Evaluations are used to determine a program’s merit. “Germ City” utilizes experiential learning of adequate hand washing skills. An elementary school in southwestern West Virginia served to determine if the evaluation design for “Germ City” would prove to be an effective assessment for the hand-washing program. Four hundred and eighty-four participants completed an eight-question pre/post test; one hundred and forty-nine students underwent a hand quadrant evaluation. In addition, a soap and paper towel usage log was recorded. Fifty-four percent of the participants were male, forty-six percent female (n=483) with a mean grade level of 3.6 (n=484). The Use Of Aesthetics In A Comprehensive Art Curriculum, Michelle Lynn Loudermilk

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study focuses on using aesthetics in the art education curriculum. It also suggests a variety of approaches through which art educators may implement aesthetics in the classroom. Discussions of aesthetics were found in writings of Plato and Aristotle and continue to this day. Philosophers have defined aesthetics as a theory of the beautiful. Educators took this idea a step further in developing curricula and methods of educating that include aesthetics. It has been said in art education literature that aesthetics gives those who practice it a more complete understanding of art. To show the extent of benefits that aesthetics …

An Analysis Of Client Records To Determine The Efficacy Of A Child Abuse Prevention Program For Parents, Monica Lynn Dellamea Jan 2002

An Analysis Of Client Records To Determine The Efficacy Of A Child Abuse Prevention Program For Parents, Monica Lynn Dellamea

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The alarming amount of abuse and maltreatment incurred by children in the United States has drawn large scale public attention only over the past century. Governmental agencies have since implemented programs to protect children from abusers after the abuse has been reported and sufficiently proven. Over recent decades new types of programs have originated to protect children before abuse occurs by educating parents who possess high risk factors for abusing children. These types of programs operate on the assumption that if parents can become knowledgeable about basic fundamentals of child development, learn to deal with daily stressors and challenges, and …

Poor Rural Neighborhoods And Early School Achievement, Teresa R. Eagle, Robert Bickel, Cynthia Smith Jan 2002

Poor Rural Neighborhoods And Early School Achievement, Teresa R. Eagle, Robert Bickel, Cynthia Smith

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

School consolidation and the search for economies of scale are threatening to render the neighborhood school obsolete. Nevertheless, students and their families do live in neighborhoods. Consequently, education researchers have asked if there are neighborhood-based advantages and disadvantages which influence student achievement. Research has yielded conflicting results. This may be due to failure to properly define and measure neighborhood, acknowledging variation in its nature from place to place. We use ethnographic material to help operationalize the concept neighborhood for use in quantitative research on two very poor, rural counties in West Virginia. We then do a contextual analysis to gauge …

To provide equitable services and access to off-campus students, librarians must meet the challenges of the digital divide and the geographic divide. Instruction and document delivery are key services that can determine how successful a library is in meeting its responsibility to distance learning. This session will focus on technological solutions to instruction, access, and document delivery in technology-challenged and remote environments.
