The Urological Management Of Voiding Dysfunction In Chronic Spinal Cord Injury, Hann-Chorng Kuo Dec 2000

The Urological Management Of Voiding Dysfunction In Chronic Spinal Cord Injury, Hann-Chorng Kuo

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) results in various dysfunctions of the urinary bladder and urethra. These neurological deteriorations after SCI cause varying urological symptoms and complications. Early detection of high risk SCI patients is important. Regular determination of intravesical pressure, residual urine and leak point pressure can provide information to avoid upper tract deterioration. Agg-ressive urological management can reduce the mortality rate from urinary tract infection (UTI) and a better quality of life can thus ensue. In the management of urological sequalae of SCI, preservation of renal function, freedom from UTI, freedom from indwelling catheter, and continence should be the …

Coma Reversal And Functional Recovery After Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy And Rehabilitation In The Subacute Phase Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: A Casereport And Literature Review, Chun-Hui Wang, Fook-Cheung Wan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) effectively decreases the morbidity and mortality of carbon monoxide poisoning . Immediate HBO treatment is indicated as it yields a more rapid and greater neuropsychological recovery. HBO significantly decreases the half life of carboxy hemoglobin (COHb) and increases the tissue clearance of residual carbon monoxide, thus decreasing the neuropsychological deficit. HBO enhances the outcome even in the subacute phase of CO poisoning as in this case. A thirteen year old girl was admitted to our hospital in a deep coma after severe CO poisoning from gas leakage and was referred for HBO treatment one month after carbon …

Intractable Hiccups Following Ischemic Stroke Of Brain Stem : A Casereport, Ya-Wei Cheng, Lu Lu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hiccups are a common phenomenon though their mechanism and physiological meaning are still controversial. No special treatment is necessary for most patients with hiccup. However, the hiccup might last for more than one month in rare cases, defined as an intractable hiccup, as one of the clini-cal manifestations of respiratory, gastrointestinal or neurological diseases.A case with an ischemic brain stem stroke is investigated herein. The intractable hiccup disturbed the patient’s appetite, impaired his nutritional and dehydration status, and even delayed rehabilitation. Prochlorperazine maleate (Novamin) was administered and provided with much significant relief, which is the first successful experience in the …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Periprosthetic humeral fractures constituted only 2 % of all the complications during or after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty or total shoulder arthroplasty. Most of the fractures occurred intraoperatively. Postoperative fractures were caused by falls or traffic accidents. To our knowledge, they have never been caused by stretching exercises after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty. We present a 57-year-old female patient who had a periprosthetic humeral shaft spiral fracture caused by stretching exercises after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty because of proximal humeral fracture. The fracture was close reduced and fixed with a sugar-tong splint. Three months later, the fracture successfully healed with good alignment. Possible …

Histological And Ultrastructural Differences Between Normal And Softened Articular Cartilage, Jue-Long Wang, Jyh-Seng Wang, Huann Chang, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chang Hsu Mar 2000

Histological And Ultrastructural Differences Between Normal And Softened Articular Cartilage, Jue-Long Wang, Jyh-Seng Wang, Huann Chang, Rai-Chi Chan, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Articular cartilage is a highly compressive load-bearing tissue by virtue of the functional interplay between a 3-dimensional (3-D) structure of collagen fibrils and the entrapped water-swollen proteoglycan macromolecules. Any loss of interconnectivity in the collagen network that might reduce the constraints on the swelling tendency of the proteoglycan domain will lead to swelling and low matrix stiffness. The 3-D fibrillar architecture of the cartilage matrix strongly influences its stiffness and therefore its ability to maintain a sufficient hydrated thickness under load. One of the pathologies of osteoarthritis is softening and swelling of the articular cartilage. Such degenerative process is thought to …
