Parametric Analysis And Enhancement Of The Burst Capacity Model For Composite-Repaired Corroded Pipelines, Rodrigo Silva Silva-Santisteban Aug 2023

Parametric Analysis And Enhancement Of The Burst Capacity Model For Composite-Repaired Corroded Pipelines, Rodrigo Silva Silva-Santisteban

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

One of the main causes of pipeline failures is corrosion, which leads to a localized loss of the pipe wall thickness and hence compromises the capacity of the pipeline. Composite repair is a method to rehabilitate corroded pipelines. Design codes such as ASME PCC-2 are commonly used to design the repair thickness. As the predictive accuracy to determine the burst capacity of a composite repaired pipeline with existing models is generally poor, the main objective of the present thesis is to provide insights on the parameters that affect the burst capacity and propose improvements to the prediction of burst capacity …

Standing seam metal roofs (SSMR) are a roofing system made up of prefabricated panels secured to the underlying structural purlins using concealed clips. The present study sought to develop a simplified code-approach for evaluating SSMRs. A model of the wind field and wind loads was validated using wind tunnel data from Arif (2017), influence functions and clip layout from Xia (2022), and compared the results to ASCE 7-22. Worst case enveloped GCp were compared by area for three different models: (i) ASCE Method, which gives wind loads based on bare deck roof, (ii) Clip Tributary Area (CTA) Method, which assumed …

Geoelectrical Signatures Of Acid-Generating Mine Waste Rock, Difan Su May 2023

Geoelectrical Signatures Of Acid-Generating Mine Waste Rock, Difan Su

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Acid mine drainage (AMD) contamination associated with waste rock piles (WRPs) at mining sites is a global concern, and understanding the generation and release of AMD from these piles is highly desirable. Traditional WRP monitoring techniques involve the installation of monitoring wells and periodic core sampling; however, these approaches are invasive, expensive and can only provide data with limited spatial and temporal resolution. An attractive alternative is non-invasive geophysical techniques that can provide non-invasive and continuous information on subsurface features and processes. This thesis aims to investigate the feasibility of the spectral induced polarization (SIP) method for monitoring changes in …

Design Of Stick-Framed Wood Roofs Under Extreme Wind Loads, Caspar Bain Oct 2022

Design Of Stick-Framed Wood Roofs Under Extreme Wind Loads, Caspar Bain

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Light-frame wood construction comprises nearly 90% of the housing industry in
Canada and the United States. The roofs of these houses can be constructed either
entirely on site or using prefabricated trusses. Assembling the roof structure on site,
otherwise known as stick-framing, is a framing technique with current code guidelines
that are based on past practice and limited consideration of wind loads. This makes
these roof structures susceptible to failure in high-speed wind events, such as tornadoes. Around 90% of all tornadoes in Canada fall in or below the EF-2 category,
making it a possible target for design of wood-frame …

An Explicit Model For Simplified Flutter Analysis Of Long-Span Bridges, Tibebu Hunegn Birhane Oct 2022

An Explicit Model For Simplified Flutter Analysis Of Long-Span Bridges, Tibebu Hunegn Birhane

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The collapse of the First Tacoma Bridge in 1940 at a wind speed of about 18m/s triggered the need to recognize aerodynamic stability as a design constraint for long-span bridges. The advancement in understanding and modeling of dynamic wind effects has played a significant role in the realization of long-span bridges with a clear span of up to 2 km. However, the need to span longer, the risk of windstorms exceeding the strongest recorded in the past, and consequently, the quest for optimized design solutions continue to evolve.

A rigorous nature of aerodynamic stability analysis techniques poses a challenge to …

Modelling And Simulation Of Nonstationary Non-Gaussian Wind Speed And Wind Pressure Coefficients, Minyu Xiao Aug 2022

Modelling And Simulation Of Nonstationary Non-Gaussian Wind Speed And Wind Pressure Coefficients, Minyu Xiao

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The time series of the wind speed from hurricane and downburst events can exhibit nonstationary non-Gaussian characteristics. Moreover, the time series of the wind pressure for a stationary wind may not be Gaussian. This thesis is focused on analyzing, characterizing, and simulating nonstationary/stationary Gaussian/non-Gaussian of wind speed and wind pressure coefficients by using time-frequency transform techniques such as the S-transform (ST) and discrete orthonormal S-transform (DOST). It is shown that by removing the mean of downburst winds, the multivariate nonstationary downburst wind speed processes can be efficiently decomposed and simulated by applying ST and DOST. It was also found that …

Performance Of Fouled Railroad Superstructure Subjected To Traversing Heavy Haul Trains, Majid Kh Touqan May 2022

Performance Of Fouled Railroad Superstructure Subjected To Traversing Heavy Haul Trains, Majid Kh Touqan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Railway transportation offers capacity, efficiency, and safety to serve the needs of modern societies for moving freight and people. Therefore, the sustainability and safety of railroad infrastructure are of paramount importance for securing transportation needs. Freight train passby loads increase the surface deformation of railroad substructure due to cumulative plastic strains, which lead to surface deviation of the railroad tracks. Correspondingly, railroad maintenance is necessary to sustain track geometry alignment and to prevent deterioration of the sub-structure over time, which can increase operating costs significantly. Therefore, this thesis evaluates the performance of fouled railroad superstructure through laboratory testing of fouled …

Analysis Of Standing Seam Metal Roofs Subjected To Extreme Wind Loads, Yuchao Xia

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Standing seam metal roof (SSMR) systems are widely used in low-rise buildings. This study aims to understand the behavior of SSMR systems, especially the failure mechanisms, under severe wind loads. Full-scale experiments conducted at Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes make it possible to examine the performance of SSMR systems with realistic dimensions and boundary conditions. The induced loads on the clips could be measured directly. The results show that there is a linear relationship between the wind pressure and clip reaction under low wind pressure (less than 500 Pa). It is found that load sharing among clips changes at …

Physical Investigation Of Downburst Winds And Applicability To Full Scale Events, Federico Canepa Feb 2022

Physical Investigation Of Downburst Winds And Applicability To Full Scale Events, Federico Canepa

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Thunderstorm winds, i.e. downbursts, are cold descending currents originating from cumulonimbus clouds which, upon the impingement on the ground, spread radially with high intensities. The downdraft phase of the storm and the subsequent radial outflow that is formed can cause major issues for aviation and immense damages to ground-mounted structures. Thunderstorm winds present characteristics completely different from the stationary Gaussian synoptic winds, which largely affect the mid-latitude areas of the globe in the form of extra-tropical cyclones. Downbursts are very localized winds in both space and time. It follows that their statistical investigation, by means of classical full scale anemometric …

Erosion Control Of Steep Open Channels Using Articulated Concrete Blocks, Mohammadomid Marandi Feb 2022

Erosion Control Of Steep Open Channels Using Articulated Concrete Blocks, Mohammadomid Marandi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Overtopping flow can undermine the stability of hydraulic structures including embankments and spillways through the shear stress and the subsequent soil erosion. Increased flow velocity can cause scour, which can result in the failure of dams, bridges, and overall open channel hydraulic structures. Sediment transport is another crucial issue in open channels that can cause severe socioeconomic and environmental consequences. Two general approaches are commonly considered for scour prevention. The first approach involves flow modifications to minimize the corresponding effects on the structures. The second approach is associated with bed armoring and placing physical barriers on the natural bedding such …

Behavior Of Wind Turbine Towers And Blades Under Tornado Wind Fields, Mohamed Abugazia

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The installation rate of wind turbines around the world is increasing significantly. Therefore, wind turbine farms are constructed in plentiful wind resources areas that put a considerable number of wind turbine towers under severe wind conditions. As a result, failures due to unexpected wind loads on either the blades or the tower are increasing. In addition, wind turbines are designed to resist synoptic wind loads as per the current guidelines, which do not consider high-intensity wind (HIW) events such as tornadoes. The built-in-house numerical code “HIW-WT” has been developed in this study to model wind turbines under three-dimensional wind fields …

Crack Self-Healing In Alkali-Activated Materials: From Mechanisms To Strategies For Enhancing The Healing Efficiency, Lei Zhang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The increasing concern for decarbonizing concrete manufacturing is calling for sustainable construction materials since portland cement production contributes about 8% of global anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) have emerged as promising alternative binders to curb carbon dioxide emissions from portland cement production and allow more sustainable construction. In addition, AAMs have desirable mechanical properties and high resistance to acidic and sulphate attacks.

Like conventional concrete, AAMs are quasi-brittle materials with low tensile strength, demonstrating susceptibility to cracking. Cracking-initiated deteriorations such as reinforcing steel corrosion, sulphate attack, and freeze-thaw damage, pose severe threats to the service life of concrete …

Uncertainties In Internal Pressure Of Oil Pipelines And Implications For The Reliability Analysis, Yue Liu Aug 2021

Uncertainties In Internal Pressure Of Oil Pipelines And Implications For The Reliability Analysis, Yue Liu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The internal pressure is the most important operational load for oil and gas pipelines. The maximum operating pressure (MOP) is the maximum pressure the pipeline is qualified to be operated according to a given standard. In deterministic fitness-for-service (FFS) assessment of in-service pipelines containing flaws such as corrosion defects and cracks, the remaining pressure containment capacity of the pipeline is evaluated and compared with MOP multiplied by a factor of safety to determine if immediate rehabilitation actions for the pipeline are necessary. However, the actual internal pressure of an in-service pipeline is however uncertain and fluctuates with time. Due to …

Implication Of City Growth On Wind-Induced Loads For Cladding And Structural Design, Hadil M. Abdallah Apr 2021

Implication Of City Growth On Wind-Induced Loads For Cladding And Structural Design, Hadil M. Abdallah

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As cities grow, the urban topology changes in density resulting in continuous variations in wind flow. The interaction of flow with this changing surrounding environment drives the aerodynamics to become more complex and varying, subjecting the building to significant changes in wind-induced-loads both on structural and non-structural elements. In this study, a series of boundary layer wind tunnel tests are conducted to investigate the impact of city growth on cladding and structural loading by using a typical tall building adopted from the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Council (CAARC) building model. The city growth is represented by five different generic surrounding configurations, …

A Partial-Turbulence Approach To Estimate Peak Wind Loads On Low-Rise Building Roofs, Yitian Guo Feb 2021

A Partial-Turbulence Approach To Estimate Peak Wind Loads On Low-Rise Building Roofs, Yitian Guo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Quasi-steady (QS) theory is a commonly-used tool in wind engineering for the assessment of wind loads on structures induced by large-scale gusts. However, the QS-based approach tends to underestimate peak loads significantly since it fails to capture the effects of small-scale and body-generated turbulence. The objective of this thesis is to develop a method to estimate peak wind loads on low-rise roofs based on a partial-turbulence approach, i.e., using the QS vector model for loads induced by large-scale fluctuations from the incident flow, and a separate statistical model to account for the effects due to body-generated turbulence.

Wind tunnel tests …

Finite Element Analysis Of Buckling Capacity Of Conical Steel Tanks Considering Field-Measured Initiation Imperfections – A Case Study, Haoyi Zhang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The geometric imperfection in elevated steel conical water tanks is a key factor that influences the buckling capacity of the tank. Current considerations of imperfections in the design of conical tanks are based on theoretical analysis, whereby the imperfection shapes and locations are assumed to have the most critical impact on the capacity. This thesis investigates the initial imperfections of an actual stiffened liquid-filled steel conical tank (LFCT) based on high-resolution laser scan measurement data of the tank geometry.

In the first part of this study, detailed analyses of the laser scan data were carried out to extract the global …

Experimental Study Of Tornado-Induced Pressures, Aya Kassab Jan 2021

Experimental Study Of Tornado-Induced Pressures, Aya Kassab

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The increased devastation associated with tornadic flow-fields in terms of human lives or destruction of properties and their subsequent economic losses highlights the significance of understanding the tornado vortex structure, particularly near the ground where the majority of this destruction happens. While the body of research in this area is increasing there is a lack of resolution associated with physical near-surface measurements in tornado-like vortices (TLVs) and the effects of translation, surface roughness, and surface vortex dynamics are not yet well understood.

In order to address these gaps, high spatial and temporal surface pressure measurements were carried out at WindEEE …

Effects Of City Growth On Tall Building Cladding Fatigue, Hang You Dec 2020

Effects Of City Growth On Tall Building Cladding Fatigue, Hang You

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As city develops there will be changes in the aerodynamic characteristics due to varying building surrounding and topology. For example, the city growth around a tall building can cause an increase in wind load due to venturi or wake effects or decrease due to sheltering effects depending on the type of surrounding. The densification of cities will also increase the turbulence level due to wake effects. In the present study, the implication of these changes on the aerodynamic forces on cladding connections is investigated. With increased fluctuations in the wind loads, the cladding connections will also experience stress fluctuations, which …

Geo-Structural Analysis Of Integral Abutment Bridges, Biyi Li Dec 2020

Geo-Structural Analysis Of Integral Abutment Bridges, Biyi Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Integral abutment bridges are jointless bridges where bridge decks and girders are integrated with abutments. The longitudinal displacements and rotations of the bridge are partially accommodated by the soil-pile system wherein the soil surrounding the piles generates active and reactive lateral forces when the piles deflect due to the movement of the superstructure. Since the soil stress-strain responses are inherently nonlinear, the pile deflection and the soil stiffness are interdependent. Consequently, evaluating soil-pile interactions requires a detailed geo-structural analysis. There are two common approaches used to idealize the soil-pile interactions for laterally loaded piles: the p-y and continuum mechanics approaches …
