The Growth Of Federal Authority, 1929-40, Terry Irving Jan 2014

The Growth Of Federal Authority, 1929-40, Terry Irving

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

This chapter covers the period of economic crisis in which Labor returns to government at the national level, splits and loses office, and rebuilds its strength in a long process of asserting the authority of the Federal Parliamentary Party against the state branches and the factions they often spawned. It begins with Scullin's victory and ends with the new leader, Curtin, poised to make Labor the party of government in another moment of national crisis.

The Year Of Sport And Society In Review, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Normally I don't do a year in review piece although I think I did review the year in Sport and Society one time. I will do it because of the fact that one event so dominated American consciousness this past year that it will make this calendar year a very memorable and special one.

Martin Bucer And The Church Fathers In The Cologne Reformation, Amy Nelson Burnett Dec 2001

Martin Bucer And The Church Fathers In The Cologne Reformation, Amy Nelson Burnett

Faculty Publications, Department of History

Martin Bucer’s theology is perhaps the most difficult of all the major reformers to characterize because of its evolving nature. Although there are certainly fundamental features that remained constant through his career, what makes Bucer so unusual and so fascinating is the evolution of his thought as he worked out the implications of those fundamental beliefs and their specific applications over his years of experience as pastor, teacher and church organizer.

There are times when I think that the entire world of sport was put on this earth to amuse me with unending scenes from the theater of the absurd. The last several days brought repeated waves of this feeling.

Review Of Ruth Ruth Mackay And Sir John Elliott, The Limits Of Royal Authority: Resistance And Obedience In Seventeenth‐Century Castile, Antonio Feros Dec 2001

Review Of Ruth Ruth Mackay And Sir John Elliott, The Limits Of Royal Authority: Resistance And Obedience In Seventeenth‐Century Castile, Antonio Feros

Departmental Papers (History)

During the 1640s, many Spaniards and Europeans believed that something was going terribly wrong in the Spanish monarchy. Signs of general discontent were widespread, as demonstrated by insurgent political movements in Catalonia (1640), Portugal (1640), and Naples (1647–48). In addition, between roughly 1620 and 1650 the Spanish monarchy was embroiled in an endless and debilitating “global war,” with its armies battling across Europe, America, and Asia. Many of these tensions and conflicts were linked to the attempts of the Spanish government, led by Philip IV (1621–1665) and his favorite, and prime minister, the Count-Duke of Olivares, to introduce ...

Review: 'Evangelizing The Chosen People: Missions To The Jews In America, 1880–2000', William Vance Trollinger Dec 2001

Review: 'Evangelizing The Chosen People: Missions To The Jews In America, 1880–2000', William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

As bizarre as all this may seem to the uninitiated, Yaakov Ariel makes clear in Evangelizing the Chosen People that the aforementioned event is simply part of the latest chapter in an ongoing story within American religious history. Going where no scholar has gone before, Ariel recounts the history of Protestant missions to the Jews in the United States. Making good use of missions’ organization records and the writings of Jewish converts to Christianity, Ariel divides his narrative into three parts: evangelizing Jewish immigrants (1880–1920); evangelizing the children of Jewish immigrants (1920–1965); and evangelizing Jewish Baby Boomers (1965 ...

Nonviolent Voices: Peace Churches Make A Witness, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

It is not a propitious time to b a pacifist in the United States. Polls inchcat that over 90 percent of Americans continue to support the military campaign in Afghanistan. Indi cations of such support are verywb re, as are the warnings- like the ubiquitous and vaguely threatening "Americans Unite" bump r stickers-that this time of national crisis is not the time for dissent. Not only are there very few voices in the mainstream media expressing doubts about the wisdom of the current military operation, but a number of commentators have waxed apoplectic over any possibility that there may be ...

Gerechtigkeit Ohne Gewerkschaft Und Betriebsrat? Konfliktschlichtung In Gewerkschaftsfreien Betrieben In Den Usa, Alexander Colvin Dec 2001

Gerechtigkeit Ohne Gewerkschaft Und Betriebsrat? Konfliktschlichtung In Gewerkschaftsfreien Betrieben In Den Usa, Alexander Colvin

Articles and Chapters
