Sexual Politics And Subversion: Feminist Utopia As Praxis, Jennifer Sue Boyers
Dissertations
Literary studies meets up with sociology as feminist utopian fiction Is examined for what sociologist Dorothy Smith (1990) labels normal narrative and counter-narrative articulations of gendered structures of power. The method of analytical Induction Is used both In the choosing of the four novels for study and the resulting textual analysis. Ursula Le Guln's The dispossessed (1974), Marge Plercy's Woman on the edge of time (1976), Suzy McKee Chamas's Motherllnes (1978), and Sally Miller Gearhart's The wandereround (1979) are examined for their constructions of dystopian normal narratives, as well as for their reconstructions of subversive utopian counter-narratives, both articulating gendered …
Crossing Boundaries: Land And Sea In Jane Austen's 'Persuasion', Laura Vorachek
Crossing Boundaries: Land And Sea In Jane Austen's 'Persuasion', Laura Vorachek
English Faculty Publications
Jane Austen suggests in Persuasion the pressures that the increased mobility of the middle class placed on the established aristocratic society in her time. Anne Elliot especially brings to light the inherited assumptions of her society. She can marry within her social rank (Mr. Elliot or Charles Musgrove) or marry below her (Wentworth at age 23), but either is a choice within the limits established by her society. One owns land or one does not. But when Wentworth returns a man of name and wealth, he is not a member of the landed gentry nor is he below Anne in …

Le "Devenir Féminin" Dans La Sociéte Moderne Occidentale À Travers Les Deux Romans De Virginie Despentes, Nadia Louar
Dissertations and Theses

"In World Literature 390, I want to examine from a literary perspective medicine and medical discourse. How do authors use metaphors of sickness and health, illness and cure, disease and well-being in their literature? How in turn do these literary and rhetorical metaphors affect everyday understandings of these basic concepts?"

Buchi Emecheta : A Novelist's Image Of Nigerian Women, Kirstin Lynne Ellsworth
Buchi Emecheta : A Novelist's Image Of Nigerian Women, Kirstin Lynne Ellsworth
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Nigerian novelist Buchi Emecheta writes about the lives of twentieth century Nigerian women. Living during the post-World War II decades of British colonialism, and the subsequent move towards Nigerian Independence in the 1950s, Emecheta's women are affected by some of the most dramatic social and cultural changes in their country's history. Colonialism brings with it abrupt changes in the degree of political power held by Nigerians in their own country, and fosters the urbanization and expansion of market centers like Lagos, based on exploitative systems of raw material extraction for the colonial power. Imposing an increasingly western sensibility on Nigeria, …
