Electrolyte Optimization Study For Tio2 Nanotube Electrode In Sodium Ion Batteries, Richard Wendel Cutler Dec 2015

Electrolyte Optimization Study For Tio2 Nanotube Electrode In Sodium Ion Batteries, Richard Wendel Cutler

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Batteries are ubiquitous in daily life. Sodium-ion batteries have the potential to become inexpensive alternatives to the current market products such as Lithium-ion batteries. TiO2 nanotubes have proven potential as an anode for Na-ion batteries. Electrolytes made by NaClO4 salt and carbonate-based solvents make up commonly used electrolytes in sodium ion battery research. We used electrochemical and physical characterization tests to evaluate the optimum electrolyte for this anode material in the Na system. We determined that the ClO4- ion decomposes at the TiO2 surface and promotes the formation of an unstable solid electrolyte interphase. A …

Plastic Deformation And Effective Strain Hardening Coefficient Of Irradiated Fe-9wt%Cr Ods Alloy By Nano-Indentation And Tem, Corey Kenneth Dolph Dec 2015

Plastic Deformation And Effective Strain Hardening Coefficient Of Irradiated Fe-9wt%Cr Ods Alloy By Nano-Indentation And Tem, Corey Kenneth Dolph

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study is to characterize changes in the yielding, and effective strain hardening coefficient of an oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy upon exposure to irradiation. It is well known that irradiation produces a supersaturation of defects, which alters the mechanical properties of a material. In order to engineer materials for use in advanced nuclear reactors, the long-term effects of neutron irradiation on mechanical performance must be understood. However, high-dose neutron exposure is often simulated using ion bombardment. Unfortunately, ion irradiation results in a shallow damage layer that prevents traditional bulk mechanical characterization methods from being utilized. A …

A Small Acoustic Goniometer For General Purpose Research, Michael Pook Dec 2015

A Small Acoustic Goniometer For General Purpose Research, Michael Pook

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Understanding acoustic events and monitoring their occurrence is a useful aspect of many research projects. In particular, acoustic goniometry allows researchers to determine the source of an event based solely on the sound it produces. The vast majority of the acoustic goniometry research projects used custom hardware targeted to the specific application under test. Unfortunately, due to the wide range of sensing applications, a flexible general purpose hardware/firmware system does not exist for this research. This dissertation focuses on the development of such a system which encourages the continued exploration of general purpose hardware/firmware and lowers barriers to research in …

Monitoring And Modeling The Hydrological Performance Of Extensive Green Roof Systems, Joseph Seidl Dec 2015

Monitoring And Modeling The Hydrological Performance Of Extensive Green Roof Systems, Joseph Seidl

Theses and Dissertations

Urban stormwater runoff causes many problems for watersheds located within large metropolitan areas, including such detrimental effects as flooding, erosion, pollution, and the increased risk of combined sewerage overflows. Increased amounts of impervious areas resulting from urban sprawl have also been shown to escalate stormwater flows, which exacerbates water management issues in these metropolitan areas. Water resource engineers have progressively turned toward green infrastructure to solve stormwater problems, and green roof systems represent one type of this green infrastructure. As of current, however, green roof systems are largely underused in as an effective stormwater management tool.

The major factor limiting …

Dgtd Analysis Of Electromagnetic Scattering From Penetrable Conductive Objects With Ibc, Ping Li, Yifei Shi, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hakan Bagci

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To avoid straightforward volumetric discretization, a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method integrated with the impedance boundary condition (IBC) is presented in this paper to analyze the scattering from objects with finite conductivity. Two situations are considered. 1) The skin depth is smaller than the thickness of the conductive volume. 2) The skin depth is larger than the thickness of a thin conductive sheet. For the first situation, a surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC) is employed, wherein the surface impedance usually exhibits a complex relation with the frequency. To incorporate the SIBC into DGTD, the surface impedance is first approximated by …

In Vitro Multi-Scale Patient-Specific Modeling Of Hemodynamics In Stage 1 Norwood Palliation For The Treatment Of Single Ventricle Heart Disease, Tianqi Hang

All Dissertations

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart defect in which the left ventricle is severely underdeveloped. The Norwood procedure is the first stage procedure to make an unrestrictive systemic blood flow and at the same time balance it with the pulmonary flow. This is done by constructing a neo-aorta using the pulmonary artery root and the autologous aorta, and then installing a shunt to the pulmonary artery. Variations of the Norwood surgery include the modified Blalock-Taussig (mBT) shunt, which diverts blood from the innominate artery to the pulmonary artery (PA), and the Right Ventricle Shunt (RVS), which diverts …

Electromechanical Modeling Of A Honeycomb Core Integrated Vibration Energy Converter With Increased Specific Power For Energy Harvesting Applications, Nataraj Chandrasekharan

All Dissertations

Innovation in integrated circuit technology along with improved manufacturing processes has resulted in considerable reduction in power consumption of electromechanical devices. Majority of these devices are currently powered by batteries. However, the issues posed by batteries, including the need for frequent battery recharge/replacement has resulted in a compelling need for alternate energy to achieve self-sufficient device operation or to supplement battery power. Vibration based energy harvesting methods through piezoelectric transduction provides with a promising potential towards replacing or supplementing battery power source. However, current piezoelectric energy harvesters generate low specific power (power-to-weight ratio) when compared to batteries that the harvesters …

A Study On General Assembly Line Balancing Modeling Methods And Techniques, Bryan Pearce Dec 2015

A Study On General Assembly Line Balancing Modeling Methods And Techniques, Bryan Pearce

All Dissertations

The borders of the assembly line balancing problem, as classically drawn, are as clear as any other operations research topic in production planning, with well-defined sets of assumptions, parameters, and objective functions. In application, however, these borders are frequently transgressed. Many of these deviations are internal to the assembly line balancing problem itself, arising from any of a wide array of physical or technological features in modern assembly lines. Other issues are founded in the tight coupling of assembly line balancing with external production planning and management problems, as assembly lines are at the intersection of multiple related problems in …

Robust Model Development For Evaluation Of Existing Structures, Saurabh Prabhu Dec 2015

Robust Model Development For Evaluation Of Existing Structures, Saurabh Prabhu

All Dissertations

In the context of scientific computing, validation aims to determine the worthiness of a model in supporting critical decision making. This determination must occur given the imperfections in the mathematical representation resulting from the unavoidable idealizations of physics phenomena. Uncertainty in parameter values furthers the validation problems due to the inevitable lack of information about material properties, boundary conditions, loads, etc. which must be taken into account in making predictions about structural response. The determination of worthiness then becomes assessing whether an unavoidably imperfect mathematical model, subjected to poorly known input parameters, can predict sufficiently well in its intended purpose. …

Practical Robust Geotechnical Design- Methodology And Applications, Sara Khoshnevisan Dec 2015

Practical Robust Geotechnical Design- Methodology And Applications, Sara Khoshnevisan

All Dissertations

This dissertation advances the robust geotechnical design methodology by offering improvements, which makes it more efficient and practical for the design of geotechnical systems. Robust geotechnical design (RGD) methodology seeks an optimal design, which is insensitive to, or robust against, the variation in the uncertain input parameters (called “noise factors”) by only adjusting the easy to control parameters (called “design parameters”). The main goal of robust design is to consider safety, cost and robustness simultaneously. Because the cost and the robustness are conflicting objectives, the multi-objective optimization that considers these two objectives while enforcing the safety constraint yields not a …
