The Role Of Theory In Quantitative Data Analysis, Terri D. Pigott
The Role Of Theory In Quantitative Data Analysis, Terri D. Pigott
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
If you take theory and models seriously, then (a) you need to elaborate clearly for yourself ‘what counts’ and how things supposedly fit together, and (b) you must hold yourself accountable to data.… From my perspective, theory is – or should be – the lifeblood of the empirical scientist. (Schoenfeld, 2010, p. 105)
The process of theorizing, collecting evidence, testing theory, revising theory, and then working through the cycle again is the basis of science. Theory is no less important when conducting a data analysis using quantitative methods. All statistical textbooks spend significant space on discussing the assumptions of statistical …
Is ‘Small’ Always Small And ‘Big’ Always Big? Re-Reading Educational Developments In Small (And Micro) States, Tavis D. Jules, Patrick Ressler
Is ‘Small’ Always Small And ‘Big’ Always Big? Re-Reading Educational Developments In Small (And Micro) States, Tavis D. Jules, Patrick Ressler
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
This volume is concerned with a topic that has only relatively recently started to attract the attention it deserves: educational developments in small states. The volume is guided by the question (i) if and how small states deal with certain policy challenges to their education systems that research has identified as particularly important for their future development, and (ii) whether there is something like typical ‘small state behavior’ in educational matters. The volume seeks to contribute to a genuinely comparative approach to education in small states. Moreover, widening conventional definitions of smallness, it aims to advance research in the field …
Donghak (Eastern Learning), Self-Cultivation, And Social Transformation: Towards Diverse Curriculum Discourses On Equity And Justice, Seungho Moon
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
This inquiry aims to advance curricular discourses on equity and social transformation by reviewing Korea’s indigenous philosophy and religion, Donghak [東學 Eastern Learning]. I explicate the ways in which the democratic ideals of equity and justice were implemented in nineteenth- and twentieth-Korean society, founded upon the “my mind is your mind” [吾心卽汝心] ontology. Three major philosophical-theological concepts are investigated, including serving God in the subject [侍天主 Shi-chun-ju], keeping a pure mind and correcting the energy [守心正氣 Sushim-jungqi], and creating a new cosmic world [開闢 Gae-byeok]. These concepts extend curricular discourses on equity, social transformation, and community in the crisis of …

Investigating The Effects Of Student Engagement On Latina/O Community College Students, Manuel Salgado
Dissertations
As the growth of the largest ethnic minority group, Latina/os, continues to grow there is an increasing concern that the current educational system is not effectively meeting the academic needs of this group of students. The community college sector has gained greater recognition for its potential to meet the needs of a much broader scope of students, particularly low-income and students of color. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the Latina/o experience and the factors that contribute to college success among community college students. Specifically, this study used hierarchical multiple regression and logistic regression analysis to investigate …
