Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center
Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center
Economics and Finance
In early 2002 the New England Environmental Finance Center hosted a series of roundtable discussions among municipal officials, residential developers, land trust representatives, and others about "Innovative Approaches to Land Conservation and Smart Growth". Among our observations was that for many of the over 20 conservation/development partnerships we discussed in the series, creation and maintenance of trust was central to success or failure of various stages of the partnership. This suggested a link between creation of trust and financial return for traditionally opposed project partners.
To further examine this matter, we interviewed 11 round table participants and asked questions about …
Inner-Urban Sustainability: A Case Study Of The South Brisbane Peninsula, Daniel O'Hare
Inner-Urban Sustainability: A Case Study Of The South Brisbane Peninsula, Daniel O'Hare
Daniel O'Hare
The combination of elements and conditions in inner-urban areas may be argued to constitute established patterns of urban sustainability. This paper develops the argument through a case study of the South Brisbane peninsula, one of Queensland’s oldest and densest inner-urban areas. For the purposes of the paper, urban sustainability is defined in the context of urban design and development. This definition highlights the interrelationship between urban form and structure, and the social and economic life of the city. The paper argues that South Brisbane demonstrates significant characteristics of ‘triple bottom line’ environmental, social and economic sustainability in a subtropical inner-urban …
Sustainable Economies In Master Planned Communities, P. Wales
Sustainable Economies In Master Planned Communities, P. Wales
Ned Wales
The intent of this paper is to discuss the principles for forming industrial ecologies in master planned communities. There is a growing need for both land developers; government agencies and the construction industry to encourage a holistic approach toward newly constructed communities rather than creating bedroom dormitories where typically greater reliance on resources and emissions of green house gases occurs. The paper proposes a framework to understand how all of the aspects of sustainable local economies can compete in current global economic dynamics, which can over ride local economic potential.
It is evident as a society we need to make …
Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe
Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe
Reports
We are currently living through an era where we can, and need to, create exciting new possibilities in the way we think about, plan, design and build new places and spaces for working and living. At the same time, two irresistible forces – change and complexity – face decision-makers charged with framing and executing future policy and practice for the built and human environment. This paper generally argues the case for employing a ‘prospective’ process through scenario thinking for strategic planning and management in the urban arena. It does not attempt to identify or explore the advances made in planning …

Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service
Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service
Legislation
Sprawl is neither the ordained nor the inevitable outcome upon the New England landscape. A coordinated response to sprawl by the public and private sectors is possible, and could dramatically improve land use patterns and reduce the cost of local government. For the New England states, such a response would include, among other elements, legislation to eliminate existing gaps in the land use laws of each state – gaps that presently encourage or sanction sprawling development. It would also include incentives for municipalities to think beyond their borders and to act with greater efficiency and effect. It is the purpose …

Measuring The Effectiveness Of Downtown Revitalization Strategies, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
Downtowns, the traditional business centers of our communities, have survived many changes throughout the last century. Once thriving retail and civic centers, they were adversely affected by changes in mobility, retail patterns and shopping habits. Since the 1960's downtowns have seen serious competition from suburban shopping centers, malls, strip commercial areas, major discount centers and on-line and catalogue sales. Despite these changes, downtowns still play a central role in our cities today. They are the centers of our urbanized areas and still reflect the economic core and image of our cities. A healthy downtown is often synonymous with a healthy …

Architecture Thesis Prep
"The city is enhanced by architecture form which participates in the urban fabric as a means of connection, therefore promoting the formation of community... The intent is to propose developemnt for portions of the Central Artery Master Plan in Boston, Massachusetts. The city is currently in the process of relocating a major infrastructural element from its present location above grade to a tunnel beneath the city. Demolition of the exiting central artery offers the city an opportunity to infill much of the land and restore surface level streets reconnecting the east sire of the interstate to the downtown area...

Smart Growth And Land Acquisition Priorities: A Cursory Review, New England Environmental Finance Center
Smart Growth And Land Acquisition Priorities: A Cursory Review, New England Environmental Finance Center
Smart Growth
It is well-known and generally accepted that all undeveloped land in New England cannot forever be protected from development; nor would this be a desirable goal, as continued economic development and population growth are near certainties. For these and other reasons, private land trusts and government agencies generally use explicit criteria to prioritize their land acquisition activities and prospects.

The Future Of Office Property, Janine Irons, Lynne Armitage

The following paper considers the question, where to office property? In doing so, it focuses, in the first instance, on identifying and describing a selection of key forces for change present within the contemporary operating environment in which office property functions. Given the increasingly complex, dynamic and multi-faceted character of this environment, the paper seeks to identify only the primary forces for change, within the context of the future of office property. These core drivers of change have, for the purposes of this discussion, been characterised as including a range of economic, demographic and socio-cultural factors, together with developments in …

All of the information contained within this report has been cited and referenced to the best of my ability.

Mill Redevelopment In Rural Massachusetts Why There? And Not Here?, Center For Economic Development
Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
The purpose of this work is to identify both the obstacles and successful strategies of mill redevelopment in rural Massachusetts. While redevelopment has occurred in the historic industrial corridors of the Blackstone and Merrimac rivers, it has been largely absent in rural areas of Massachusetts. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to explain the forces that have acted as a catalyst for mill redevelopment in these areas, and examine why that has not occurred in rural New England. Our research has found that there are several obstacles that exist in rural areas that make mill redevelopment particularly challenging. However, …
