"This study examines the thermal profile and the ferrite-austenite phase fractions upon heating and cooling of 304- stainless steel powder via Selective Laser Melting (SLM). Experiments were performed to validate the ABAQUS finite element model, while the phase transformation simulation was performed using MatCalc and ThermoCalc. A correlation between the thermo-mechanical changes in ABAQUS and the microstructural changes from MatCalc was obtained by matching their cooling rates. Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing technique with which parts of nearly arbitrary shape and complexity can be produced. The parts are generated layer for layer directly out of a 3D CAD model completely without forming tools.

In this work, the selective laser technique is applied to a CoCrMo alloy. Due to its high corrosion resistance, wear-resistance, and heat resistance, this alloy is mainly used for medical or high temperature applications.

"Developing parameter sets for new materials on the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) platform has traditionally been done through the use of single line processing windows and a basic design of experiments (DOE) which would include varying machine parameters to maximize density. This study expands the traditional method by determining the main effects statistically for density, allowing for a more in depth analysis wherein the experimental results are statistically correlated to the variable machine parameters used.
