Discourse Analysis Of Interpersonal Features In Esl And Jsl Textbooks, Yukina Takahira
Discourse Analysis Of Interpersonal Features In Esl And Jsl Textbooks, Yukina Takahira
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Textbooks play an important role in language classrooms. They serve as models for language use in a target community and significantly influence language learners in their development of language use and perceptions of the target community. In traditional grammar teaching, teachers seldom look into linguistic choices at the discourse level and mainly use language textbooks to focus on grammatical accuracy at the sentence level. Language cannot be divorced from the context and culture of its use; contextual and cultural aspects of language are inherent in discourse. Language textbooks provide not only the needed linguistic resources, but also reflect the interpersonal …
The Relationship Between Teacher Planning Time And Eighth Grade Reading Achievement In West Virginia Schools, Anne Marie Monterosso
The Relationship Between Teacher Planning Time And Eighth Grade Reading Achievement In West Virginia Schools, Anne Marie Monterosso
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Widespread educational research supports the implementation of collaborative teacher planning time or Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) as a means to increase student achievement. However, corresponding gains in student achievement are not always evident in schools where PLCs are implemented. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student achievement and the amounts and types of teacher planning. The population for this study consisted of 174 West Virginia public schools housing 8th grade students. Individual and collaborative planning time were analyzed in comparison to reading achievement. Demographic information and principals’ perspectives on the effectiveness of teacher collaborative teams …

A Study Of Kindergarten Teachers' Ability To Teach The Kindergarten Informational Text Common Core Standards In Fifteen West Virginia School Districts, Shelly Ann Ratliff
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study sought to determine kindergarten teachers’ perceived knowledge of the informational text Common Core State Standards within the population of 185 kindergarten teachers in 15 West Virginia counties.
A four part researcher-developed survey was mailed to each participant. Subjects were also given the option of participating in a follow-up telephone interview and interviewees were asked a series of questions based on a researcher-developed interview protocol. Subjects that participated in the interviews were asked if they were willing to be observed by the researcher for 30 minutes during reading instruction and an observation checklist was used to guide the time …

The Effect Of The Pies Mnemonic Strategy On The Word Problem Solving Skills Of Middle School Students, Lisa A. Short
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the PIES mnemonic strategy on the word problem solving skills of middle school students in inclusive math classes. Participants in the study were 109 students in a rural middle school in a mid-Atlantic state. Seventy-five participants were normally achieving students, and 34 were students with disabilities (Other Health Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, and Emotional/Behavioral Disorders). Teaching See The Sound Visual Phonics To Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Kindergarteners, Alison Stevenson
Teaching See The Sound Visual Phonics To Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Kindergarteners, Alison Stevenson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a manual phonics intervention program on the phonics acquisition skills of kindergarten students with hearing impairments. Recent research of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students who received See the Sound Visual Phonics (SSVP) as an intervention alongside phonics instruction programs indicated an improvement in grapheme-phoneme correspondence regardless of types of hearing loss. Ye, W., Spychala, H., Harris, R. S., & Oetting, T. L. (2013) report that there is a lack of research investigating the explicit instruction of phonic skills to DHH students and its subsequent impact on reading …

Paraprofessional Perceptions Of Training And Professional Development, Paige C. Stratton
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Paraprofessionals, also called teacher’s aides, in Lincoln and Putnam counties in West Virginia were surveyed to gain their perceptions of the effectiveness of the state’s training requirements and professional development. Questions on how well the current requirements prepares paraprofessionals for their jobs and what should be added yielded moderately positive opinions with suggestions for classes on individual disabilities and a practicum being added. Questions on professional development showed moderately positive opinions on the effectiveness of current professional development. The Effectiveness Of Graphic Organizers On The Comprehension Of Social Studies Content By Students With Disabilities, Martha Lynn Mann
The Effectiveness Of Graphic Organizers On The Comprehension Of Social Studies Content By Students With Disabilities, Martha Lynn Mann
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Today, more students with disabilities are being served in inclusive classrooms and are required to achieve the high expectations set by the 21st Century standards. Many are not being successful, due to the difficulty of differentiating between what is important and is not important in the social studies textbooks. Research suggests that graphic organizers can help facilitate learning through visual representations, but they are not being utilized to help students in the comprehension and achievement of the curriculum content. This study focused on the effectiveness of “concept/event maps and sequence chains.” These two types of graphic organizers were utilized during …

Describing The Spoken Discourse Practices Of Second And Third Grade Classroom Teachers In Appalachia, Natasha Janel Scott
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In order to meet the academic demands of the school system, school-aged children must be able to understand the language (discourse) of their teachers and the curricular expectations for verbal expression. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), working within the schools, need to identify and include in their therapy planning the learning supports that will contribute to students’ classroom success. One useful data-set for this planning is knowledge of the types and levels of discourse used and expected by the classroom teacher. The purpose of this study was to examine the spoken discourse practices of second and third grade teachers in Appalachia. By …

Teacher Attitudes Toward Post-Secondary Transition Planning, Vicki Wallen
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study is to survey special education teachers in a rural high school in a rural Mid-Atlantic state. The survey collected data about attitudes and perceptions of the transition planning process and how these attitudes impact the amount of instructional time that is spent teaching self-determination skills to their students. Generally, the survey results indicated that although teachers feel that transition planning is important, they also find it difficult to incorporate self-determination instruction with the Common Core curriculum. Less than half of the respondents indicated that they feel as though the transition curriculum that they use effectively …

Teaching High School Students Scientific Concepts Using Graphic Organizers, Kyle Lusk
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In the current study, the effect of using graphic organizers as a teaching method in a special education classroom was compared to the effectiveness of lecture style teaching in a regular education classroom. It was hypothesized that the use of graphic organizers in a special education classroom would result in a greater difference between the pre-and post-test measures than the group that was taught using lecture style instruction. Each classroom was given the same pre-test, followed by four weeks of instruction, then the same post-test. A paired samples t-test indicated that there was a significant difference observed in both groups, …
