Amor Y Trascendencia En La Literatura De Carlos Fuentes, David William Hamilton Jan 2017

Amor Y Trascendencia En La Literatura De Carlos Fuentes, David William Hamilton

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In the literary works of Carlos Fuentes, transcendence of spatial-temporal reality is driven by the protagonists' desires. As a result, a multifaceted perspective of love is presented in the midst of moral conflicts and ambiguous endings. This study examines the roles of love and the instances of transcendence in nine of Fuentes' stories. In doing so, it establishes the connection between love and transcendence in these works, considers the implications of these connections, and identifies distinctions between six modes of transcendence that Fuentes employs. This research begins by presenting an overview of the multifaceted nature of love, as well as …

Singing Portuguese Nasal Vowels: Practical Strategies For Managing Nasality In Brazilian Art Songs, André Campelo Jan 2017

Singing Portuguese Nasal Vowels: Practical Strategies For Managing Nasality In Brazilian Art Songs, André Campelo

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The articulation of Portuguese nasalized vowels poses some articulatory problems accompanied by negative acoustic effects for the performance of Brazilian art songs. The main objective was to find strategies that permit the singer to conciliate an idiomatic pronunciation of these vowels with a well-balanced resonance, a desirable quality in classical singing. In order to devise these strategies, the author examined sources dealing with nasalized vowels from varied perspectives: acoustic properties of vowel nasalization, phonetic and phonological aspects ofBrazilian Portuguese (BP), historical views on nasality in singing, and recent vocal pedagogy research. In addition to the overall loss of sonority, the …

Los Cautivos De Argel, Natalio Ohanna

All Books and Monographs by WMU Authors

A Minority's Minority: An Ethnographic Study Of Sephardic Jewish Community In Atlanta, Zachary J. Dooley Jan 2017

A Minority's Minority: An Ethnographic Study Of Sephardic Jewish Community In Atlanta, Zachary J. Dooley

DISCOVERY: Georgia State Honors College Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper explores the Sephardic Community in Atlanta through the lens of an ethnographic study of a micro-culture. The methodology that was employed in order to complete this research was that of a standard ethnography, i.e. interviews, observations, and comparison with current research on the community. Throughout the paper, the Sephardic culture is contrasted with its larger Eastern European counterparts, the Ashekenazim. Their cultures, as they exist internationally as well as the Atlanta area, are a focal point of the paper so as to have a well established point of reference to which to compare the Sephardic Atlanta culture. The …

Toggling The Switches, Zach Thomas Jan 2017

Toggling The Switches, Zach Thomas

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

In this paper, I use Richard Lanham's work within the field of rhetoric to explore the rhetorical implications of multilingualism and code switching. Specifically, I will discuss and question some of the basic assumptions of employing another language: What is at stake when we communicate with others in another language, especially native speakers? How might using an L2 language and recognizing/using different dialects within that language cause a speaker to reconsider their native tongue? What does the presence of numerous regional peculiarities and nonstandard varieties within languages say about our desire for "ideal" or "standard" speech?

La Transgresora Fetichista: Los Efectos De La Dictadura Franquista En La Evolución Del Discurso Sexual Español, Marisa Lee Iola Yerkes Jan 2017

La Transgresora Fetichista: Los Efectos De La Dictadura Franquista En La Evolución Del Discurso Sexual Español, Marisa Lee Iola Yerkes

Senior Independent Study Theses

Aztec Antichrist : Christianity, Transculturation, And Apocalypse On Stage In Two Sixteenth-Century Nahuatl Dramas, Ben Leeming

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation centers around two recently-discovered early works of indigenous American literature, a pair of religious plays that take as their subject matter the medieval legend of Antichrist. The author of this dissertation located the plays, which are written in Nahuatl, the language of the Nahua (or “Aztec”) people, within a bound manuscript dating to the later half of the sixteenth century that is currently held in the library of the Hispanic Society of America in New York. The manuscript is signed in multiple places by a Nahua named Fabián de Aquino, in whose hand the plays are written. This …

What Rhyme Tells Us About The Status Of Homogeneous Diphthongs In Spanish, Juan Carlos Castillo Jan 2017

What Rhyme Tells Us About The Status Of Homogeneous Diphthongs In Spanish, Juan Carlos Castillo

Faculty Publications

This article addresses the status of homogeneous diphthongs in Spanish (those formed of two high vocoids, usually spelled iu or ui) to try to determine which vocoid acts as the syllable nucleus and which is the glide. It has generally been assumed that the order is glide-vowel (rising-like diphthong) but with little factual substantiation. A study of examples of rhyme from different ages in Spanish poetry and theatre in verse confirms the strong tendency for these diphthongs to act as rising-like.

Activating Informality: Negotiating Urban Identities In Bolivia And Brazil, Georgia E. Gempler Jan 2017

Activating Informality: Negotiating Urban Identities In Bolivia And Brazil, Georgia E. Gempler

Latin American Studies Honors Projects

Drawing on original research, this paper explores the relationship between community identity and informality in Bolivia and Brazil, answering the question “How does informality influence and operate as identity in the social imaginary of urban Bolivia and Brazil?” Based on case studies of informal settlements in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia and Niterói, Brazil, I argue that informality is a tool of social control, community resistance, and identity consolidation. Community identity is informed by the territorial stigmatization of place through national conceptualizations of race and violence, and histories of marginality, resulting in resistance identity and insurgent citizenships.

Cruzando Fronteras De Género(S): La Dislocación Del "Bildungsroman" Y La Construcción Política Del Sujeto, Silvia Roig Jan 2017

Cruzando Fronteras De Género(S): La Dislocación Del "Bildungsroman" Y La Construcción Política Del Sujeto, Silvia Roig

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

This study shows that Aurora Bertrana’s novels subvert the traditional Bildungsroman and uses the techniques of the Novel of Female Development with (auto) biographical characteristics. The core of my analysis is in the friction, the disruption and the confrontation between the subject and the social system represented by the family, the school and the community. Bertrana’s novels underline that men, similarly to women, are under a strong pressure to adopt a specific role according to heterosexual norms. Bertrana’s work demonstrate that women writers, like men, can introduce social, cultural and political innovations and experiment with a new literature genre.

Pirandello And Satire. The Imaginary Journey Of Four Authors In Search Of A Character According To Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff (1889-1930), Stefano Giannini

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

Drawing on a little-known work by Scott-Moncrieff, this article investigates Luigi Pirandello’s intellectual and literary reach across genres and space, from theater to pamphlets, from Italy to the English-speaking world. A talented writer and translator, Charles K. Scott-Moncrieff published “The Strange & Striking Adventures of Four Authors in Search of a Character” by P. G. Lear & L. O in 1926. The title of the pamphlet, and the acronym of the fictional author are references to Pirandello and to his Six Characters in Search of an Author. Scott-Moncrieff had all the documents in order to write about, or in …

Poesía Amorosa De Una Erudita Del Xvii: Traducción Y Creación En El Pastor Fido De Isabel Correa, Almudena Vidorreta Jan 2017

Poesía Amorosa De Una Erudita Del Xvii: Traducción Y Creación En El Pastor Fido De Isabel Correa, Almudena Vidorreta

Publications and Research

Flora Tristan’S Plural Identities In "Peregrinaciones De Una Paria": Challenging And Reproducing Existing Power Structures, Nancy Tille-Victorica Jan 2017

Flora Tristan’S Plural Identities In "Peregrinaciones De Una Paria": Challenging And Reproducing Existing Power Structures, Nancy Tille-Victorica

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

This article analyses the ways in which Franco-Peruvian author Flora Tristan crosses the border of her plural identities in her famous travel book Peregrinaciones de una paria (1837). It especially looks at how she performs as a male in certain situations and how these are generally associated with her French identity. It also considers her identification as a woman and how it is linked to her Peruvian identity. These examinations reveal how Tristan actually redefines herself as a pariah and how her definition differs from that of outcast imposed on her in France prior to her departure for Peru.

MaríA De Zayas And The Art Of Breaking Free, Erin Cygan Jan 2017

MaríA De Zayas And The Art Of Breaking Free, Erin Cygan

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

This paper analyzes a short story by the 17th-century Spanish author María de Zayas. In Her Lover’s Slave, Zayas’s protagonist Isabel Fajardo is raped and decides to transform into a Moorish slave woman in order to pursue her rapist throughout the Mediterranean and avenge her honor. I examine the effect of this transformation on Isabel, a Christian noblewoman who is subject to the restrictive honor code of early modern Spain, as well as the effect on her Spanish audience. I argue that Isabel’s tale sends didactic messages to early modern and contemporary readers, messages that promote solidarity among …

Franco, Pedro Y El Género, Kaleigh E. Hoffman Jan 2017

Franco, Pedro Y El Género, Kaleigh E. Hoffman

Honors Theses

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

This article calls attention to the recent appearance of Don Quixote in the "real world" of economics, business management, and leadership development as a new, but mostly unnoticed chapter in the reading history of Cervantes's work. Providing an overview of this relatively new phenomenon, the article focuses on the pervasive influence of an unlikely defender of the "romantic approach": Stanford Graduate School of Business professor James March, an acclaimed intellectual and founding member of the revolutionary School of Behavioral Economics, whose original use of Don Quixote in leadership studies was ironically meant to provide a humanist antidote to the spread …

Narrar Lo Inenarrable: Trauma, Memoria Y Dictadura En Argentina, Gloria Yaneth Losada Jan 2017

Narrar Lo Inenarrable: Trauma, Memoria Y Dictadura En Argentina, Gloria Yaneth Losada

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines new ways to think about postdictatorial memory, subjectivity, and cultural production. I explore memory discourses after the most recent military dictatorship in Argentina, compiled in three novels: El fin de la historia by Liliana Heker, La casa de los conejos by Laura Alcoba, and Diario de una princesa Montonera -110% verdad- by Mariana Eva Perez. My research concentrates on the possibility of postdictatorial cultural production being a constantly transforming space, in which the meaning of the dictatorial past is actively produced. Drawing from interdisciplinary theoretical considerations, I examine the relationship between memory and cultural production in postdictatorship …

Mapa Dibujado Por Un Espía: Crónica Autobiográfica Y Poética De La Memoria, Isabel Alvarez-Borland

Spanish Department Faculty Scholarship

Mapa dibujado por un espía, a memoir by Guillermo Cabrera Infante ( published in 2013 by his widow Miriam Cabrera Infante), describes the experience of not being able to leave Cuba during four months, period in which the author had returned to his country in order to attend the funeral of his mother, Zoila Infante in 1965. My reading examines this memoir in its autobiographical dimension and seeks to illuminate the presence in this work of several voices that appear in tension with one another. My study focuses on these voices as it pays attention in particular to the …
