Aggregates are an important component of transportation infrastructure used as unbound base material and within Portland cement concrete (PCC) structures. In cold climate regions, seasonal freeze and thaw cycles cause damage to aggregate and impact pavements, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure performance. This research investigated Wisconsin quarried coarse aggregates for freeze-thaw durability as unbound aggregates as well as in PCC mixtures for pavement surface. A comprehensive laboratory testing program was conducted on 21 coarse aggregate samples consisting of calcareous and dolomitic limestone including sodium sulfate soundness, freeze-thaw testing, and absorption. The stability of titanium dioxide nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous solutions with and without anionic surfactants was investigated as a function of phase separation (sedimentation), particle size at the age of 33 and 303 days, polydispersity at 33 and 303 days, and zeta potential. Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) has been used as an important nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method for detection of structural flaws such as surface cracks or corroded regions. The aim of this study was to develop a LC-MS/MS analytical method to quantitate aselection of pesticides that included: 2,4−dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D), carbaryl, dicamba, imidacloprid, malathion, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA), and methylchlorophenoxypropionic acid (MCPP). Chromatographic and mass spectrum conditions were optimized by analyzing full scans, selected ion monitoring (SIM) scans, product ion (PI) scans, which developed a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) scan. Additionally, a pretreatment and cleanup strategy was designed and optimized using liquid-liquid extraction. The method demonstrated acceptable mean percent recovery of 83.2% ±12.56% at a spiked level of 10 ng/mL. The developed quantitative method was applied to groundwater from …

This report describes a study of adhesive anchors in two types of tension tests. Confined tension (CT) tests are relatively easy to implement; however, the closely placed reaction may create undesirable and unrealistic confining condition to test anchor. Unconfined tension (UCT) tests are then needed to verify the tensile capacities, which usually correspond to lower bond strength than those from CT tests. Therefore, bond strengths obtained from CT tests must be reduced, and a reduction factor of 0.75 has been stipulated in ACI 355.4 document. In the present work, the side resistance of an energy pile subjected to a significant number of thermal cycles in saturated Kaolin clay was investigated through small-scale pile tests, direct shear tests, and triaxial tests. Before applying compressive load, relative shearing displacement, or deviator stress, up to 36 cooling/heating cycles were performed on the soil-foundation interface and soil. By purifying raw biogas, or removing the carbon dioxide, it can be upgraded to biomethane, which can be used to generate heat and electricity or as a substitute for natural gas. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings garnered international attention, nearly a decade ago, for elevating wood construction to new heights on fully panelized assemblies of floors and walls. While highly regarded as a sustainable building material, use of CLT as a structural wall system depends on seismically resilient strategies like controlled rocking.
