Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour Jul 2024

Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour

Languages and Cultures Publications

The purpose of this study is to analyze Basil Bunting's literary translation. It turns to the theories of translation by Steiner, Benjamin, and Eco, among others, to study Bunting’s translation of Rūdhakī’s ‘Dandaniyyeh’ poem, a 10th century qaṣīdah replete with mesmerizing musicality and with a form galvanized in its originating language, time, and locale. A deep contrastive analysis of its translation into English by the poet, Bunting, shows the difficulties that can arise from literal translations of classical Persian poetry.

Alianzas Antimodernas: Estudios Del Cine Español Del Proceso 15m, Pedro Cabello Del Moral Jun 2024

Alianzas Antimodernas: Estudios Del Cine Español Del Proceso 15m, Pedro Cabello Del Moral

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Anti-Modern Alliances: Studies of Spanish Cinema of the 15M Process mobilizes decolonial theory to shed new light upon the politics of the 15M (or Indignados) movement and its visual culture. It tackles anti-modern critiques as embodied in film characters who have been traditionally relegated to the margins of modernity’s grand narratives. The research corpus encompasses a diverse body of works –documentaries, fiction films, activist video essays and their paratexts, which I critically interrogate in dialogue with contemporary feminist, anti-racist, decolonial, anti-neoliberal and anti-ableist debates. Thus, the dissertation examines the methods by which audiovisual works from the past ten years have …

El Eslabón Perdido De La Pedagogía Jesuita, Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano May 2024

El Eslabón Perdido De La Pedagogía Jesuita, Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone May 2024

Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper analyzes food as a memory device in the novel Doña Flor y sus dos maridos by the Brazilian author Jorge Amado. Set in San Salvador du Bahía in northern Brazil, the novel follows Doña Flor after her husband Vadinho dies. Food and drink – considered here as folkloric forms – play a central role not only in her exploration of memories of her husband but also in the broader bahiana society with its mix of different ethnicities (African, indigenous, European). Drawing on Felix Coluccio’s and Dan Ben-Amos notions of folklore and literature and Arjun Appadurai’s exploration of the …

Marvelous Ordinariness: Re-Engaging With Realism’S Social Function, Miranda Ochoa Natera May 2024

Marvelous Ordinariness: Re-Engaging With Realism’S Social Function, Miranda Ochoa Natera

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

Against Romanticism, European literary realism of the 19th century aimed to provide an objective representation of reality through mimesis that could capture the truth in an objective way. Yet, its positivist approach severely narrowed down the complexity of truth, reality, and the mundane by wrongfully drawing the universal from the particular. A new way of engaging with realist literature from any time period, called Marvelous Ordinariness, rearranges this triad in ways that expand our understanding of our own and other realities portrayed. Using Alejo Carpentier’s description of “lo real maravilloso,” Marvelous Ordinariness unfolds in three layers that resemble Carl Jung’s …

Senior Theses and Projects

This paper explores the use of psychodrama as a technique in Argeninian theater by Eduardo Pavlovksy and Griselda Gambaro, as well as interpretations of the following plays through a psychoanalytical lens: El campo (1967) y La malasangre (1982) de Gambaro y El señor Galíndez (1972) y Telarañas (1976) de Pavlovsky. Each of these plays was written during a dark period of Argentine history between the years 1966-1983 during which a series of military regimes took power of the country, eventually leading to the Dirty War. The deaths and disappearances of over 30,000 individuals who spoke against the government forever changed …

La Otra Humanizada Subversion In The Narrative Of Denise Phé-Funchal, Lucila Gamero De Medina, And Gabriela Damián Miravete, Michele Haeberlin

Theses and Dissertations

This analysis will focus on the impact of patriarchal ideals on gender expectations and roles in Central America and Mexico, through a sample of narrative texts by women authors. The experience of gender is always connected to national identity and the planning of social roles. Within the imagined community of a nation the valuation of female bodies creates a specific role for them in society. Why is there violence against the female body and what does this violence have to do with the concepts of social roles and subversive womanhood? With this information, this investigation will explore the creation of …

"And Then There Were None:" The Silencing And Censorship Of Translated Works Under Francisco Franco, Avery Austin May 2024

"And Then There Were None:" The Silencing And Censorship Of Translated Works Under Francisco Franco, Avery Austin

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

We tend to live under the assumption that translations will always attempt to be faithful to their original texts, blindly believing in the infallibility of the translator. However, in doing so, we ignore how translation can be used to take advantage of the reader – how can one know that a change has occurred in a translated work if they have no knowledge of the text’s original language? This paper studies the power dynamics of translation, and how it can be used as a tool to aid censorship. By focusing on translated literary works under the Franco regime, this work …

Colonialism And Collective Trauma: The Development And Deterioration Of Macondo, Kaitlyn Tibbetts Apr 2024

Colonialism And Collective Trauma: The Development And Deterioration Of Macondo, Kaitlyn Tibbetts

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Through his works Leaf Storm and One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez explores the development and deterioration of the fictional town of Macondo to illuminate how colonialism infiltrated Latin America, causing detrimental damage to the integrity of its community. Márquez accomplishes this by illustrating the industrialization of Macondo, which embodies colonialism’s detrimental influence. These effects are undeniably ongoing, as seen through the domination of neo-colonialism in Macondo. In both texts, this neo-colonialism is primarily depicted through the arrival of the American banana industry in Macondo. In this, Márquez mirrors Latin American history by alluding to the Boston-based …

A New Nature Is Coming. We Will Be Repossessed, And The Spectres Of The Post-Natural Will Take The World. Predictions Of A New Symbiotic Earth In "Fafner" (2018) By Daniel Perez Navarro, Miguel Angel Albújar-Escuredo

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

This paper engages in the debates about decentralizing the role of men in the world we live in. Byproducts of this new mindset are concepts such as the “Posthuman” (Braidotti 2012); the status of “Holobiont” (Haraway 2016), and the experiencing of a new “Coexistence” with the non-human (Morton 2018). I suggest the novel Fafner (2018) as a perfect sample of this intellectual debate from an artistic and fictional view. Using concepts from diverse fields of thinking and applying them to literary analysis, this paper will review the in-depth transformation of nature portrayed by Fafner’s narration. Additionally, it will accomplish …

The Arabic Influence On The Spanish Language: Sociocultural Mechanisms Of Language Change Under Islamic Rule In The Iberian Peninsula, Reagan Borland Apr 2024

The Arabic Influence On The Spanish Language: Sociocultural Mechanisms Of Language Change Under Islamic Rule In The Iberian Peninsula, Reagan Borland

Senior Theses

After Latin, which makes up about 75-80% of the Spanish lexicon (Comparán Rizo, 2006, p. 17), Arabic is the most important linguistic contributor to the branch of Romance languages that would come to be known as Spanish or Castellano (Castilian), surpassing Germanic influence and that of other contributors such as French and Celtic languages. The broad range of Arabisms found in Spanish can be attributed to certain cultural and social changes that took place under Arab-Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula between 711 and 1492 and during the period following the so-called “Reconquista” of Spain by the Christian kingdoms to …

El Público De Federico García Lorca A La Luz De María Zambrano, Giovanny Salas Torres Apr 2024

El Público De Federico García Lorca A La Luz De María Zambrano, Giovanny Salas Torres

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Research Honors

In this research project, I am investigating the differences in the US education system in regard to Spanish bilingual education. This research is rooted in the political and policy debate surrounding Dual Language Programs and Transitional Bilingual Programs, which blossomed during the Reagan administration in the 1980’s. More specifically, I am researching the differences between these two programs and their individual cognitive benefits. In order to examine these differences, I will compare them using two different populations: Bloomington, IL and Saint Charles, IL. Both of these areas have different populations as well as different offerings of bilingual support and education. …

What Would It Take To Prepare Critical Spanish Heritage Language (Shl) Instructors?, Gabrielle Yocupicio Feb 2024

What Would It Take To Prepare Critical Spanish Heritage Language (Shl) Instructors?, Gabrielle Yocupicio

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language

In the last decade, prominent scholars (Beaudrie & Loza, 2021; Leeman & Serafini, 2016; Martinez, 2016; Parra, 2016) have called for the adoption of critical language awareness (CLA) as a primary framework for carrying out Spanish heritage language (SHL) instructional goals. Thus, research on preparing SHL instructors for critical teaching continues to necessitate the opinions and advice of current practitioners engaging in CLA efforts. This presentation hopes to contribute to this research by honing into the recommendations of five educators working in a well-established SHL program at a U.S. Southwest university. Drawing from my dissertation, I employed qualitative semi-structured interviews …

Generational language wounds are the result of language loss caused by trauma, discrimination, or deficit narrative. Heritage language instructors can learn to identify manifestations of these wounds and help their students heal so they can have a healthy relationship with their language and culture.
