The Social Determinants Of Health And Genocide: Towards A Public Health Integrated Framework Of Genocide And Mass Violence, Sian Persad, Cheng Xu Nov 2023

The Social Determinants Of Health And Genocide: Towards A Public Health Integrated Framework Of Genocide And Mass Violence, Sian Persad, Cheng Xu

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This paper makes a normative argument about transformations of public health as a necessary condition required in any transitional justice process. We seek to bridge the gap between the fields of genocide and public health to understand the recursive relationship between genocide and the social determinants of health. We show that structures and institutions established during genocide create enduring impacts on the public health outcomes of victim and survivor groups even after the ousting of the original perpetrators. Our comparative analysis of the Rwandan Genocide and the colonial genocide of Indigenous communities in Canada surveys the available public health literature …

Islands Of Suppression: Japanese Internment In Hawaii Vs. West Coast 1941-1945, Carson Brown '24 Nov 2023

Islands Of Suppression: Japanese Internment In Hawaii Vs. West Coast 1941-1945, Carson Brown '24

Senior Research Symposium

The United States' involvement in World War II resulted in the internment and relocation of people of Japanese descent on the home front. The Territory of Hawaii was comprised of over a hundred thousand Japanese residents, who were also slated to be relocated. By exploring the differences between the military generals placed in charge of the West Coast (General John L. DeWitt) and the Territory of Hawaii (General Delos C. Emmons), the treatment of the ethnic Japanese in the areas shows a broader context of morals and racial profiling in the United States.

Disney, Slavery, And Education: How The Conversation Of Racial History Influenced The Depiction Of Uncomfortable Historical Realities, Annika Garwood '24

Senior Research Symposium

Looking to theme parks in the 1990s in Virginia, one can see the attempt to implement racial history in the conversation of everyday life. Coupled with changing educational standards, there was an obvious attempt to acknowledge the dark parts of America’s past. However, theme parks and the education department faced pushback when that reality was too real and uncomfortable for people to want to talk about.

From there, the discussion will be focused on explaining the structure …

Crisis In The Heart Of Darkness: Navigating The Complexities Of The Congo Crisis 1960-1961, Jaxon Stutz '24

Senior Research Symposium

The Congo, placed in the heart of Africa, is filled with landscapes that are Often compared to descriptions of heaven. A country approximately the size of Western Europe with an estimated $24 trillion worth of minerals buried deep within the heart of darkness. The Congo could be the jewel of Africa, if not one of the most prosperous countries in the world. But a further gaze underneath the lush canopies of the Congolese jungle would find nothing but the ghosts of millions of Congolese victims to the Europeans and Americans. Whose greed and savagery turned this once thought of paradise …

The Chicago Fire Of 1871: Recovery And Reinforcement Of Class Divisions, Thomas Fay '24 Nov 2023

The Chicago Fire Of 1871: Recovery And Reinforcement Of Class Divisions, Thomas Fay '24

Senior Research Symposium

The Chicago Fire of 1871 demonstrated the resiliency of one of the United States' largest city. Labeled as one of the most devastating disasters to strike an urban area in American history, the aftermath and recovery efforts proved to be critical in keeping Chicago on the map as an economic hub. Often left out of the documented history on the fire is how class divisions were shaped and reinforced through the redevelopment of neighborhoods and distribution of relief in the resurrection period. This project was aimed to root out how class divisions and wealth gaps were reinforced in Chicago considering …

License To Spill: Credentialing In 20th Century Journalism Education, Nate Floyd Nov 2023

License To Spill: Credentialing In 20th Century Journalism Education, Nate Floyd

Journal of 20th Century Media History

This study begins with a war of words between industry insiders and journalism educators in 1947 regarding the establishment of the American Council on Education for Journalism (ACEJ). Although the accrediting agency for journalism education was still a year away from announcing its first list of accredited programs, discussions surrounding how to elevate the status of journalism and regulate entry into the profession had been ongoing since at least 1923, involving metropolitan newspaper editors and journalism educators. This study explores a plan formulated during the interwar period, involving metropolitan newspaper editors affiliated with the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) …

“America’S Nervous Breakdown”: Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Popular Psychology, And The Demise Of The Housewife In The 1970s, Kate L. Flach

Journal of 20th Century Media History

In 1976, soap opera satire Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (MH, MH) debuted and reached an estimated 55 million households. Produced by Norman Lear, the central storyline developed during the first season involved the mental breakdown of Mary Hartman (Louise Lasser), a typical consumer housewife who Lear claimed metaphorically represented the United States. Portraying a discontent housewife with mental illness as a proxy for the nation reflects how ubiquitous popular psychology became in explaining American anxieties over the transformations of the family and politics. An analysis of tape-recorded writers meetings reveals that the show’s creators pulled from contemporary books, theories, and …

Journal of 20th Century Media History

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Journal of 20th Century Media History.
