Review Of The Book Reflections On Multiliterate Lives, Elizabeth C. Scheyder

Many authors write books and papers about deficits in second language teaching and competence, shining a spotlight on what teachers are doing “wrong” or what students are lacking. In this volume, Diane Belcher and Ulla Connor set out to provide a model that bypasses these negative perspectives and showcases success stories in second (or nth) language learning. The result is a compilation of auto-ethnographies from 18 adults with successful professional careers who were asked to provide their “L1/L2 literacy autobiograph(ies)” (p. 209).
Brownfields Neighborhood Revitalization, Bhavna Shamasunder
Brownfields Neighborhood Revitalization, Bhavna Shamasunder
Bhavna Shamasunder
Brownfields issues are significant points of advocacy and activism for creating substantial social change in low-income communitites. The authors identify key environmental justice issues present in the brownfields debate; provide an overview of existing laws, regulations, and policies that are currently in place to address brownfields contamination and revitalization; discuss the effectiveness of these current strategies; discuss emerging and potential innovative strategies for brownfields revitalization, and provide a set of "best practices" and resources that are being developed nationally to address brownfields in low-income communities and communities of color.

Delivering On The 256 Qam Promise, Ron D. Katznelson

The accumulation of degradation factors in the downstream channels is reviewed with focus on headend/hub transmission-related noise aggregation due to a plurality of downstream Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) transmitters and upconverters. Substantial increase in the number of QAM transmitters based on frequency agile upconverters is expected. Unlike fixed channel upconverters, these do not have narrow band filters at their output, consequently imparting appreciable levels of broadband noise on the network when several such units are combined. Based on these factors and other noise contributions, it is shown that additional impairments due to fluctuations associated with composite distortion terms on the …

The Return Of The Long-Run Phillips Curve, Liam Graham, Dennis Snower
The Return Of The Long-Run Phillips Curve, Liam Graham, Dennis Snower
Dennis Snower
This paper shows that the interaction between money growth and staggered nominal contracts gives rise to a long-run inflation-unemployment tradeoff.
An Anatomy Of The Phillips Curve, Marika Karanassou, Hector Sala, Dennis Snower
An Anatomy Of The Phillips Curve, Marika Karanassou, Hector Sala, Dennis Snower
Dennis Snower
The paper examines how the long-run inflation-unemployment tradeoff depends on the degree to which wage-price decisions are backward- versus forward-looking. When economic agents, facing time-contingent, staggered nominal contracts, have a positive rate of time preference, the current wage and price levels depend more heavily on past variables (e.g. past wages and prices) than on future variables. Consequently, the long-run Phillips curve becomes downward-sloping and, indeed, quit flat for plausible parameter values. This paper provides an intuitive account of how this long-run Phillips curve arises.

Hedonic Wage Equations For Higher Education Faculty, Philip E. Graves, James R. Marchand, Robert L. Sexton
PHILIP E GRAVES
This paper discusses the use of hedonic techniques to theoretically and empirically understand the wages of higher education faculty. The paper first presents theoretical models of department and faculty choice. These models represent a synthesis of prior work in the hedonic area. The models imply a hedonic wage equation for faculty with wages dependent on productivity, departmental amenities and locational amenities. The theoretical discussion is followed by exploratory and illustrative empirical work. In summary, the reported regressions show that increased teaching loads and secretaries per faculty member tend to decrease salaries while increasing referred journal articles, hotter than average summers, …
Additionality Of Debt Relief And Debt Forgiveness, And Implications For Future Volumes Of Official Assistance, Léonce Ndikumana
Additionality Of Debt Relief And Debt Forgiveness, And Implications For Future Volumes Of Official Assistance, Léonce Ndikumana
Léonce Ndikumana
This paper examines the impact of debt forgiveness and debt relief on official development assistance. From the recipient side, the econometric analysis suggests that countries that received debt relief also received more aid compared to those that did not qualify for debt relief. From the donor side, while the data indicate a decline in aid disbursement since the early 1990s, there is no econometric evidence for any direct causal relationship between the decline in aid and debt relief/forgiveness. Nonetheless, the decline in aid raises serious concerns given that developing countries’ need in external resources cannot be met by debt relief …

In 2002 a study was conducted of community college collections in Florida as a follow-up and an additional interval to a similar study conducted in 1998. The analysis in 2002 compared the profile of the LINCC database, three peer groups of community colleges by enrollment size, and each of the twenty-eight community colleges with the 1998 study results. Among the significant findings are: The median age of LINCC collective holdings improved between 1998 and 2002, declining from 24 years to 22 years. The “year reached 50%” for the LINCC database in 2002 was 1980, meaning that half of the monographs …

We tested the hypothesis that genes encoded on the sex chromosomes play a direct role in sexual differentiation of brain and behavior. We used mice in which the testis-determining gene (Sry) was moved from the Y chromosome to an autosome (by deletion ofSry from the Y and subsequent insertion of anSry transgene onto an autosome), so that the determination of testis development occurred independently of the complement of X or Y chromosomes. We compared XX and XY mice with ovaries (females) and XX and XY mice with testes (males). These comparisons allowed us to assess the effect of sex chromosome …

This article addresses the constitutionality and wisdom of Oregon's urban growth boundary (UGB) program. The article concludes that the program is constitutional under current precedent, and that (contrary to claims made by UGB critics) there is little evidence that the UGB has caused Oregon's runup in housing prices. On the other hand, UGB supporters may have exaggerated the UGB's positive environmental results.

The value of statistical life (VSL) can be inferred through real-world wage-fatality risk trade-offs made across different occupations. paper shows that the VSL based on the wage risk trade-off tends be biased upward if it does not account for the diversity of unobservable skill to cope privately with job risk. This upward arises because the highest required wage differential among the workers is divided by their average risk across the population.

Tick data on the S&P 500 futures contract and newswire searches are used to match events to large one- to five-minute stock price changes. 69 events that led to large stock price changes are identified between 1982 and 1999, 53 of which are directly or indirectly related to monetary policy. Many large stock price changes have no events associated with them.

Viscoelastic Properties And Changes In Pasting Characteristics Of Trifoliate Yam (Dioscorea Dumetorum) Starch After Harvest, Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Samuel Sefa-Dedeh
Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa
Studies were conducted on the viscoelastic properties, as well as the changes in pasting characteristics, of trifoliate yam, Dioscorea dumetorum, starch during post-harvest hardening of the tubers. A 3x4 factorial experiment with blanching treatment time (0, 15 and 30 s) and storage time (0, 12, 24 and 36 h) as the respective variables was performed. The samples were evaluated for pasting temperature, viscosity at 95 _C, viscosity at 95 _C-Hold, viscosity at 50 _C and viscosity at 50 _C-Hold, as well as their changes during storage of the tubers, to determine the starch behaviour of the D. dumetorum tubers during …
