Effects Of Bac On The Innervation Of Stomach, Berri̇n Gençer Tarakçi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Serosal application of BAC (benzalkonium chloride) to the pyloric antrum of the rat led to a complete loss of the intrinsic innervation of the treated region and also extensive loss of extrinsic sensory projections in the treated and untreated regions of the stomach. However, no changes were seen in the numbers of primary afferents projecting to the stomach, or expression of neuropeptides or neuronal proteins in the neurons. This finding is in marked contrast to the changes reported in sensory cell bodies after sectioning of the sciatic nerve, and suggested that visceral and somatic afferents may respond differently to axonal …

Calcium And Phosphate Excretion In Preeclampsia, Pervi̇n Vural, Cemi̇l Akgül, Mukaddes Canbaz Jan 2000

Calcium And Phosphate Excretion In Preeclampsia, Pervi̇n Vural, Cemi̇l Akgül, Mukaddes Canbaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In preeclampsia, alterations in renal function, electrolyte and water metabolism are common findings. Recent studies have suggested that preeclampsia is associated with hypocalciuria. A total of 59 women were included in the present study, 15 of whom were nonpregnant (NP) healthy women, 20 normotensive pregnant women (NTP), and 24 pregnant women with severe preeclampsia (PEP). We compared the three groups in terms of calcium and phosphate excretion, and some parameters of renal function such as serum urea, creatinine and creatinine clearance. Urinary calcium and phosphate levels in the PEP group were significantly lower than in the NP group (p< 0.001 and p< 0.01, respectively) and NTP group (p< 0.001 and p< 0.01, respectively). The serum urea levels were higher in the PEP group than in the NP and NTP (p< 0.001) groups. The same pattern of increase in the PEP group was valid for serum creatinine concentrations as compared with the NP (p< 0.01) and NTP (p< 0.001) levels. The glomerular filtration rate measured by creatinine clearance was lower in preeclamptic women than in normotensive pregnant women (p< 0.01). Patients with preeclampsia had significantly lower (p< 0.001) excretion of calcium than the NP and NTP groups (p< 0.001). Likewise, the phosphate levels were lower in women with preeclampsia than in the NP and NTP groups (p< 0.01). There was no correlation between parameters of renal function and calcium or phosphate excretion. Hypocalciuria and hypophosphateuria were found to be important features of severe preeclampsia and probably indirectly are related to the altered renal function seen in toxemia of pregnancy.

Establishment Of A Nonradioactive Molecular Diagnosis Of Fragile-X Syndrome, Zehra Oya Uyguner, Bernd Wollnik, Hülya Kayseri̇li̇, Turgut Tükel, Seher Başaran, Memnune Yüksel Apak

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Fragile-X syndrome is a hereditary dynamic mutation disorder, predominantly caused by a large expansion of CGG trinucleotide repeats in the FMR 1 gene leading to methylation and down regulation of transcription of the gene. For the molecular diagnosis of the disease, the repeat locus in FMR 1 gene is primarily detected by Southern blotting with radioactively labeled probes. Unusually GC rich composition of the expanded region caused technical difficulties during PCR based testing and therefore is not performed by most diagnostic laboratories. We established a Southern blot method and a novel PCR protocol which enables the amplification of normal, premutated …
