Perfectionism And Religious Well-Being: Exploring The Mediating Effects Of Sense Of Belonging Among Christian College Students, Charity L. Frazier
Perfectionism And Religious Well-Being: Exploring The Mediating Effects Of Sense Of Belonging Among Christian College Students, Charity L. Frazier
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Perfectionism has predominately been linked to lower relational and religious well-being among young adults. Perfectionists who report more positive relationships with others, however, tend to experience better outcomes such as life satisfaction, lower self-criticism, and greater religious well-being. The perfectionism social disconnection model (PSDM) provides a framework for understanding how relational factors, such as a sense of belonging, may contribute to divergent outcomes among perfectionists. The purpose of this study was to explore (1) whether adaptive and maladaptive aspects of perfectionism have opposite effects on belonging and religious well-being, and (2) whether perfectionists who feel they belong experience greater religious …
The Role Of Spiritual Fitness On Burnout And Organizational Commitment In High-Stress Environments, Amy Mcdonald Stevens
The Role Of Spiritual Fitness On Burnout And Organizational Commitment In High-Stress Environments, Amy Mcdonald Stevens
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the relationships between burnout, spiritual fitness, and organizational commitment in National Guard servicemembers. Recent deployments and chronic stressors have resulted in an emergence of mental health concerns, burnout, and turnover intentions in this population. Research has indicated that elements of spirituality address these concerns and suggest that more spiritual individuals are more resilient, less susceptible to burnout, and find positive meaning in work. This study examined these variables using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach & Jackson, 1981), the Organizational Commitment Scale (Meyer & Allen, 1997), and the SOCOM Spiritual Fitness Scale (Alexander et al., 2020). Correlations …
A Quantitative Examination Of The Relationship Between Workplace Environment, Religion, And The Stigma Of Mental Health On Openness To Mental Health Services, Cooper Ann Hove
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Individuals within the workplace experience stressors that can negatively impact their health long term if not effectively managed. The level of stress within the workplace environment, religious beliefs, and mental health stigma may affect employees differently in their openness to receive mental health services. Research lacks data to understand the gap between employees struggling with mental health and unused, available resources in organizations. Most current research focuses on implementing mental health interventions, with the highest number of studies focusing on police officers' and nurses' experiences. This study was a quantitative, correlational study to gather participants with prior work experience of …

What Was The Real Trouble With The Troubles? The Lived Experience Of Attending A Maintained School In Northern Ireland During The Troubles, Lisabeth Daniels Sweeney
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Immigrant parents from Northern Ireland (NI) interact with American schools differently than most other immigrant cultures. The current generation of NI immigrant parents grew up amidst a sectarian conflict known as the Troubles. This cohort also attended Catholic maintained schools in NI, where corporal punishment was a daily experience. These life experiences can potentially shape an individual’s worldview and view of education. This qualitative study aimed to understand the lived experience of attending maintained schools in NI during the Troubles and how this phenomenon may have shaped NI parents’ view of education. A phenomenological approach using a qualitative survey and …
American Church Leaders’ Responses To Mental Illness, Erica Elaine Harris
American Church Leaders’ Responses To Mental Illness, Erica Elaine Harris
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study enlightens the experience between the development of mental illness and the help-seeking of Christian church leaders. Eleven church leaders in Dallas, Texas, were asked to describe their experiences with a mental disorder as church leaders. The theory guiding this study was Heidegger’s phenomenological theory. Heidegger’s phenomenological approach was the best for exploring the lived experiences of pastors as this theory supports that a person’s experience cannot be examined separately from their world system. Three research questions focused on the occasion of a mental health episode while in the role of a pastor in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, …

Cultural Conflict For Veterans Transitioning To Civilian Life, Adam Francis
Cultural Conflict For Veterans Transitioning To Civilian Life, Adam Francis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
United States military veterans face many challenges while transitioning from the military to civilian life that require a new civilian perspective to navigate the differences between these experiences. Previous research is focused on psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological issues veterans face (Ainspan et al., 2018; Coulthard & Lee, 2022; Romaniuk et al., 2020). The military and the Veterans Administration (VA) have primarily focused on veterans achieving employment and education after leaving the military. Being in the military is highly stressful and requires working closely with others (Krishnakumar et al., 2019), and reflects a collectivist nature (Bongioanni, 2022; Verkamp, 2021). Civilian culture …

Systemic Barriers In Victims Of Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children (Csec), Caitlin Brooks
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC), also known as child sex trafficking is a topic trending amongst the media both nationally and internationally. Within the United States, numerous agencies such as law enforcement (LE), the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), the Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS), Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs), and others tend to become involved in child trafficking cases in some capacity. This qualitative study aims to fill a gap in research by investigating how the child-serving system creates its own barriers, leaving child victims without services. Two data collection methods were utilized to obtain which …

Millennials And Work-Life Balance: Comparisons Across Generations, Lanisha Janise Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The entrance of Millennials into the workforce has sparked the interest of many researchers in understanding what this generation values within the workplace, how to attract them to jobs and organizations, and how to retain their employment. This unique generation, who has been characterized as one of the most high-maintenance within the workforce, prone to job-hopping, and highly educated, has made it clear that their perspective on work is much different from generations before them. Work-life balance, specifically, has been a determining factor for Millennials when choosing a job and deciding how long to stay there. This study seeks to …

Positively Reinforcing Parent Communication With Students In Special Education Classrooms For The Reduction Of Attention Maintained Maladaptive Behaviors In A School Setting, Jennifer Rose Harmon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A mixed-method multiple-baseline experimental design explored the relationship of frequency of attention-maintained maladaptive behaviors and positive parent communication in a fourth through sixth grade special education classroom using visual analysis and a Wampold-Warsham (Wampold & Brown, 2005) statistical design. The obtained result of -11.021 was found to be the 6th highest mean difference across all 24 possible outcomes, resulting in a p-value of 6/24 = 0.25, which is not statistically significant with α = .05 (one-tailed). However, when looking at the visual analysis of the multiple baseline design graphs, one can see a clear decrease in each of the participants …
The Effects Of Secure, Ambivalent, And Avoidant Attachment Styles On Number Of Codependent Behaviors And Relationship Satisfaction, Brittany Nicole Collins
The Effects Of Secure, Ambivalent, And Avoidant Attachment Styles On Number Of Codependent Behaviors And Relationship Satisfaction, Brittany Nicole Collins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Attachment is an important area of study within psychology as individuals learn how to attach and connect with others from childhood into adulthood. An individual’s attachment to parents and caregivers can impact how the individual is able to attach, connect, and trust others in relationships with friends and romantic partners. These attachment styles can impact an individual’s ability to connect and trust in romantic relationships. Examining secure, ambivalent, and avoidant styles; codependent behaviors; and relationship satisfaction is important as codependency continues to be a growing concern, causing unhealthy relationship patterns to develop. Fifty adult participants were recruited from Facebook groups …
Unpacking The Upper Echelon’S Cognitive Black Box: A Qualitative Study Of Selective Attention And Decision Making In Senior Executives, Jon Matthew Hart
Unpacking The Upper Echelon’S Cognitive Black Box: A Qualitative Study Of Selective Attention And Decision Making In Senior Executives, Jon Matthew Hart
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, senior executives face a myriad of difficult decisions. These decisions are often accompanied by a barrage of stimuli, which can complicate decision-making processes. To traverse these challenges, those in the upper echelons of leadership must manage their selective attention well, make clear sense of unfolding events, and act upon them in ways that maximize organization outcomes. However, there is a gap in research around how the upper echelons of leadership manage their selective attention in high-stimuli decision scenarios. This qualitative grounded theory research addresses this gap by studying the cognitive processes used …

Cognitive Appraisal, Workplace Social Courage, And Psycap, Quinn Denny
Cognitive Appraisal, Workplace Social Courage, And Psycap, Quinn Denny
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study responds to calls for empirical investigation of courage as well as the discovery of positive psychological capital (PsyCap) antecedents. Courage and PsyCap are considered positive constructs associated with beneficial workplace outcomes. As an example, Workplace Social Courage (WSC) predicts organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). PsyCap is robustly correlated with performance outcomes, well-being, and sustainability. For its societal appeal, courage is not yet robustly validated. Further, interventions have demonstrated resultant increases in PsyCap, yet little is known of its antecedent variables. Also, to be discovered, are what variables mediate WSC. These gaps in research present opportunity for additional empirical investigation …
Shame, Stigma, And Callousness: A Moderated Mediation Study Of Sex Offender Empathy Strength, Robert M. Ferow
Shame, Stigma, And Callousness: A Moderated Mediation Study Of Sex Offender Empathy Strength, Robert M. Ferow
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Callous, lacking sympathy, heartless, and cold are but a few synonyms for people that demonstrate a deficit in empathy. Psychologists, criminologists, and sociologists have tried to explain this phenomenon of callousness, or lack of empathy found in criminals for hundreds of years. Issues of definitions of empathy, personality disorders, character flaws, and even neurobiological issues have been studied in their relation to empathy. Theories of criminology have been presented to explain the reasons for lack of empathy. However, as of yet, no conclusive findings demonstrate the order or function in loss of empathy strength. This study will endeavor to describe …

Philosophical Psychopathology And Individuation: The Archetype Of The Self And Rediscovering Personality, Alyc Jordan-Crump Rideout
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Psychopathology has been associated to personality in trait characteristics as a contributing factor to mental illness, but the degree to which personality development as an influence in mental pathologies remains under researched at a phenomenological level. Thus, leaving a significant gap in psychopathological clinical literature on the functional role personality development is associated with psychopathology. In the modern era, the medical symptomology model of mental illness set by the DSM serves as the justification for psychotropic medication prescription as well as the diagnostic criteria for mental pathology but, there is limitations to functional ideals of mental health based off diagnostic …
