Design For Sustainability Through A Life Cycle Assessment Conceptual Framework Integrated Within Product Lifecycle Management, Renpeng Zou Jan 2018

Design For Sustainability Through A Life Cycle Assessment Conceptual Framework Integrated Within Product Lifecycle Management, Renpeng Zou

Masters Theses

The need to include sustainable design principles during product realization poses several challenges in need of research. The demand for greener products has increased while competition has shortened product realization processes. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) provides solutions in accelerating the development process and time to market by managing the information through a full life cycle of a product line. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides a way to predict the environmental impacts that should be expected over the complete life cycle of a given product, but LCA methods are not well suited to efficient comparison of product alternatives during early design ...

Improving Ventricular Catheter Design Through Computational Fluid Dynamics, Sofy Hefets Weisenberg May 2016

Improving Ventricular Catheter Design Through Computational Fluid Dynamics, Sofy Hefets Weisenberg

Masters Theses

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts are fully implantable medical devices that are used to treat patients suffering from conditions characterized by elevated intracranial pressure, such as hydrocephalus. In cases of shunt failure or malfunction, patients are often required to endure one or more revision surgeries to replace all or part of the shunt. One of the primary causes of CSF shunt failure is obstruction of the ventricular catheter, a component of the shunt system implanted directly into the brain's ventricular system. This work aims to improve the design of ventricular catheters in order to reduce the incidence of catheter obstruction ...

The Evaluation Of Sequential Optimization And Reliability Analysis, Guannan Liu Jan 2016

The Evaluation Of Sequential Optimization And Reliability Analysis, Guannan Liu

Masters Theses

"Sequential Optimization and Reliability Assessment (SORA) has been used for more than one decade for reliability-based design (RBD), but comprehensive theoretical studies on its performance have not been conducted. Further investigations on its performance are still needed. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the performance of SORA for various testing problems. The performance of SORA evaluated in this thesis includes (1) accuracy, (2) efficiency, and (3) convergence behavior or robustness with numerical testing problems. SORA is evaluated with comparison with other major RBD methodologies. The testing problems are in different scales (numbers of design variables, random variables, and ...

Comparative Study On Posture And Its Influences On Horizontal Ground Reaction Forces Generated By Muscles: Implications For Crouch Gait, Hoa Xuan Hoang Dec 2011

Comparative Study On Posture And Its Influences On Horizontal Ground Reaction Forces Generated By Muscles: Implications For Crouch Gait, Hoa Xuan Hoang

Masters Theses

Crouch gait decreases walking efficiency due to the increased knee and hip flexion during the stance phase of gait. Crouch gait is generally considered to be disadvantageous for patients with cerebral palsy; however, a crouched posture may afford biomechanical advantages that lead some patients to adopt a crouch gait.

To investigate one possible advantage of crouch gait, a musculoskeletal model created in OpenSim was placed in 15 different postures from upright to severe crouch during initial, middle, and final stance of the gait cycle. A series of optimizations were performed for each posture to maximize ground reaction forces for the ...
