC undertook a project to migrate all born-digital records to a secure server, thereby creating the means to provide access to the material. After surveying collections databases and finding aids, the Digital Archivist and a graduate intern successfully ingested 346 pieces of digital media from 75 collections. The project was successful …

Our Rich History: Covington Ladies Home Celebrating 130th Year, Serving Senior Women With Quality Care, Bill Stolz
University Libraries' Staff Publications
2016 marks the 130th year of operation for the Covington Ladies Home located at 702 Garrard Street in the Licking Riverside Historic District. The organization, originally called the Home for Aged and Indigent Women (still visible in the stone above the main entrance today), was founded in 1886 by Covington resident Ellen B. Dietrick, an early advocate for equality and education for women, with the goal of providing care for women over the age of 60. Today, 130 years later, the mission of the Covington Ladies Home is the same, “to serve senior women, regardless of their economic circumstances, by …
Managing The Merger Of Archives And Special Collections : Setting Our Own Agenda., 2016 University of Louisville
Managing The Merger Of Archives And Special Collections : Setting Our Own Agenda., Caroline Daniels, Delinda Stephens Buie, Rachel I. Howard, Elizabeth E. Reilly
Elizabeth Reilly
At the University of Louisville a merger of archives and special collections had been discussed for decades, but for a variety of reasons, always dismissed. There were practical reasons in favor of it, but there were some significant internal barriers that made it easier to keep things as they were. But in 2012 things changed. Heightened appreciation for the traditional and emerging roles of special collections in university libraries, institutional budget concerns, key retirements and gradual replacement of people resistant to change, and an inclusive approach to planning, all aligned to make the merger seem like a natural progression for …
Struggle For Survival: The History And Ethics Of Living Collections, 2016 Buffalo State College
Struggle For Survival: The History And Ethics Of Living Collections, Emily Simms
Museum Studies Theses
This thesis explores the ethics involved with institutions caring for living collections worldwide such as zoos, national parks, and aquariums. There are several main concerns that these institutions are currently facing: poaching, keeper negligence, euthanasia within zoos themselves, and public opinion. The moral issues engrained can help guide keepers of these collections to take better care of the animals for which they are responsible. It also explores specific cases in the past in which living collections have managed serious issues and how they resolved these issues.

Archival Processing Science, 2016 Wayne State University
Archival Processing Science, Stefanie A. Caloia
Reuther Library Scholarly Publications
Archival collections come in all sizes, formats, and subjects, and it is impossible for any archival education program to cover all situations that professional archivists encounter. Proper planning is essential to processing and paramount when a collection comprises hundreds of linear feet, yet it is often difficult to develop and implement processing plans when drawing on your experience alone. This presentation details a method of conducting a pre-archival processing survey that can be useful through all processing stages, as well as some additional tips on handling archival materials.

University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center implemented Archivists’ Toolkit in 2009-2010 and ArchivesSpace in 2015. We continue to explore and develop procedures, policies, and uses of AS. Based primarily in University Archives accessioning and description needs, this presentation outlines some new ArchivesSpace functions we have implemented or plan to implement within the next year; previous functions available in AT, but not yet (fully) implemented in AS that we have developed short-term workarounds for; AS functions we have explored and decided not to use; and workflows developed with AT functionality that don’t work completely with AS and that may need …
