New Mesoamerican Species Of Cyperus (Cyperaceae), Gordon Tucker

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Four species of the genus Cyperus are described, illustrated, and compared to their nearest relatives. These are: C. matudae and C. breedlovei (Subgenus Protocyperus) from the Pacific slope of Chiapas, Mexico; and C. wilburii and C. svensonii (Subgenus Cyperus) from the lowlands of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and from the uplands of Chiapas, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, respectively.

Multiple Paternity In A Territorial Passerine: The Bobolink, Thomas A. Gavin, Eric K. Bollinger Jul 1985

Multiple Paternity In A Territorial Passerine: The Bobolink, Thomas A. Gavin, Eric K. Bollinger

Eric K. Bollinger

Electrophoretic and behavioral evidence corroborate the conclusion that Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) females occasionally copulate with more than one male, which results in the insemination of a single clutch of eggs by those males. In 2 of 12 families from which blood samples were obtained from the mother, the putative father, and the nestlings, at least 2 males were responsible for fertilization of the clutch. We believe this is only the second bird species in which multiple paternity has been documented conclusively in the wild. Our speculation that it may not be uncommon leads to a caution for evolutionary biologists who …

A Study Of Cladonia Cryptochlorophaea And Morphologically Similar Species In Illinois, Indiana, And Wisconsin, Scott S. Wilcer

Masters Theses

Collections of Cladonias with cup-shaped podetia were made in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin in order to determine the distribution of an atranorin-containing variant of Cladonia cryptochlorophaea, which was discovered in 1982 in Coles County, Illinois by Cheryl Cunningham. A second objective was a distributional study of the Cladonias having cup-shaped podetia in the same three state area.

A total of 591 specimens were collected from the three states. The collection areas for Illinois were: Jackson Hollow in Pope County, Giant City State Park and Touch of Nature Interpretive Center in Jackson and Williamson Counties, Starved Rock State Park in …

Multiple Captures Of Peromyscus Le Uco Pus: Social Behavior In A Small Rodent, James M. Novak Jan 1983

Multiple Captures Of Peromyscus Le Uco Pus: Social Behavior In A Small Rodent, James M. Novak

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The capture of more than one individual in a live trap can often provide information on the social behavior of small mammals, but the conclusions drawn from these data will depend on the type of live trap used. Davis (1955) and Getz (1972) used multiple capture traps and analyzed their data with respect to attraction and repulsion of individuals both within and between different age and sex classes. Petersen (1975), Feldhamer (1977), Blaustein and Rothstein (1978), Jenkins and Llewellyn (1981) and Spencer et al. (1982) gained information on the formation of associations during foraging and dispersal from multip~ captures made …

Isolation And Identification Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria From Bovine Lung Abscesses, Steven Daniel Jan 1980

Isolation And Identification Of Obligately Anaerobic Bacteria From Bovine Lung Abscesses, Steven Daniel

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

For many years, the role of anaerobic bacteria in human diseasewas considered important only in such clostridial diseases as gas gangrene, botulism and tetanus. In the last 10 years, however, the developmentof new methods to isolate and identify anaerobic bacteria has establishedthe pathogenic role of non-sporeforming anaerobic bacteria in awide variety of clinical infections in humans. Bacteroides fragilis isnow known to account for approximately one-fourth of all anaerobicbacteria isolated from human clinical specimens.

Distribution And Relative Abundance Of Small Mammals In The Illini Forest Plantation, Urbana, Illinois, James M. Novak Jan 1978

Distribution And Relative Abundance Of Small Mammals In The Illini Forest Plantation, Urbana, Illinois, James M. Novak

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The abundance and distribution of small mammals were analyzed for correlation with the vegetational characteris· tics of their habitat. Positive correlations were found for the number of mammals trapped per area trapped versus the total ground cover (r= .67, P< .05) and for the number of mammal species versus total ground cover (r= .73, P<.05). The habitat preferences of the three species trapped (short-tailed shrews B/,arina brevicauda. white-footed mice Peromyscus leucopuus, and meadow voles Microtus pennsylvanicus) showed a distinct distributional pattern for the species in relation to their habitats. The management of forest-tree plantations to achieve high densities during the seedling stage and the use of silvicultural practices that promote high shrub densities are suggested as inexpensive and natural control measures for injurious microtine rodents. Seedlings must be permitted to reach a sufficient height to remove the risk of the shrubs overtopping them.

Bulletin 200 - Trees And Shrubs Of The Campus And East Central Illinois, Ernest Stover Oct 1952

Bulletin 200 - Trees And Shrubs Of The Campus And East Central Illinois, Ernest Stover

Eastern Illinois University Bulletin

The keys to the trees, shrubs and vines have been revised

in an attempt to make them more usable for the beginning student.

The keys to several of the genera, pines, oaks, ashes, willows,

etc., have been rewritten and species added that were not

in the previous printings.

The key to the trees in winter has been added hoping that it

will be helpful to both teachers and students. The identification

of trees without their leaves during the winter is not only interesting

but useful.

The identification of plants is but one phase of their study.

Botany is the basic …
