Delivery Of A Fatty Acid Signal Via Rtil For Biofilm Dispersion, Rachaud M. Keyes Jan 2015

Delivery Of A Fatty Acid Signal Via Rtil For Biofilm Dispersion, Rachaud M. Keyes

Honors Theses

A number of proposed applications for ionic liquids involve ionic liquid/water interfaces, such as, chemical separations or drug delivery systems. Therefore, an understanding of the solubility and micellar behavior of ionic liquids in an aqueous environment is critical fundamental knowledge. The long term goal of our study was ionic liquids for delivery of biological active agents; therefore, we chose the anion, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Tf2N) since it promotes water stability and forms water immiscible RTILs. The study then paired the Tf2N-anion with three different classes of cations. By adding apolar substituents (-CH2-) to the cation, the size of the molecule increases in …

Targeting G-Quadruplexes Within The Adam-15 Promoter: A Novel Therapeutic Approach For Breast Cancer, Rachel L. Jenkins Jan 2015

Targeting G-Quadruplexes Within The Adam-15 Promoter: A Novel Therapeutic Approach For Breast Cancer, Rachel L. Jenkins

Honors Theses

ADAM-15 is a protein that is up-regulated in many diseases, particularly breast cancer; its over-expression is correlated with more aggressive and invasive phenotypes. The critical core promoter region of ADAM-15 is capable of forming a secondary DNA structure known as a G-quadruplex. The stabilization of this G-quadruplex has the potential to decrease the transcription of the over-expressed ADAM-15 protein. Six hundred forty compounds were screened for their ability to cause a shift in the melting temperature of an ADAM-15 oligonucleotide using FRET melt. Two compounds, NSC 146771 and NSC 260594, produced a significant shift in the melting temperature; further experimentation, …

A Guide To Process Optimization, Shannon Leeann Kynerd Jan 2015

A Guide To Process Optimization, Shannon Leeann Kynerd

Honors Theses

Optimization is improving upon an existing process. Generally, the motivation behind optimization is economical. Companies are always looking for ways to improve their process in order to maximize their profit. There are several key steps and strategies that need to be followed in order to guarantee an optimized process and ultimately the maximum profit. An analysis of the base case is essential to optimization. If the starting point is not fully known, then the amount of progress is not known. The top-down and bottom-up strategies determine the overall procedure for optimization. Top-down begins with the big picture while bottom-up starts …

Pervious Vs. Impervious Pavement: An Engineering Approach To Cost Efficiency, William Vanlandeghem Jan 2015

Pervious Vs. Impervious Pavement: An Engineering Approach To Cost Efficiency, William Vanlandeghem

Honors Theses

This research attempts to make a comprehensive comparison between the relatively new breed of pavement, pervious concrete, and asphalt, a more popular and accepted pavement type. Pervious concrete is mainly used as a pavement surface for green purposes; however, this thesis delves into the possibility that pervious concrete may be able to offer benefits that allow the green alternative to be cost efficient as well. The comparison will be made over the entirety of the surface life including each pavement design and the materials used, the surface drainage, and the maintenance of each. The pavements were analyzed from a real …

Query From Examples: An Iterative, Data-Driven Approach To Query Construction, Hao Li, Chee-Yong Chan, David Maier Jan 2015

Query From Examples: An Iterative, Data-Driven Approach To Query Construction, Hao Li, Chee-Yong Chan, David Maier

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we propose a new approach, called Query from Examples (QFE), to help non-expert database users construct SQL queries. Our approach, which is designed for users who might be unfamiliar with SQL, only requires that the user is able to determine whether a given output table is the result of his or her intended query on a given input database. To kick-start the construction of a target query Q, the user first provides a pair of inputs: a sample database D and an output table R which is the result of Q on D. As there will be …

Needed Computations Shortcutting Needed Steps, Sergio Antoy, Jacob Johannsen, Steven Libby Jan 2015

Needed Computations Shortcutting Needed Steps, Sergio Antoy, Jacob Johannsen, Steven Libby

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We define a compilation scheme for a constructor-based, strongly-sequential, graph rewriting system which shortcuts some needed steps. The object code is another constructor-based graph rewriting system. This system is normalizing for the original system when using an innermost strategy. Consequently, the object code can be easily implemented by eager functions in a variety of programming languages. We modify this object code in a way that avoids total or partial construction of the contracta of some needed steps of a computation. When computing normal forms in this way, both memory consumption and execution time are reduced compared to ordinary rewriting computations …

S-Store: Streaming Meets Transaction Processing, John Meehan, Nesime Tatbul, Cansu Aslantas, Ugur Cetintemel, Jiang Du, Tim Kraska, Samuel Madden, David Maier, Andrew Pavlo, Michael Stonebraker, Kristin A. Tufte, Hao Wang

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stream processing addresses the needs of real-time applications. Transaction processing addresses the coordination and safety of short atomic computations. Heretofore, these two modes of operation existed in separate, stove-piped systems. In this work, we attempt to fuse the two computational paradigms in a single system called S-Store. In this way, S-Store can simultaneously accommodate OLTP and streaming applications. We present a simple transaction model for streams that integrates seamlessly with a traditional OLTP system. We chose to build S-Store as an extension of H-Store, an open-source, in-memory, distributed OLTP database system. By implementing S-Store in this way, we can make …

Usage Based Topology For Dcns, Qing Yi, Suresh Singh Jan 2015

Usage Based Topology For Dcns, Qing Yi, Suresh Singh

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many data center network topologies are designed to provide full bisection bandwidth for tens of thousands of servers in order to achieve high network throughput and server agility. However, the utilization rate of DCNs on average is below 10%, which results in a significant waste of network resources and energy. Many researchers propose consolidating network traffic flows to maximize the set of idle network equipment and switching them to low power mode to save energy. In this paper, we propose using skinnier network topologies to meet performance requirements of realistic loads thus saving not only energy but capital cost as …

Positive Fragments Of Coalgebraic Logics, Adriana Balan, Alexander Kurz, Jirí Velebil Jan 2015

Positive Fragments Of Coalgebraic Logics, Adriana Balan, Alexander Kurz, Jirí Velebil

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Positive modal logic was introduced in an influential 1995 paper of Dunn as the positive fragment of standard modal logic. His completeness result consists of an axiomatization that derives all modal formulas that are valid on all Kripke frames and are built only from atomic propositions, conjunction, disjunction, box and diamond. In this paper, we provide a coalgebraic analysis of this theorem, which not only gives a conceptual proof based on duality theory, but also generalizes Dunn's result from Kripke frames to coalgebras for weak-pullback preserving functors. To facilitate this analysis we prove a number of category theoretic results on …

Optimization Of Grid Connected Micro-Grid Consisting Of Pv/Fc/Uc With Considered Frequency Control, Hamid Hasanzadehfard, Masoud Moghaddas-Tafreshi, Sayed Mehdi Hakimi Jan 2015

Optimization Of Grid Connected Micro-Grid Consisting Of Pv/Fc/Uc With Considered Frequency Control, Hamid Hasanzadehfard, Masoud Moghaddas-Tafreshi, Sayed Mehdi Hakimi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, ultracapacitors are used as short-term storages for the frequency control of grid-connected microgrid that consists of photovoltaic panels, fuel cells, and the battery packs as long-term storages. Fuel cells and battery packs have delays in load tracking; therefore, ultracapacitors are used to compensate for the sudden power fluctuations in the microgrid that occur due to the output power uncertainty of the PV arrays and the loads required in the microgrid, as well as the sudden interruption of the main grid. The microgrid consists of interruptible and uninterruptible loads. When the total produced power in the microgrid, in …

Improving The Performance Of Primal--Dual Interior-Point Method In Inverse Conductivity Problems, Ashkan Javaherian, Amir Movafeghi, Reza Faghihi, Effat Yahaghi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This study improves the performance of primal--dual interior-point method in inverse conductivity problems via replacing the conventional, complicatedly calculated scalar regularization parameter with a diagonal matrix termed ``multi-regularization parameter matrix'' here. The solution of the PD--IPM depends considerably on the choice of the regularization parameter. Calculation of the optimal regularization parameter, which yields the most accurate solution, is not simple due to the long iterative nature of the algorithm. The objective optimization, which is implemented by minimizing error in the solutions over an extensive range of the regularization parameters, yields the most accurate solution that can be achieved, although this …

An Ofdm Throughput Analysis For Cognitive Radio Application In Contiguous Or Noncontiguous Tv White Spaces, Cebrai̇l Çi̇fli̇kli̇, Ahmet Turgut Tuncer, Yusuf Öztürk Jan 2015

An Ofdm Throughput Analysis For Cognitive Radio Application In Contiguous Or Noncontiguous Tv White Spaces, Cebrai̇l Çi̇fli̇kli̇, Ahmet Turgut Tuncer, Yusuf Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Radio frequency spectrum is a finite and scarce resource. Efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum is a fundamental research issue. Since a large portion of the assigned radio frequency spectrum is used only sporadically, the bands currently allocated to TV services can be opportunistically reassigned to support broadband networking services while continuing to provide broadcast TV. The fragmented and unused TV channels named white spaces have a considerable amount of bandwidth potential and long transmission ranges. Bandwidth scalability can be supported by bonding multiple contiguous or noncontiguous consecutive channels using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cognitive radio. In this …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Denoising of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals plays a vital role in sEMG-based mechatronics applications and diagnosis of muscular diseases. In this study, 3 different denoising methods of sEMG signals, empirical mode decomposition, discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and median filter, are examined. These methods are applied to 5 different levels of noise-added synthetic sEMG signals. For the DWT-based denoising technique, 40 different wavelet functions, 4 different threshold-selection-rules, and 2 threshold-methods are tested iteratively. Three different window-sized median filters are applied as well. The SNR values of denoised synthetic signals are calculated, and the results are used to select DWT and median …

The actuator is configured into three phases and at a 6/4 pole ratio, and it has a stationary active stator along with a sliding passive translator. The stator consists of E cores and the translator consists of I cores. The actuator has a yokeless design because the stator and translator have no back iron. The E and I cores are separated from each other to provide a fault-tolerant design and …

A Fourth-Order Accurate Compact 2-D Fdfd Method For Waveguide Problems, Lokman Kuzu Jan 2015

A Fourth-Order Accurate Compact 2-D Fdfd Method For Waveguide Problems, Lokman Kuzu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this work, a fourth-order accurate 2-D finite difference frequency domain method is proposed for the analysis of general waveguide structures. Finite difference techniques have been extensively used to solve electromagnetic problems over the decades. These methods discretize the computational domain using the Yee cell, but the standard Yee scheme used in these methods is only second-order accurate. In order to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme compared to the multiresolution frequency domain method and the traditional 2-D finite difference frequency domain scheme, the dispersion characteristics of various waveguide structures are analyzed.

Load Management In A Distributed Multimedia Streaming Environment Using A Fault-Tolerant Hierarchical System, Hadi̇ Işik Aybay, Mohammad Ahmed Shah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In contrast to text-only forms of communications, multimedia uses a combination of audiovisual means alongside textual modes of communication. Streaming multimedia is such multimedia that is constantly delivered by a provider of the multimedia to a client. In streaming multimedia the streamed content is continually presented to and received by the end user. Distributed multimedia systems (DMSs) deliver multimedia content to end-users by means of distributed multimedia databases and distributed information servers. These DMSs are designed to deliver multimedia content over a network. A fault-tolerant redundant hierarchy (Red-HI)-based load management policy for a distributed multimedia streaming system is proposed in …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The memristor is a new-found circuit element and its applications in programmable circuits are also under study. Analysis of most of its combinations with other circuit elements such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors does not exist. In this work, a TiO$_{2}$ memristor model with linear dopant drift speed is used and the solution of a TiO$_{2}$ memristor and capacitor series circuit driven by a constant voltage source is given. It is then used to analyze a novel M-C oscillator circuit. In previous programmable oscillator studies, the memristance of the oscillator was assumed to be constant. However, in this study, the …

3d Imaging For Ground-Penetrating Radars Via Dictionarydimension Reduction, Muhammed Duman, Ali̇ Cafer Gürbüz Jan 2015

3d Imaging For Ground-Penetrating Radars Via Dictionarydimension Reduction, Muhammed Duman, Ali̇ Cafer Gürbüz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been widely used in detecting or imaging subsurface targets. In many applications such as archaeology, utility imaging, or landmine detection, three-dimensional (3D) images of the subsurface region is required for better understanding of the sensed medium. However, a high-resolution 3D image requires wideband data collection both in spatial and time/frequency domains. Match filtering is the main tool for generating subsurface images. Applying match filtering with the data acquisition impulse response for each possible voxel in the 3D region with the collected data requires both a tremendous amount of computer memory and computational complexity. Hence, it is …

A New Approach To The Development Of A Nonlinear Model For Micro-Pelton Turbines, Mahmut Temel Özdemi̇r, Ahmet Orhan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a new approach that is closer to the real turbine without abandoning the advantages of nonlinear modeling simplicity compromising the simplicity of the nonlinear model is proposed. The purpose of the study is to contribute to making theoretical studies of microhydroelectric power plants (MHPPs) more realistic. Studies on their control, especially frequency control, have increased with the expansion of grid-connected power plants. However, some problems have occurred when converting simulation studies of the frequency control to practical studies. The reasons for these problems are that the systems cannot be modeled completely. In this study, first, the nonlinear …

Prescient: A Predictive Channel Access Schemefor Ieee 802.15.4-Compliant Devices Considering Ieee 802.11 Coexistence, Tolga Çöplü, Sema Fatma Oktuğ

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Coexistence is among the most significant challenges for IEEE 802.15.4-compliant devices in indoor environments. Previous works have shown that IEEE 802.11-compliant devices are the major sources of interference in the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical band. In order to overcome the coexistence problem, IEEE 802.15.4-compliant devices should monitor the communication channel and access the channel when it is not in use. In this study, the impact of IEEE 802.11 traffic on IEEE 802.15.4 communication is analyzed and a novel predictive channel access scheme, PRESCIENT (PREdictive channel access SCheme for IEee 802.15.4-compliaNT devices), is proposed. The performance evaluation of the …

A New Bitwise Voting Strategy For Safety-Critical Systems With Binary Decisions, Mustafa Seçki̇n Durmuş, Oytun Eri̇ş, Uğur Yildirim, Mehmet Turan Söylemez Jan 2015

A New Bitwise Voting Strategy For Safety-Critical Systems With Binary Decisions, Mustafa Seçki̇n Durmuş, Oytun Eri̇ş, Uğur Yildirim, Mehmet Turan Söylemez

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The main issue in controlling safety-critical systems such as nuclear power reactors or railway interlocking systems is to provide high safety and reliability where the risk ratio is at the highest level because small errors might result in hazardous accidents (e.g., death or injury of many people). The N-version programming technique, where N-different modules run in parallel, can be used to improve the reliability and safety of such systems at the desired safety level. Decisions of N-different modules are then evaluated by another component, usually known as the voter, using different voting strategies. In the current study a bitwise voting …

Group Control And Identification Of Residential Appliances Using A Nonintrusive Method, Sunil Semwal, Munendra Singh, Rai Sachindra Prasad Jan 2015

Group Control And Identification Of Residential Appliances Using A Nonintrusive Method, Sunil Semwal, Munendra Singh, Rai Sachindra Prasad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Identifying and controlling (ON/OFF) electrical appliance(s) from a remote location is an essential part of energy management. This motivated us to design a system that can collect the aggregate load signature from a single point, obtain the features, and finally identify the ON state of electrical appliance(s). The proposed disaggregation technique can be divided into two modules: the first part proposes an electrical installation system to disaggregate the appliance at the circuit level, whereas the second part consists of feature selection, dimension reduction, and classification algorithms. Load signatures of electrical appliances were combined with white Gaussian noise to analyze how …

Speech Emotion Recognition Using Nonlinear Dynamics Features, Ali Shahzadi, Alireza Ahmadyfard, Ali Harimi, Khashayar Yaghmaie Jan 2015

Speech Emotion Recognition Using Nonlinear Dynamics Features, Ali Shahzadi, Alireza Ahmadyfard, Ali Harimi, Khashayar Yaghmaie

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Recent developments in man--machine interaction have motivated researchers to recognize human emotion from speech signals. In this study, we propose using nonlinear dynamics features (NLDs) for emotion recognition. NLDs are extracted from the geometrical properties of the reconstructed phase space of speech signals. The traditional prosodic and spectral features are also used as a benchmark. The Fisher discriminant ratio acts as a filter to remove irrelevant features quickly. Then a wrapper method based on a genetic algorithm and support vector machine is employed to find the best feature subset that obtains the maximum recognition rate. The classification accuracy of the …
