Periodic Heat Flow In A Semi-Infinite Solid, Warren George Heidbrier Jan 1950

Periodic Heat Flow In A Semi-Infinite Solid, Warren George Heidbrier

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to determine by analytical means the temperature within a homogeneous semi-infinite solid, as a function of time, while the solid is receiving heat periodically by radiation on its one flat surface. Periodic heat flow means that heat flow is a continuous function of time and repeats itself at regular intervals. A semi-infinite solid has only one bounding plane and extends to infinity in all other directions...Much of this work deals with the soil temperatures of the earth both at the surface and at various depths. The surface of the earth is subjected to daily …

Torque Characteristics Of High Speed Steel Twist Drills, Tien Chi Lee Jan 1949

Torque Characteristics Of High Speed Steel Twist Drills, Tien Chi Lee

Masters Theses

"The drill is the most efficient tool used by machinists, for in no other tool is the cutting surface as large in proportion to the cross sectional area of the body or part that is its real support. Drills have shared evolutionary developments from carbon steels to high speed steels and from flat to twist drills. Many investigations have been made on the twist drills, but due to the majority of their work being based on the size of drills from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches or larger, there is a dearth of published data on the general problem of drills …

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Fluids Through Porous Media, Alexander Antoine Zwierzchowski Jan 1949

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Fluids Through Porous Media, Alexander Antoine Zwierzchowski

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems in rheology. The relaxation method was first introduced by R. V. Southwell who applied it to the problem of electrical conductivity. It was later used by M. W. Emmons to solve two-dimensional heat conduction problems. The steady-state flow of fluids through porous media can be difficult or impossible by the usual analytical methods even with rather simple boundary conditions. The relaxation method promises to provide an easier method of solution and to provide a means of solving …

The Effect Of The Convection Coefficient On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Gordon L. Scofield Jan 1949

The Effect Of The Convection Coefficient On The Temperature Amplitude In Periodic Heat Flow, Gordon L. Scofield

Masters Theses

"The problem to be investigated in this thesis is that of periodic heat flow in a semi-infinite solid. Periodic flow means that heat flow is a continuous function of time and repeats itself at regular intervals. A semi-infinite solid is one which is bounded by one and only one plane. This subject has received considerable attention in the field of soil temperatures, both at the surface of the earth and at various depths. The surface of the earth is subjected to temperature changes which are nearly periodic. These temperature changes take place both daily and annually. A knowledge of these …

Automatic Wheel Balancer For Automobile Wheel, Frederick Eugene Nevin Jan 1949

Automatic Wheel Balancer For Automobile Wheel, Frederick Eugene Nevin

Masters Theses

"Automobiles of today have been so constructed that greater speeds under safer conditions now exist. One of the improvements has been the low pressure tire. These tires carrying less pressure necessitates a casing of greater volume. This has created a tire of greater thickness in the axial direction but at the same time has decreased the diameter. Because of these innovations in present-day tires the author believes the wheel assembly (tire, tube, wheel, and brake drum) should be considered as a rotating cylinder not as a rotating disk. This being the case, the condition of dynamic unbalance is more critical. …

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis Jan 1949

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media. The relaxation method was first applied to two-dimensional problems by Christopherson and Southwell, who applied it to problems in stress analysis. It was later applied to steady-state heat conduction problems by H. W. Emmons and to steady-state flow of incompressible liquids by A. A. Zwierschowski. The solutions of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media is difficult for all but the simplest boundary conditions, and impractical for …

Water Injection In The Modern Automotive Spark Ignition Engine, Leonard Carl Nelson Jan 1949

Water Injection In The Modern Automotive Spark Ignition Engine, Leonard Carl Nelson

Masters Theses

"The injection of water in the spark ignition engine is not new. The effect of humidity in the air on the performance of the spark ignition engine probably initiated the early investigations. The water vapor in the inlet air decreases the speed of the flame front and necessitates spark advance to assure maximum power and maximum efficiency. Water particles in the air evaporate during the compression and combustion of the inducted charge and decrease the tendency of the engine to detonate. These effects are very evident when operating the spark ignition engine in a moist atmosphere. Water is not a …

Analytical Investigation Of Thin And Moderately Thick-Walled Tubing Under Peripheral And Biaxial Loading, Frank Joseph Cizek Jan 1949

Analytical Investigation Of Thin And Moderately Thick-Walled Tubing Under Peripheral And Biaxial Loading, Frank Joseph Cizek

Masters Theses

"The problem then, resolves itself into a study of the behavior of thin-walled and moderately thick-walled cylinders under the effects of an external fluid pressure acting alone, or the effects of an external fluid pressure acting simultaneously with an axial loading. In this thesis a theoretical or analytical approach will be used. Some application and reference will be made to oil-well casings in particular, but the solutions will not be restricted to oil-well casing alone. it must be recognized that the tubing problem involves the problem of unstability before the proportional limit of the metal is exceeded and a similar …

Investigation Of The Stress-Strain Of American Standard Or National Course Bolts, Clare Jackson Thorpe

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine, if possible, a formula for the initial tensile load that will consider the Nominal Diameter of the bolt and the yield point of the material from which the bolt is manufactured; to determine, if possible, a torque stress relation, when tightening the bolt"--Preface, page iii.

The Analysis Of Cantilever Plates With Concentrated Loads, Constant Roberts Marks Aug 1941

The Analysis Of Cantilever Plates With Concentrated Loads, Constant Roberts Marks

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

The problem of a cantilever plate or slab with variable, discontinuous, concentrated, or eccentric loading occurs frequently in engineering design. Examples are substructure walls, piers, projecting floor slabs, and gear teeth. The solution of most of these problems can be made to depend on the analysis of the plate in question loaded with one or more concentrated loads. Such analyses are available for only a few cases of loading, and no practical method is available to the designer for making any kind of a reasonably accurate stress analysis for many cases he may encounter.
