Principles Of Designing Monitoring Information Systems For Small Construction Contractors, Dan Richard Pellegrino

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to develop a monitoring information system which would comply with the time and cost constraints of the small construction contractor. Every aspect of a monitoring system was considered and logically analyzed. A suggested Monitoring Information System was developed and compared to other monitoring systems in existing literature and also the monitoring system of a local contractor. It was determined by this investigation and comparison that the suggested Monitoring Information System eliminated many disadvantages of existing systems such as: 1) inaccurate monitoring of progress, 2) large number of forms to process, 3) large time lag …

Use Of Waste Glass As Asphaltic Concrete Aggregate, Charles Wayne Foster Jan 1970

Use Of Waste Glass As Asphaltic Concrete Aggregate, Charles Wayne Foster

Masters Theses

"The problem of solid waste disposal increases each year, with the annual growth in quantity of solid waste making the present means of disposal even more inadequate. Recycling of solid waste materials is an increasingly popular approach to the disposal problem. The glass component of solid waste is a very promising candidate for recycling, and this investigation studies the possibility of using waste glass as an aggregate for bituminous concrete mixtures. Objectives of this research were to determine whether a glass-asphalt mixture could be designed to meet the Marshall design criteria specified by The Asphalt Institute, to study the amount …

Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic Jan 1970

Multi-Stage Shear Testing Of A Cohesionless Soil, Robert Clyde Gullic

Masters Theses

"The multi-stage test is a procedure by which a soil's shear strength parameters can be evaluated by the use of a single sample of the material. The object of the investigation is to evaluate to what extent multi-stage testing can be used on a cohesionless material. Three types of tests, using conventional and multi-stage procedures are evaluated. They are: direct shear/consolidated drained, triaxial compression/consolidated drained and triaxial compression/consolidated undrained shear tests. It was found that multi-stage testing can easily be performed and the shear strength parameter thetaf obtained from these tests are in good agreement with those obtained from …

Dynamic Analysis Of Multistory Frames Considering Both Distributed And Lumped Mass, Mark E. Botkin Jan 1970

Dynamic Analysis Of Multistory Frames Considering Both Distributed And Lumped Mass, Mark E. Botkin

Masters Theses

"Two types of dynamic analysis of multistory structures are presented in this thesis . First presented is the dynamic stiffness matrix method in which the masses are distributed along the constituent members. This method is composed of statics, stiffness and loading matrices. The statics matrices are established from the structural configurations, the stiffness coefficients are formulated from the elastic properties of the members, and the loading matrices are functions of the time dependent forces or time dependent foundation movements. The applied forces may be uniform, concentrated, triangular or joint forces. Computer programs are given to carry out the laborious calculations …

Oxygen Uptake By The Benthal Sludge Of A Waste Stabilization Pond, Edward Landon Niedringhaus Jan 1970

Oxygen Uptake By The Benthal Sludge Of A Waste Stabilization Pond, Edward Landon Niedringhaus

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the laboratory evaluation of the benthal sludge oxygen uptake of a 6.7 acre waste stabilization pond which has served a city of 2,400 population for a period of seven years. Special emphasis is directed toward the explanation of laboratory techniques developed for this study to measure the oxygen uptake rate. The effects on oxygen consumption of temperature, nature of sludge, initial oxygen tension, and sludge consolidation are discussed. Benthal sludge samples were taken from three locations in the pond. Oxygen consumption studies were conducted in a specially designed plastic cylinder which included a novel magnetic mixing system. …

Penetration In A Graded Filter, William Chuan Shen Jan 1970

Penetration In A Graded Filter, William Chuan Shen

Masters Theses

"An experimental laboratory study conducted to examine clogging within and penetration of fines into a single layer graded filter. Hydraulic gradient, filter gradation and flow direction were varied. Forty one tests gave over six hundred individual penetration depths. The magnitude of penetration in filters with considerable variation in gradation patterns correlated with an average hydraulic radius based on the volume of voids and an approximated total surface area. It has been shown than an increased thickness of poorly graded filter will stop penetration such as that caused by seepage erosion. A relationship between hydraulic radius, penetration depth and probability of …

Shear Strength Characteristics Of Crushed Glass, Fred Ray Browning Jan 1970

Shear Strength Characteristics Of Crushed Glass, Fred Ray Browning

Masters Theses

"Drained and undrained triaxial compression tests were performed on two gradations of crushed glass in order to determine the compressibility and shear strength characteristics. Consolidation pressures varied from 10 to 100 psi. Volume changes during consolidation were discussed because of the dependency of shear strength behavior on the density condition at the end of consolidation. Stress-strain-volume change characteristics were observed in order to discuss the load-deformation and dilatancy relationships and the effects of varying density, gradation and consolidation pressure. Stress-strain properties were also determined for the undrained tests. The undrained tests were constant volume tests, thus having no dilatancy effects. …

Clay Mineralogy And Compaction Characteristics Of Residual Clay Soils Used In Earth Dam Construction In The Ozark Province Of Missouri, Arthur David Alcott Jan 1970

Clay Mineralogy And Compaction Characteristics Of Residual Clay Soils Used In Earth Dam Construction In The Ozark Province Of Missouri, Arthur David Alcott

Masters Theses

"The clay mineralogy and Standard Proctor compaction characteristics of clayey residual soils developed on the Salem Plateau of the Ozark Physiographic Province and used in earth dam construction were studied. A review of the geology of the Salem Plateau is presented along with a discussion of the factors controlling the development of soils on carbonate bedrock in a high leaching environment. The predominant soil clay mineral was found to be a poorly crystallized kaolinite rather than halloysite as has been postulated by others. Minor amounts of triple-layer minerals and an undetermined amount of an alumino-silicate gel are indicated. The effects …

Fate And Effects Of Chemically-Precipitated Phosphorus In Anaerobic Digestion, Douglas Wayne Max

Masters Theses

"This study was conducted to determine the fate of chemically-precipitated phosphorus during the overall wastewater treatment process under actual field conditions. Specific objectives were: to evaluate the removal of phosphorus with alum and sodium aluminate in a pilot plant activated sludge system, to determine the fate of the precipitated phosphorus incorporated into the microbial floc when placed in an anaerobic environment, and to observe the effect of aluminum on the digestion process. Five 38-gpd continuous-flow activated sludge pilot plant units were operated at the Rolla Love Creek trickling filter plant and were fed with settled domestic sewage. The sludge from …

Evaluation Of The Carbon Adsorption Method With Parallel Solvent Extraction Studies, Stanley Kent Wagher Jan 1970

Evaluation Of The Carbon Adsorption Method With Parallel Solvent Extraction Studies, Stanley Kent Wagher

Masters Theses

"In spite of the importance of the carbon adsorption method (CAM) in determining drinking water quality and its wide use in research and plant control studies, little work has been undertaken to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the method, especially under field conditions. This investigation was, therefore, undertaken in order to develop a test system consisting of equipment and procedures which would make possible the field evaluation of the carbon adsorption method by parallel solvent extraction studies, and to employ this system in preliminary field investigations to establish guidelines for the experimental conditions required for its effective application. The test system …

Analysis Of Parking Conditions At The University Of Missouri - Rolla And Their Comparison To Other Universities, Richard Francis Rankin

Masters Theses

"The existing parking facilities at the University of Missouri - Rolla are presently inadequate and parking demand will continue to increase in the coming years. Factual study of existing conditions by means of physical vehicle counts indicate that operational efficiency can be increased as a method of reducing the parking shortage. It was determined, by a faculty and staff questionnaire, that the automobile was not greatly required in order to carry out university business. A faculty residence density study indicated that the majority of the faculty members live farther than 7/10 of a mile from the campus. Present methods of …

Behavior Of A Remolded Silty-Clay Subjected To Sequential Loading, Lawrence Tsi-Ching Chung Jan 1970

Behavior Of A Remolded Silty-Clay Subjected To Sequential Loading, Lawrence Tsi-Ching Chung

Masters Theses

"The investigation was undertaken to determine shear strength and pore pressure parameters of a soil when subjected to sequential loading. This method is intended to similate the in-situ condition of stress application under certain field conditions. The testing procedure, a sequential triaxial shear test, is described. This test consists of successive stages of partial consolidation followed by undrained shear. Triaxial consolidation and shear strength characteristics of a sedimented remolded silty-clay are compared with the results from conventional tests on isotropically consolidated samples. The undrained strength was found to be a function of moisture content, irrespective of the method of test …

Parameters Effecting The Dynamic Properties Of A Saturated Cohesive Soil Tested In Cyclical Simple Shear, William Kenneth Andrew V Jan 1970

Parameters Effecting The Dynamic Properties Of A Saturated Cohesive Soil Tested In Cyclical Simple Shear, William Kenneth Andrew V

Masters Theses

"Cyclical simple shear tests were performed on block samples of a remolded clay mixture of 3 parts kaolinite to 1 part of bentonite mixed at 110% water content. The samples had base sizes of 8x8, 4x4, and 2x2 inches square and heights of 1, 2, 4, and 8 inches. The simple shear tests were performed by using a predetermined sinusoidal displacement, at frequencies of 1, 2, and 5 hertz. The shear modulus which was normalized by dividing it by the shear strength, and the hysteretic damping factor which was expressed as the percent of critical damping, were evaluated from a …

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress Jan 1970

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress

Masters Theses

"This investigation proposes a simplified concept for the rapid field design of protective structures, subject to attack by conventional artillery rounds, mortar rounds and small rockets. Parameters which should be considered during a rigorous design process are discussed. The number and complexity of these parameters make the rigorous design procedure too unwieldy to be efficiently used, in a limited time period, when materials are not available to comply with Standard Designs. Since the duration of an explosion pulse is very short and uncompacted soil is capable of absorbing explosive energy, this study investigates the theory that adequate protection can be …
