Daniel J. Belliveau

G207 is a multimutated, conditionally replicating herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) that is currently in clinical trial for patients with malignant glioma. G207 exhibits an efficient oncolytic activity in tumor cells, yet minimal toxicity in normal tissue when injected into the brains of HSV-susceptible mice or nonhuman primates. In this study, we evaluated the shedding and biodistribution of clinical-grade G207 after intracerebral inoculation (3 × 107 pfu) in four New World owl monkeys (Aotus nancymae). Using PCR analyses and viral cultures, neither infectious virus nor viral DNA was detected from tear, saliva, or vaginal secretion samples at any time …

End-Of-Life Decision-Making: Practical And Ethical Issues For Health Professionals, Colleen Cartwright Dec 1999

End-Of-Life Decision-Making: Practical And Ethical Issues For Health Professionals, Colleen Cartwright

Professor Colleen M Cartwright

Life-extending changes in medical technology and an ageing population pose practical and ethical problems relating to end-of-life decision making. Health professionals need to understand the fears and concerns of their patients, their preferred place to die and to respect patient autonomy. Such wishes may be expressed verbally by a competent patient or through an advance directive (living will) or proxy by an incompetent patient. There is an urgent need for increased and improved training of health professionals in pain management and palliative care, and for the development of practical, ethical policies and guidelines with respect to withdrawing/withholding life-sustaining treatment. Review of "Neurosteroids: A New Regulatory Function in the Nervous System" (edited by Etiene-Emile Baulieu, Paul Robel and Michael Schumacher), Humana Press, 1999. ISBN 0896 03545X The first recognized example of the profound influence of steroid hormones on the nervous system was perhaps the observation in prehistoric times that animal behaviour changes dramatically during oestrus (the period of female sexual receptivity). In recent years, much specific evidence has accumulated confirming that steroids affect the structure and function of the nervous system through effects on neurogenesis, cell death, cell migration, synapse formation and neuronal excitability.

Alcohol Consumption And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease By Diabetes Status, Paulo A. Lotufo Dec 1999

Alcohol Consumption And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease By Diabetes Status, Paulo A. Lotufo

Paulo A Lotufo

Background—An inverse association between moderate alcohol consumption and coronary heart disease (CHD) has been observed in several epidemiological studies. To assess whether a similar association exists among diabetics, we examined the relation between light to moderate alcohol consumption and CHD in men with and without diabetes mellitus in a prospective cohort study. Methods and Results—A total of 87 938 US physicians (2790 with diagnosed diabetes mellitus) who were invited to participate in the Physicians’ Health Study and were free of myocardial infarction, stroke, cancer, or liver disease at baseline were followed for an average of 5.5 years for death with …

Dengue And Aedes Aegypti: A Public Health Problem Along The United States-Mexico Border (Lecture Number 1 - A Series Of Dengue Lectures), Frank Cortez Flores Dec 1999

Dengue And Aedes Aegypti: A Public Health Problem Along The United States-Mexico Border (Lecture Number 1 - A Series Of Dengue Lectures), Frank Cortez Flores

Frank Cortez Flores

My primary public health interest is the reemerging arboviral infections (e.g., dengue) that are increasing in incidence, expanding into new geographic areas, affecting new populations, and are threatening to increase in the near future, especially following a natural disaster (e.g., hurricanes). The goal of the dengue lecture series is to promote the recognition of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever and improve the understanding of factors involved in prevention, surveillance and control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the principal mosquito vector of dengue virus. The purpose of these lectures is to accelerate learning and development of an effective dengue prevention and …

Short And Long-Term Effects Of Medication And Psychotherapy In The Brief Treatment Of Depression: Further Analyses Of Data From The Nimh Tdcrp, Sidney J. Blatt, David C. Zuroff, Colin M. Bondi, Charles A. Sanislow Dec 1999

Short And Long-Term Effects Of Medication And Psychotherapy In The Brief Treatment Of Depression: Further Analyses Of Data From The Nimh Tdcrp, Sidney J. Blatt, David C. Zuroff, Colin M. Bondi, Charles A. Sanislow

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Prior analyses of data from the NIMH sponsored Treatment for Depression Collaborative Research Program (TDCRP; e.g., I. Elkin, 1994) indicated greater reduction of symptoms at midtreatment (8th wk) with Imipramine (IMI-CM) than with Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal therapy (IPT), but no significant differences in symptom reduction among these 3 active treatments at termination. Current analyses of previously unanalyzed data from ratings by therapists, clinical evaluators, and 162 patients (mean age 35 yrs) at termination and at 18-mo follow-up also indicated no significant differences among these treatments in symptom reduction or ratings of current clinical condition. But significant treatment differences …

Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions To Single And Simultaneous Tone Pairs, Kim S. Schairer, C. Clukey, H. J. Gould

Kim S. Schairer

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) evoked by single tone pairs and three simultaneous tone pairs were recorded in 60 normal-hearing adult ears. The purpose was to replicate a previous study using the commercially available probe assembly of the Grason Stadler GSI 60 and including ear of presentation in the statistical analysis along with frequency and condition. DPOAE levels were comparable between ears and conditions, although differences among frequencies were found. Noise levels were comparable between ears and tended to increase with increases in frequency for both conditions. The latter trend was not noted with the previous study and may be …

The Feasibility Of Bovine Erythrocytes For The Purpose Of Cross-Species Transfusion To Human Recipients, James E. Johnstone Dec 1999

The Feasibility Of Bovine Erythrocytes For The Purpose Of Cross-Species Transfusion To Human Recipients, James E. Johnstone

Vivian C. McAlister

Use of animal blood could overcome concerns of supply and disease transmission with human blood donation if immunological, microbiological and ethical barriers are overcome. Here we investigated the feasibility of using bovine red blood cells (RBC) because of possibly diminished cross-species immune reactivity and the relative ease of venous access in the cow. A group of 12 tagged Holstein cows were randomly selected from the NSAC herd for evaluation. Tests included hemagglutination, complement mediated lysis, osmotic fragility, conventional human crossmatch, an RBC absorbtion assay using ELISA, bovine blood type characterization, and human IgM and IgG (including subtypes) antibody binding. Each …

The Critical Care Research Network: A Partnership In Community Based Research And Research Transfer, Sean P. Keenan, Jennifer D. Kossuth Phd, William J. Sibbald, Claudio M. Martin, Jeannette Eberhard

Jennifer D. Irwin

The objectives of this study were to present a short history of the Critical Care Research Network (CCR-Net), describe its approach to health ser- vices research and to summarize completed and current research projects. In doing this, we explored the question is this research network accom- plishing its goals? We reviewed the medical literature to identify studies on similar types of Networks and also the evidence supporting the metho- dology used by CCR-Net to conduct research using MEDLINE, HEALTHSTAR, CINAHL and the keywords network and health care or healthcare, benchmarking and health care or healthcare, and research transfer or research …
