An Experimental Study Of Lateral Soil Pressures And Moments On Flexible Sheet Piles, James H. Donahue Jul 1970

An Experimental Study Of Lateral Soil Pressures And Moments On Flexible Sheet Piles, James H. Donahue

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In order to study the effect compaction has on lateral earth pressures exerted on and bending moments in steel sheet pile bulkheads, an experimental study was undertaken which employed the placement of a non-cohesive soil at two specific densities against three model piles of varying thicknesses. The soil was placed both in a loose and a dense state and the bending strains and deflections of the sheet piles were measured at various stages of backfill. Surface loadings were then placed after completion of the backfilling to observe the effects these loads had on the bending moments. The results of the …

Electronic Analog Computer Hydrologic Simulation Of The Upper Bear River Basin, Mohammed A. Basha May 1970

Electronic Analog Computer Hydrologic Simulation Of The Upper Bear River Basin, Mohammed A. Basha

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

OF the total precipitation falling on watersheds throughout the world, an average of approximately 85 percent returns directly to the atmosphere through evaporation and use by mountain vegetation. The remaining 15 percent moves from the watersheds as runoff and becomes available in the valleys to be used by man for irrigation, industry, recreation, and many other requirements in recent years has led to an increasing need for efficient management of available water resources, and in this regard computer modeling or simulation has proved to be a powerful tool.

The study described herein involves simulation of the hydrologic system of the …

Proceedings Of The International Symposium On Low Cost Housing Problems Related To Urban Renewal And Development, Oktay Ural Jan 1970

Proceedings Of The International Symposium On Low Cost Housing Problems Related To Urban Renewal And Development, Oktay Ural

International Symposia on Low Cost Housing Problems

PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION--We are very happy to have a second printing of the Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Low-Cost Housing Problems Related to Urban Renewal and Development. The rather quick and large demand of this publication proved to us, once more, the importance and timeliness of the concern on the topic of housing technology and production. The contributions from eighteen nations painted a real picture of housing conditions and needs around the world.

The fifty-one technical papers included in this volume have been selected intentionally in various aspects of housing to draw a complete and meaningful picture …

Case Study And Analysis Of A Low Cost Housing Project In An Urban Area In India, P. Purusothaman, Jawalker K. Sridhar Rao Jan 1970

Case Study And Analysis Of A Low Cost Housing Project In An Urban Area In India, P. Purusothaman, Jawalker K. Sridhar Rao

International Symposia on Low Cost Housing Problems

An urban development project involving residential and school buildings as an extension of Madras city is described. The analysis of the project is made using the systems approach as a problem of human settlements. The methods adopted for efficient utilisation of space at optimal cost by functional planning, use of prefabricated units and use of new constructional procedures is described. The interrelationship between environmental, technical, social, cultural, psychological, economic, financial and management factors in making decisions for the project is discussed.

An Investigation Of Mining Effluent And Water Quality In The "New Lead Belt" Of Southeastern Missouri, Hong Wen Chen Jan 1970

An Investigation Of Mining Effluent And Water Quality In The "New Lead Belt" Of Southeastern Missouri, Hong Wen Chen

Masters Theses

"A field and laboratory investigation was carried out to collect background data for stream water quality in the New Lead Belt of Southeastern Missouri. The parameters measured were temperature, hydrogen ion concentration, hardness, alkalinity, turbidity and fluorides. A prolific algal and microbial growth was found in Bee Fork Creek which receives the mining and milling wastewater effluent from the Fletcher Mine. The laboratory studies were conducted to examine the biological effects of the organic flotation reagents used in the mining operations. The studies included Gram staining of bacteria, antimicrobial effects of milling reagents, bacterial fermentation tests of sodium isopropyl xanthate …

A Study Of The Composite Action Of Light Gage Steel Deck And Concrete, Charles Sherman Bach Jr. Jan 1970

A Study Of The Composite Action Of Light Gage Steel Deck And Concrete, Charles Sherman Bach Jr.

Masters Theses

"This thesis is on the investigation of corrugated light-gage steel sheets used as the tension reinforcement for concrete slabs. The steel sheets used had embossments placed at uniform intervals over the entire length of the sheets. The composite concrete and light-gage deck steel were tested to determine a method of design for this type of composite section from an economical, safe and practical standpoint. The investigation covered the flexural, shear and bond capacity of this type of composite section"--Abstract, page ii.

A Socio-Economic Traffic Demand Prediction Model Based On A Lumped System Approach, John Edward Thompson Jan 1970

A Socio-Economic Traffic Demand Prediction Model Based On A Lumped System Approach, John Edward Thompson

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to devise a method for predicting transportation system demand based on socio-economic variables of certain physical areas. This pilot study was performed utilizing traffic flow, but minor mathematical alterations could change the transportation system to urban mass transit usage demand. An area of uniform socio-economic characteristics can be delineated and the socio-economic characteristics isolated. Each area will place a distinct demand on some existing transportation facility based on those characteristics. The physical demand can be approximated by a theoretical probability distribution. Once this internal flow generation has been approximated by the frequency distribution, it …

Computer Time-Sharing (T-S) "An Engineering Tool" For The Engineering Applications Of The Small Company, James Binford Summers Jan 1970

Computer Time-Sharing (T-S) "An Engineering Tool" For The Engineering Applications Of The Small Company, James Binford Summers

Masters Theses

"The objectives of this investigation were to illustrate the capabilities of the time-sharing (T-S) industry, identify the means by which the small sized company, with a need to solve engineering problems, can best be served through T-S, and to present T-S to these potential users. Investigation was made of distinctive T-S services to formulate a composite of the T-S industry. Examples of three distinctive T-S services were used within this composite to exemplify the variations of services within the industry. The methods a small company could use to utilize computer services were identified emphasizing T-S as the method best suited …
