The library profession has a vested interest in the retention and information literacy of graduate and professional students. Recent research highlights the need for the overall study of graduate student use of the library and of those services and resources geared toward that population. A University of Iowa Libraries' user needs assessment survey of a random sample of graduate and professional students revealed that although graduate and professional students come to the library to do research or to use other library resources, fewer come to study or borrow books. Graduate and professional students recognize the need for more assistance in …

In 2002 a study was conducted of community college collections in Florida as a follow-up and an additional interval to a similar study conducted in 1998. The analysis in 2002 compared the profile of the LINCC database, three peer groups of community colleges by enrollment size, and each of the twenty-eight community colleges with the 1998 study results. Among the significant findings are: The median age of LINCC collective holdings improved between 1998 and 2002, declining from 24 years to 22 years. The “year reached 50%” for the LINCC database in 2002 was 1980, meaning that half of the monographs …

Newspaper Management In Nigerian University Libraries: A Case Of Federal University Of Technology Owerri(Futo) Library, Chinwe Veronica Anunobi Dr, Carol N. Okorafor
Chinwe Veronica Anunobi Dr
The work discusses the management of newspapers in Nigerian university libraries with reference to the Library of the Federal University of Technology Owerri. It notes that newspapers are acquired by subscription through a well-established vendor or directly from the publishers. Political, economic, social and intellectual problems hinder the continuous subscription of newspapers. The processing of newspaper involves stamping and recording using standard forms and registers or loose sheets. Such processing requires adequate work surface. Newspapers are made available for use on display racks or newspaper folders while articles are located using in-housed developed indexes. The preservation of newspapers poses some …

'...The Times They Are A-Changin': Political Protests—Iowa State University—May 1970, A Photographic Essay And Oral History, Gerry Mckiernan, Michele Christian
Michele Christian
In early May 1970, thousands of Iowa State University students gathered to protest the expanding war in Vietnam and Southeast Asia and the killing of four unarmed students on the campus of Kent State University. This photographic essay seeks to document significant events of the first week in May 1970 on the ISU campus and in Ames, Iowa, utilizing photographs selected from the archives of the Iowa State University Library, Special Collections Department, excerpts of reports from the university newspaper, the Iowa State Daily, and summaries from a chronological account of these and other events presented in a masters thesis …

"Commercial Websites And The Use Of Classification Schemes: The Case Of Amazon.Com." In Lopez-Huertas, Maria J. Challenges In Knowledge Representation And Organization For The 21st Century: Integration Of Knowledge Across Boundaries., Barbara H. Kwasnik
Barbara H. Kwasnik
The structure and use of the classification for books on the Amazon.com website are described and analyzed. The contents of this large website are changing constantly and the access mechanisms have the main purpose of enabling searchers to find books for purchase. This includes finding books the searcher knows about at the start of the research, as well as those that might present themselves in the course of searching and that are related in some way. Underlying the many access paths to books is a classification scheme comprising a rich network of terms in an enumerative and multihierarchical structure.
Electronic Or Print: Are Scholarly Journals Still Important?, Carol Tenopir
Electronic Or Print: Are Scholarly Journals Still Important?, Carol Tenopir
Carol Tenopir
The author's work in collaboration with Donald King has encompassed many studies over a 25-year period that have provided a wealth of data on the usage of scholarly journal articles by scientists. She uses the data to arrive at some major conclusions about scientists' behaviour: they read a lot, the material from journals is essential to them, they use different ways to get hold of the material, they use electronic sources when convenient, and journals in many fields divide into core and peripheral titles - core titles obtained on subscription and peripheral material as separates.

In 2001, WorldCat, the primary international bibliographic utility, contained 45 million records with over 750 million library location listings. These records span over 4,000 years of recorded knowledge in 377 languages.1 Under the auspices of an OCLC/ALISE research grant, a bibliometric study was conducted of WorldCat. A 10% systematic random sample of the database was analyzed utilizing the OCLC iCAS product to profile the monographic bibliographic records in WorldCat by type of library, subject, language, and publication date parameters. The profile details the Ainformation commons@ of global publication made accessible through the OCLC international network.
There were 3,378,272 usable records …
Teaching At The Desk: Toward A Reference Pedagogy, James Elmborg
Teaching At The Desk: Toward A Reference Pedagogy, James Elmborg
James K. Elmborg
This article proposes that we use constructivist learning theory—primarily composition theory—to develop a pedagogy for the reference desk. This approach implies that reference is a form of teaching, and that to maximize their educational effectiveness, academic librarians need to approach reference transactions as academic conferences where teaching and learning take place.
Hope From Hopelessness: Finding Contemporary Southern Literature Through Anne Tyler’S Use Of The Sound And The Fury, Amy M. Elliott
Hope From Hopelessness: Finding Contemporary Southern Literature Through Anne Tyler’S Use Of The Sound And The Fury, Amy M. Elliott
Amy M. Elliott
Critical debate focuses on the trend of Southern writers and the classification of their work within the tradition of Southern literature. One side of the argument supports contemporary writers as part of the Southern literary tradition. That is, it proposes that contemporary Southern writers continue to write Southern literature not by writing with the same style and magnitude as Faulkner and Warren, but by basing their writing on this tradition and modernizing it. An excellent example lies in Anne Tyler’s use of William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury as a foundation for her Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. Through …

Using Biography In The Elementary Classroom, Dorothy Bowen

When biography first gained recognition as a genre for adults, it was not considered an appropriate form of literature for children. As it began to gain a place in children's literature, as was true of most books written for children at the time, biography was used as a tool for teaching children to emulate the hero.

Nailing Ectoplasm To The Wall: Serials Control & E-Journals, Martha Gunnarson
Martha Gunnarson
Serials control has been described as being like "nailing jello to the wall." Electronic journals add (or is it take away?) a whole new dimension to the librarian's life.
In this presentation, I will take a look at some of the issues involved in setting up (and maintaining) access to e-journals.
Will the new paperless journals make your life easier?

How much will it cost?
How consortial agreements can help keep costs in line

The Florida Community College Statewide Collection Assessment Project: Outcomes And Impact, Anna H. Perrault, Tina Adams, Jeannie Dixon, Rhonda Smith
Anna H. Perrault
A collection assessment project was conducted in 1998 of the twenty-eight community college library/Library Resource Center (LRC) collections in Florida.1 The evaluative materials provided to each of the institutions produced a number of outcomes. To assess the project’s impact, a survey was conducted in fall 2000. The impact study found that, in the opinion of library administrators, the Florida Community College Collection Assessment study had influenced the appropriation of additional funds, informed librarians’ collection development decisions, and affected the weeding of collections through the presentation of institution-specific collection assessment reports that were provided for each library. The major finding of …
