A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison 2009 University of Central Florida

A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

In this article, we respond to Singer’s (2005) challenge to sport management scholars to consider race-based epistemologies in conducting certain kinds of research in the field, as we use critical race theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Hiring Report Card (HRC) (Harrison & Yee, 2009). The BCA HRC was created as a result of the access discrimination that has historically taken place in college sport (Brooks & Althouse, 2000; Cunningham & Sagas, 2005), which has consequently contributed to the underrepresentation of racial minorities in the head coach position in college football. The HRC …

Language, Power And Politics (Fall 2010 Syllabus), Adam Hodges 2009 Carnegie Mellon University

Language, Power And Politics (Fall 2010 Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

In this course, we will examine the integral role language plays in politics; and, more generally, how power operates in linguistic practices and political interaction. As we critically examine how language is used to articulate, maintain and subvert relations of power in society, emphasis will be placed on language in the media, the political rhetoric associated with war, and the construction of ‘truth’ in politics. We will also consider the role of ethnographic analysis in aiding our understandings of how social actors use and (re)interpret political language. The course will provide you with a foundation for understanding how language shapes …

The Multidimensional Structure Of Gottfredson And Hirschi's Concept Of Self-Control, Gang Lee 2009 University of Texas at El Paso

The Multidimensional Structure Of Gottfredson And Hirschi's Concept Of Self-Control, Gang Lee

Gang Lee

The purpose of this study is to determine the unidimensionality of Grasmick’s operationalization of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s criminality inducing the concept of low self-control. By applying confirmatory factor analysis procedures that incorporate advances in the application, the proposed six factor model and two alternative models were examined suggesting that Grasmick’s low self-control scale actually contains 6 distinguishable factors, not a single factor. The factors identified to be consistent with the six factor model were impulsivity, simple tasks, risk seeking, physical activities, self-centered, and temper.

Language In Society (Winter 2010 Syllabus), Adam Hodges 2009 Stanford University

Language In Society (Winter 2010 Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

In this course, we will examine how language and society affect each other. We will place a significant focus on language use in our own society to explore regional and social differences in speech. We will examine the attitudes and ideologies people have about languages, language varieties, and their speakers (e.g. issues of prestige and stigma). We will explore how speakers use language to construct identities and interact with different audiences. And we will examine how language itself often becomes a political issue (e.g. in debates over language and education). The course will use a mixture of lectures, class discussions, …

Luis FLORES

Transparent obsidian artifacts have been reported for the northern Lake Titicaca Basin. Based on instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) of these artifacts a distinct chemical group was identified. Yet, the location of the source of transparent obsidian in the southern Andes remained unreported in the archaeological literature. This paper reports on the chemical composition and geographic location of a source of transparent obsidian from the Macusani region of Peru. Through the use of INAA and portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) we demonstrate that Macusani obsidian or macusanite comprises (at least) two chemical groups. One of these groups was used for making …

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer 2009 Temple University School of Law

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

The approximately two million gay and lesbian elders in the United States are an underserved and understudied population. At a time when gay men and lesbians enjoy an unprecedented degree of social acceptance and legal protection, many elders face the daily challenges of aging isolated from family, detached from the larger gay and lesbian community, and ignored by mainstream aging initiatives. Drawing on materials from law, history, and social theory, this book integrates practical proposals for reform with larger issues of sexuality and identity. Beginning with a summary of existing demographic data and offering a historical overview of pre-Stonewall views …

Camp Delta, Google Earth And The Ethics Of Remote Sensing In Archaeology, Adrian Myers 2009 Stanford University

Camp Delta, Google Earth And The Ethics Of Remote Sensing In Archaeology, Adrian Myers

Adrian Myers

With easy access to satellite imagery through free applications such as Google Earth, it is now financially feasible for archaeologists to undertake remote survey in areas that are difficult or impossible to access in person. But there are ethical concerns inherent in the use of remotely sensed images, as Google Earth might be seen as a panoptic viewing technology that leaves no voice to those being viewed. Through a virtual investigation of the Camp Delta prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, I discuss methodological and theoretical aspects of the use of Google Earth in archaeology.
