Thixotropic Effects In A Clay-Water System, John Arthur Mathes
Thixotropic Effects In A Clay-Water System, John Arthur Mathes
Masters Theses
"Fundamental aspects of thixotropic phenomena are described, and previous investigations of thixotropic behavior in soil systems are summarized. The complex nature of the thixotropic phenomena as well as its general occurrence in fine grained soils is described. As existing hypothesis for thixotropic behavior based on initial non-equilibrium conditions is examined. Experimental results, as determined from a testing program on the Putnam clay, verify this hypothesis. The rate and magnitude of thixotropic strength increases of the Putnam clay were determined. Shear strength determinations were made by the unconfined compression and laboratory vane shear tests. The results of the tests were compared …
Shear Strength Behavior In Silts And Clay Mixtures, Alan T. Jackson
Shear Strength Behavior In Silts And Clay Mixtures, Alan T. Jackson
Masters Theses
"A series of consolidated undrained triaxial tests with pore pressure measurements were performed on laboratory sedimented samples having various known silt to clay content ratios. The clay used was commercial grundite clay from Goose Lake, Illinois, and the silt used was extracted from Lebanon Silt Loam from Rolla, Missouri. Silt was mixed with clay in the following percentages by weight: 0%, 20%, 40%, 50%, and 80%. Results indicate an increasing angle of internal friction with an increase in silt content. The unconfined compressive strength of the samples remained constant, as would be expected in a clay, with increasing silt content …
Evaluation And Application Of Dye Tracing In A Karst Terrain, James William Scanlan
Evaluation And Application Of Dye Tracing In A Karst Terrain, James William Scanlan
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was to select and evaluate in the laboratory a tracing method appropriate for use in karstic areas, and to perform field tracing studies in the south central Missouri area bounded by the cities of Rolla, St. James, and Salem in an attempt to establish existing direct flow connections between surface and subsurface waters. Fluorescein (sodium salt), Rhodamine WT, and Rhodamine B were evaluated as tracers in the laboratory and the first two dyes were employed in the field. After careful evaluation of a number of adsorbents, extracting solvents, and detection techniques, a method consisting of …
The Effects Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Clay Soils, Thomas Michael Mcmillen
The Effects Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Clay Soils, Thomas Michael Mcmillen
Masters Theses
"Studies of the effect of grinding on clay soils are summarized. Fundamental aspects of thixotropic phenomena are also explored. Vetters clay and Lebanon silt loam are used as test soils. these soils are ground to varying degrees and the deviations in physical properties are determined. Atterberg Limits, specific gravity, grain size, X-ray diffraction, and D.T.A. tests are run on each soil batch (ground for 0 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 120 minutes). A thixotropic study, consisting of unconfined compression and laboratory vane shear tests, of each soil batch is made. The results of the tests are analyzed, compared, and …

Case History Of A Test Pile Program For The Redevelopment Of Newark Airport, Patrick De Michele
Case History Of A Test Pile Program For The Redevelopment Of Newark Airport, Patrick De Michele
Theses
A pile load test program was conducted at Newark Airport to determine the most economical piles to be utilized to support the structure in the Redevelopment of Newark Airport. The controlling criteria were the pre-determined design capacity of 50 to 100 tons for the piles and conformance to the Newark Building Code regarding the maximum allowable loads on the Airport's bearing strata and the allowable settlements for test loaded piles. Thirty-four piles, ten timber, four steel H-piles, four pre-stressed concrete, seven cobi shell and nine steel pipe piles, were driven to determine driving characteristics of the piles and the reaction …
Application Of Multivariate Analysis In Predicting Water Yields In Utah, Leei-Luoh Wang
Application Of Multivariate Analysis In Predicting Water Yields In Utah, Leei-Luoh Wang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The basic hydrologic data required to determine the water yield are usually unavailable for small basins and streams while increasing emphasis is being placed on their development. Therefore, some methods and techniques for estimating the amount of water available for development of these small units is needed .
The purpose of this study is to use the concepts and techniques of statistical analysis to develop equations which are useful in estimating the water yield of watersheds for which no stream flow records are available . The approach is an extension of earlier studies at Utah State University (1, lQ) in …
The Recovery And Characterization Of Organic Micropollutants From Missouri Subsurface Waters, John Warren Smith
The Recovery And Characterization Of Organic Micropollutants From Missouri Subsurface Waters, John Warren Smith
Masters Theses
"The main objectives of this investigation were the recovery and partial characterization of organic micropollutants from Missouri subsurface waters and the evaluation of the number of filters in series required for effective removal of organic materials from water using the Carbon Adsorption Method.
The organics were recovered from a spring and two deep wells using three large capacity (1. 5 cu. ft.) activated carbon filters in series. Chloroform and ethanol were employed as primary elutants, but acetone and benzene were also investigated. Characterization was by organoleptic, chemical, and biological determinations, toxicity measurements, and solubility partitioning.
Organic materials were found in …
Stress Analysis Of A Wall Footing Subjected To External Vertical Loads And Overturning Moments By The Finite Element Method, Adil Godiwalla
Stress Analysis Of A Wall Footing Subjected To External Vertical Loads And Overturning Moments By The Finite Element Method, Adil Godiwalla
Masters Theses
"This investigation pertains to the stress analysis by the finite element method of a wall footing subjected to external vertical loads and external overturning moments. This problem has been reduced to a two-dimensional stress analysis problem by taking a unit length of the wall. A rectangular plate - element is used throughout this investigation. The development of the matrix equations is shown and the solution is performed by digital computer. Stresses in the horizontal direction show essentially linear variation which is in agreement with simple structural theory, while stresses in the vertical direction show severe perturbation near the column load. …
The Measurement Of Explosively Induced Stresses In Rock-Like Materials With A Capacitive Transducer, Vincent Paul Crane
The Measurement Of Explosively Induced Stresses In Rock-Like Materials With A Capacitive Transducer, Vincent Paul Crane
Masters Theses
"A capacitive transducer was developed for measuring the free surface motion in Hydrostone blocks loaded by an explosive plane wave generator approximately one foot from the specimen. The charge to specimen distance was adjusted to produce a single spall, the position of the fracture being noted on the recovered specimen. The longitudinal wave velocity in each specimen was determined by the ultrasonic pulse technique before each shot. From the above measurements the stress, strain and strain rate at the point of fracture were determined. An attempt was made to determine the actual fracture time with imbedded [sic] conductive graphite rods, …

Quality Of Surface And Subsurface Water In A Missouri Carbonate Karst Terrain (Dry Fork, Norman, And Benton Creek Watersheds), James Chi Huang
Masters Theses
"Little is known about the effect of carbonate karst terrain on water quality in the United States. Karst topography occurs over a large portion of Missouri and over a significant part of other midwestern states. The objectives of this study were the determination of the quality of surface and subsurface water in carbonate karst terrain and the investigation and evaluation of the effect of rainfall and runoff on water quality in the Meramec Spring area, east of Rolla, Missouri, during both the dry and wet seasons over the period of one year. Water samples were collected at a large number …
