The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e, ef'p) reaction has been studied at SLAC with 2H, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q2 = 1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A, Q2), a measure of the average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. Within the measurement uncertainty, no increase is seen for any of the nuclei studied.

In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation.

Energy spectra of both protons and deuterons emitted following the capture of negative muons by 3He nuclei have been measured for energies above 15 MeV. A limited number of proton-neutron pairs emitted in coincidence were also observed. A simple plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA) model calculation yields fair agreement with the measured proton energy spectra, but underpredicts the measured rate of deuteron production above our energy threshold by a large factor. A more sophisticated PWIA calculation for the two-body breakup channel, based on a realistic three-body wave function for the initial state, is closer to the deuteron data at …

The spin structure function of the neutron g1n has been determined over the range 0.03 < x < 0.6 at an average Q2 of 2 (GeV/c)2 by measuring the asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized 3He target at energies between 19 and 26 GeV. The integral of the neutron spin structure function is found to be f-10 gn1(x)dx = -0.022 ± 0.011. Earlier reported proton results together with the Bjorken sum rule predict f-10 gn1(x)dx = -0.059 ± 0.019.

Tensor and vector analyzing powers for the ²H (d,γ) ⁴He reaction have been obtained as a function of angle at Ed(lab) = 20, 30, and 50 MeV. Differential cross sections were extracted at 30 and 50 MeV. Data for Ayy(θ) and Ay(θ) were obtained at all three energies, while T20(θ) was also measured at Ed(lab) = 50 MeV. A direct capture calculation was performed and compared to the data. This calculation assumes point deuterons and that the reaction proceeds primarily via E2 radiation in this energy region. A value of …

Spectra of energetic protons and deuterons emitted following negative muon capture from rest in 3He have been measured for the first time. Significant capture strength is observed at high energy transfers (mμ- Ev >60 MeV) for the two-body and three-body breakup channels, indicative of the importance of nucleon-nucleon correlations and meson exchange currents in the capture process. A simple plane wave impulse approximation calculation reproduces the proton spectrum reasonably well, but underpredicts the deuteron rate at the highest energies by a large factor.

Measurements of the tensor and vector analyzing powers, Ayy(130°) and Ay(130°), have been obtained for the 2H(d,γ )4He reaction for energies ranging from Ed(lab) = 0.3 MeV to Ed(lab) = 50 MeV. The Ayy(130°) data are sensitive to the D-state present in the ground state of 4He and are observed to have their maximum value near Ed = 30 MeV. The vector analyzing power data show a maximum near Ed = 3 MeV. The data are compared to the results of a microscopic …

Excitation Of Hydrogen Atoms By Fast Protons, Edward Ellis Fitchard

Physics Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis a theoretical study is made of excitation of hydrogenic atom by charged particles such as protons or electrons. The approximation to the cross section for an inelastic scattering process is obtained under the following radically simplifying assumptions. The projectile is represented in its initial and final state by plane waves. All distortions are neglected whether they originate in an inelastic process or an elastic deflections of the charged particle by the nucleus. The perturbation of the atomic orbits between which the projectile induces transitions is neglected. Nonrelativistic hydrogenic wave functions are used for the electronic states. In …
