"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems in rheology. The relaxation method was first introduced by R. V. Southwell who applied it to the problem of electrical conductivity. It was later used by M. W. Emmons to solve two-dimensional heat conduction problems. The steady-state flow of fluids through porous media can be difficult or impossible by the usual analytical methods even with rather simple boundary conditions. "The injection of water in the spark ignition engine is not new. The effect of humidity in the air on the performance of the spark ignition engine probably initiated the early investigations. The water vapor in the inlet air decreases the speed of the flame front and necessitates spark advance to assure maximum power and maximum efficiency. Water particles in the air evaporate during the compression and combustion of the inducted charge and decrease the tendency of the engine to detonate. The problem of a cantilever plate or slab with variable, discontinuous, concentrated, or eccentric loading occurs frequently in engineering design. Examples are substructure walls, piers, projecting floor slabs, and gear teeth. The solution of most of these problems can be made to depend on the analysis of the plate in question loaded with one or more concentrated loads. Such analyses are available for only a few cases of loading, and no practical method is available to the designer for making any kind of a reasonably accurate stress analysis for many cases he may encounter.
