The Intersection Of The Sibling Relationship, Parental Divorce, And Mental Health Symptoms, Taylor A. Bufton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Although sibling relationships and parental divorce are two popular areas of study, few research studies have focused on their relationship. In this quantitative study, the researcher explored the relationship between sibling relationship quality and parental divorce conflict, as well as the relationship between perceived sibling relationship quality during parental divorce and mental health in adulthood. The participant sample included 64 adults who experienced parental divorce in childhood with at least one sibling. Participants were required to complete a demographics questionnaire, the Post-Divorce Parental Conflict Scale (PPCS), the Lifespan Sibling Relationship Scale (LSRS), and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Worker Engagement In Faith-Based Nonprofit Organizations: The Roles Of Spirituality, Resilience, And Perceived Organizational Support For Engaging The Workforce, Beverly Webb Dec 2023

Worker Engagement In Faith-Based Nonprofit Organizations: The Roles Of Spirituality, Resilience, And Perceived Organizational Support For Engaging The Workforce, Beverly Webb

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Nonprofit organizations rely heavily upon volunteerism and skilled employees willing to accept lower salaries to accomplish an organization's mission. Limited funding and surging needs in the nonprofit sector require a greater understanding of engaged workers to fully engage the workforce, where losses for nonengaged workers were estimated in the trillions globally. Research has supported the influence of spirituality, resilience, or perceived organizational support on worker engagement in for-profit and nonprofit organizations in varied settings. This study examined the relationships between spirituality, resilience, perceived organizational support, and worker engagement in Christian faith-based nonprofit organizations. Data was collected from two Christian faith-based …

Sisters In Harm: A Phenomenological Study Examining Active-Duty Military Women’S Lived Experiences Of Military Sexual Assault And Trauma, Brandy R. Preston

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There has been a plethora of research studies conducted on the staggering statistics surrounding military sexual trauma (MST) and how the armed forces have systematically failed to provide appropriate protections for women who experience military sexual assault (MSA). However, firsthand experiences from active-duty women who experienced MSA and the possible secondary trauma they experienced have very little documentation besides that from a quantitative research point of view. Studies surrounding survivors’ personal experiences are even more limited. Within this body of research, a phenomenological approach is used to describe the contextual and perceptual experiences surrounding active-duty women who are survivors of …

Wounding Words: A Phenomenological Study Of How Individuals Experience Receiving Spiritual Bypass, Peridot Reed-Gilbert Dec 2023

Wounding Words: A Phenomenological Study Of How Individuals Experience Receiving Spiritual Bypass, Peridot Reed-Gilbert

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Currently spiritual bypass refers to a person's attempt to evade or sidestep significant events in his or her life by focusing solely on the spiritual dimension “bypassing” important psychological tasks necessary for healing (Cashwell & Young, 2004; Clarke et al., 2013). Several studies have been conducted proving that spiritual bypass is a phenomenon that individuals implement on themselves. However, the purpose of this study was to address the gap in the existing research literature by examining the lived experiences of those who have experienced receiving spiritual bypass from another person. Through semi-structured interviews, fourteen participants who self-identified as having experienced …

Relationships Between Shame, Cognitive Distortions And Positive Relationships With Others Among Young Adults, And Changes In Shame Resulting From An Intervention Focusing On Cognitive Distortions, John E. Shanks

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Experiences of shame are strongly correlated with diminished social relations in individuals of all ages. Difficult and traumatic early childhood situations and experiences such as partner abuse, sexual violence in situations with differences in status commonly lead to shame. Difficult family situations and traumatic situations also frequently result in cognitive distortions, flawed thinking which often continues through adulthood. This study evaluated the experiences of shame, satisfaction of social relations, and cognitive distortions of young adults ages 18-25 years of age. Participants included 88 young adults recruited from social media sites and email contacts. Self-report measures were used to evaluate the …

The present study sought to gather qualitative insights related to teacher understanding of forgiveness, teacher practice of forgiveness within their jobs, and teacher opinions on forgiveness education. A total of six semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with groups of two to four public school teachers. Results indicated that there is variety in understanding amongst teachers of what …

Examining The Predictive Weight Of Perceived Organizational Support And Job Embeddedness On Turnover Intention, Tyler J. Swansboro

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Generation Z personnel are entering the workplace in monumental numbers. As this understudied population enters the work domain, the business environment will continuously struggle to adapt to their new perceptions, motifs, and thought processes. When these new workers enter the workforce, many will inevitably enter the leisure and hospitality industry. This specific industry has the highest turnover rate in America (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2022). To further the understanding of retention, this study was structured to explore the predictive weight of perceived organizational support (POS) and job embeddedness (JE) on turnover intention, to assess which construct was the stronger …

Exploring The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Financial Egocentrism, And Fraud Susceptibility In Cyber-Enabled Fraud Schemes Involving Crypto Assets, James Mcdowell Dec 2023

Exploring The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Financial Egocentrism, And Fraud Susceptibility In Cyber-Enabled Fraud Schemes Involving Crypto Assets, James Mcdowell

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The propensity to exploit others for one’s own benefit is continuously exhibited by bad actors. Unfortunately, this sentiment holds true in emerging asset classes, such as crypto assets. As a result, it is surprising that current research on fraud susceptibility is approached in a binary way. Researchers examine either what makes an individual predisposed to victimization by bad actors or what factors influence one’s propensity to perpetrate fraudulent schemes. This study bridged this substantial gap in current research by investigating if specific psychological factors influence when, or if, an individual shifts between these two outcomes. The psychological factors incorporated into …

A Phenomenological Approach To Explore The Lived Experiences Of Virtual Employees' Socialization And Organizational Identification, Zachary D. Kostusyk

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Virtual work has been increasing throughout the years with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating that growth. However, the effects of virtual work remain, leaving much to be known about what experiences virtual employees have with their organization that lead to diverse outcomes. This qualitative phenomenological study explored how virtual employees experienced organizational socialization and organizational identification early in their organizational tenure. The theoretical framework for this study used Blau’s (1964) social exchange theory (SET) and Tajfel and Turner’s (1979) Social identity theory (SIT). Data from 13 participants’ semi-structured interviews were analyzed by the researcher using Heidegger’s (1889–1976) interpretive hermeneutic spiral along …

Data were collected through virtual interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The study reveals a positive correlation between DEI initiatives and elevated …

Centrality Of Religiosity As A Predictor Of Motivational Needs For The Gen Z Cohort, Ryan A. Willcockson Oct 2023

Centrality Of Religiosity As A Predictor Of Motivational Needs For The Gen Z Cohort, Ryan A. Willcockson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Past research has focused exhaustively on the motivational needs of older generational cohorts, while Gen Z receives minimal attention. Simultaneously, no research exists examining Gen Z’s centrality of religiosity or how their religiousness might affect motivational needs. This focus by research is crucial because the global number of Gen Z individuals now eclipses the current population of Baby Boomers and Gen X (Ajzen, 2020). This gap in motivational and religious centrality research is arguably due to many studies downplaying Gen Z’s motivational needs with claims that their motivations, centrality of religiosity, and behavioral choices are like that of Gen X …

The Healing Power Of Creative Storytelling: Utilizing Fiction As A Means Of Therapy In The Writer/Reader Relationship, Alicia Rose Klepper

Masters Theses

What if we wrote the challenging portions of our lives as comedies or the boring parts as grand adventures? What if we recast painful experiences into creative stories that allow us to live in proximity to our circumstances and not be overwhelmed? Storytelling is how we bridge our lives with creativity as a way to heal from the past, process the present, and hope for the future. This thesis explores how the tradition of creative storytelling has evolved to enable writers and readers to uncover and connect elements of life that would otherwise be too painful to process. By bridging …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This phenomenological study aims to understand the shared experience of employees who work directly with rescued sex-trafficked women at anti-trafficking agencies in the United States. Chapter One details the theoretical contexts, including Maslow’s (1954) hierarchy of needs, Maslach’s (1982) cost of caring: burnout, McCann and Pearlman’s (1990) construct of vicarious traumatization, Rotter’s (1954) social learning theory as it relates to the impact of working with severely traumatized people. The problem statement is explained as the effectiveness of anti-sex trafficking agencies being influenced by the staff who provide care to rescued sex trafficked women, and there is currently little to no …

Exploring Techniques Used To Make Doctor-Recommended Changes In Diet And Exercise For Patients With Cardiac Disease, Amy Rechner

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Motivation plays an important role in treatment adherence, as patients should make necessary health behavior changes based on their physician’s recommendations. Self-efficacy and resilience can help/hinder the patient from implementing and maintaining these changes. Previous studies concluded that individuals cannot rely on medication alone and must implement healthy lifestyle changes. However, these changes may be difficult, as the individuals may face physical or emotional barriers. Therefore, it is important to analyze the factors that motivate an individual to overcome these challenges and follow the recommended treatment plan. This qualitative study examined four participants age x-y through in-depth interviews. Three participants, …

The Impact Of The Fall On Behavior, Intellect, And Emotion, Robert Monte Nelson Sep 2023

The Impact Of The Fall On Behavior, Intellect, And Emotion, Robert Monte Nelson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this research is to explore theological doctrines surrounding the Fall and to examine the impact of the Fall on human behavior, intellect, and emotion. This research maintains that the Fall of Adam led to the corruption of the volition, intellect, and emotions of Adam and Eve, who were created in the image of a perfect and holy God, without sin, and argues that humanity’s fallen condition impacts human emotions; however, they are distinct from divine emotions and are not an aspect of the imago Dei. Therefore, this dissertation will explore the meaning of the imago Dei, the …

Mindfulness To Reduce Math Anxiety And Improve Math Performance, Hannah E. Murch Sep 2023

Mindfulness To Reduce Math Anxiety And Improve Math Performance, Hannah E. Murch

Masters Theses

Math anxiety, the negative emotional response to math, is a common educational issue observed globally and across many grade levels. Additionally, it negatively impacts math performance and constrains long-term math achievement. Anxious ruminations strain mental resources and encourage avoidance behaviors such as procrastination. The prevalence and detrimental influence of math anxiety necessitate that educators mitigate math anxiety’s negative impact in the classroom. Previous research suggests interventions emphasizing mindfulness, which is the intentional awareness of the present moment, can combat the ruminations of math anxiety. When complemented with interventions on growth mindset, which is the belief that intelligence can grow and …

The Reported Experience And Stigma Of Mental Health Among African American Clergy, Valentina Stubbs

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The utilization of mental health treatment in the Black community has been diminished in comparison to other ethnic groups (Avent, Cashwell, & Brown-Jeffy, 2015). Members of the Black Church may have been socialized to seek help from their spiritual leader as opposed to mental health professionals. A transcendental phenomenological qualitative study (Moustakas, 1994) was used to gain an understanding of how twelve (5 male and 7 female) Black clergy experience mental health and the stigma relating to mental health. The participants completed a survey and a semi-structured interview with the researcher and described their experience with mental health issues personally …
