Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour
Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour
Languages and Cultures Publications
The purpose of this study is to analyze Basil Bunting's literary translation. It turns to the theories of translation by Steiner, Benjamin, and Eco, among others, to study Bunting’s translation of Rūdhakī’s ‘Dandaniyyeh’ poem, a 10th century qaṣīdah replete with mesmerizing musicality and with a form galvanized in its originating language, time, and locale. A deep contrastive analysis of its translation into English by the poet, Bunting, shows the difficulties that can arise from literal translations of classical Persian poetry.

Interminables Encrucijadas: El Dilema Ético En Tomás Nevinson, Isabel Cuñado
Interminables Encrucijadas: El Dilema Ético En Tomás Nevinson, Isabel Cuñado
Faculty Journal Articles

Environmental Loss, Displacement, And Anxiety In Portugal: Analyzing News Articles To Differentiate Manifestations Of Environmental Distress, Robin Greene
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Expressions of environmental distress can take different forms, with different symptoms, causes, and treatments. Existing literature generally identifies three primary categories of environmental distress responses: environmental grief, solastalgia, and eco-anxiety. This paper explores these distinctions and identifies words typically associated with each category in Portuguese news articles using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). LDA is a Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique that groups words into topics and identifies connections between those words based on how often those words appear together in sequences. This paper uses a modified LDA algorithm called GuidedLDA to identify additional keywords within topics defined by a list …

Archivo Y Memoria: Una Mirada A Tres Historias De Mujeres Esclavizadas En El Virreinato De La Nueva Granada De Finales Del Siglo Xviii, Luisa Carolina Julio Gomez
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Colonial documents preserve information that allows us to know the local Andean history of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. These manuscripts reveal forms of violence that shaped the subjectivities of the time and the resistance of oppressed women. This dissertation examines the effects of slavery and the response of three enslaved women to that colonial violence. This analysis seeks to better understand and make visible how the intersection between racism and patriarchy impacted the lives of three racialized women in the colonial context.
This dissertation focuses on the experiences, struggles, and resistance of three women present in the manuscripts consigned …

Code-Switching Among Heritage Spanish Speakers: Attitudes, Practices, And Pedagogical Implications, Farah Ali
Code-Switching Among Heritage Spanish Speakers: Attitudes, Practices, And Pedagogical Implications, Farah Ali
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Code-switching is perhaps one of the most salient linguistic practices among Spanish-English bilinguals in the U.S., and therefore widely investigated. (Bailey 2000; Kern 2019; Lipski 2014). While code-switching is typically associated with bilinguals who are highly proficient in two languages (Balukas & Koops 2014; Benevento & Dietrich 2015; Poplack 1980; Rangel et al. 2015), it is crucial to also highlight the code-switching practices of bilinguals who may have unequal levels of proficiency in each language, such as in the case of some heritage language (HL) learners. The present study examines socio-pragmatic functions of code-switching among heritage learners of Spanish. Using …

Juan Crow: A Discriminatory Past With Contemporary Consequences Against Mexican Americans, Alicia Delaney
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This paper will focus on the past and contemporary systemic discrimination of the Mexican and Mexican American communities in Texas and California. I will first discuss how, despite being considered citizens at the federal level since the enactment Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexicans and their descendants were subject to de facto segregation policies, discriminatory economic and social practices at the local and State levels, and numerous acts of violence. They were racialized as “others” in terms of language, customs, and supposed inferior morality. In addition, I will explain the numerous factors that have, in the past and present, …

Remember The Hand: Manuscription In Early Medieval Iberia, Catherine Brown
Remember The Hand: Manuscription In Early Medieval Iberia, Catherine Brown
Medieval Studies
Remember the Hand studies a body of articulate manuscript books from the Christian monasteries of northern Iberia in the tenth and eleventh centuries. These exceptional, richly illuminated codices have in common an urgent sense of scribal presence—scribes name themselves, describe themselves, even paint their own portraits. While marginal notes, even biographical ones, are a common feature of medieval manuscripts, rarely do scribes make themselves so fully known. These writers address the reader directly, asking for prayers of intercession and sharing of themselves. They ask the reader to join them in not only acknowledging the labor of writing but also in …
El Lenguaje Del Autismo: Una Evaluación De La Terminología Autista En Dos Libros Españoles (The Language Of Autism: An Evaluation Of The Autistic Terminology Used In Two Spanish Books), Catherine Droesch
Honors Projects

An Endless Cycle: Borges And The Reciprocal Nature Of Artistic Inspiration And Expression, Alessandro Tomasi
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This project will focus on an analysis of Jorge Luis Borges' ideas regarding artistic creation, expression, inspiration and thought through several of his writings- specifically 'Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote', 'Kafka y sus precursores' and 'Las ruinas circulares'. Using a framework constructed by this analysis, the paper will then delve into works that have heavily influenced Borges himself and then close with works that in turn were inspired by Borges. Among his inspirations are the works of Dante Alighieri and Franz Kafka, and some that were inspired by him include those of Umberto Eco and Julio Cortázar. Thus, the paper …

"You Have To Look At Both Sides": Percepticide And Memory In Argentina's Parque De La Memoria, Lily Berver
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This paper explores the complex relationship between perspective and percepticide in how we remember Argentina’s last dictatorship (1976-1983). I use existing literature about the dictatorship and my experience studying abroad in Argentina to reflect on the problem of “looking at both sides,” as it legitimizes the violence of the dictatorship and minimizes the significance of state terror. Considering the Parque de la Memoria (Memory Park) in Buenos Aires as a case study, I analyze three aspects of the park — the sculpture “Pensar es un hecho revolucionario,” the Monumento a las Víctimas del Terrorismo de Estado (Monument to the Victims …

This article analyzes the construction of TopoRadio (toporadio.org), an interactive map that showcases publications and archives about Spanish-language radio in the U.S. The map aims to promote a more inclusive and comprehensive representation of U.S. radio history by improving the visibility of contributions from Latinx broadcasters. The article addresses how map-making historically suppressed Spanish-language radio programs and proposes using critical cartography as a framework for mapping back this history. The technical elements of TopoRadio, including publication selection criteria, metadata design, geocoding process, and the appraisal of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, are described to provide scholars with a reproducible method …

Deus Ex Machina: Contemporary Argentina's Literature Of Infrastructure, D. Bret Leraul
Faculty Journal Articles
This article traces the growth of representations of literary infrastructure in Argentinean literature parallel to the rise of global finance capital and the successive price and debt crises it has visited upon the Argentinean economy since the restoration of liberal democracy in 1983. I argue that as Argentina’s robust mid-century literary institution has declined, the concrete organizations that constitute its infrastructure—for example publishing houses, educational institutions, cultural bureaucracies—become fodder for literary fiction. In short, literature represents its own infrastructure when that infrastructure comes to present a problem. My claim rests at once on the logics of the literary institution and …

Characterization And The Aesthetic Representation Of Violence In The Graphic Novel "Esperaré Siempre Tu Regreso", By Jordi Peidro, Deirdre Kelly
Books/Book Chapters
The graphic novel, Esperaré siempre tu regreso (2016, Desfiladero Ediciones) by the author and illustrator, Jordi Peidro (Alcoy, 1965), is a biographical and historical text that centres on the life in exile of Francisco Aura Boronat (or Paco Aura, Alcoy, 1918-2018), a Spanish communist and Republican who survived the horrors of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. Drawing on comics studies and memory studies, the analysis will discuss how Peidro navigates ethical and aesthetic issues when representing traumatic and violent memories related to the Spanish experience of Civil War, exile and deportation to a Nazi concentration camp. Firstly, it will …
