Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne Jan 1984

Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Ruby Mountains-East Humboldt Range, one of the interior mountain groups of the Basin and Range Province, lies about midway between the Wasatch Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. After Blackwelder’s description in his review of glaciation in the western mountains, Sharp mapped and named the deposits of the Lamoille and Angel Lake glaciations and correlated them with early and late Wisconsin deposits of the Great Lakes area. The refinement of relative dating (RD) methods, the availability of air photos and modem topographic maps, and new road cuts have aided the restudy of these alpine glacial deposits and the basis for …

Water Quality Evaluation Yatesville Lake Project: Volume 1, Stephen B. Sullivan, Edward G. Foree, John S. Tapp

KWRRI Research Reports

Point sources of pollution identified in the Blaine Creek watershed area consisted of oil and gas facility sources and mine related sources. A total of 493 point sources of pollution were inventoried which included 167 oil and gas related sources, 321 mine sediment structures, and 5 hollow fill groundwater seeps. The highest concentration of these point sources of pollution occurred in the south to southwest portion of the watershed in the area proximate to the Martha Field.

Adverse impacts to surface and groundwaters resulting from the 326 mine and groundwater point sources of pollution identified did not appear significant as …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen Jan 1984

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen

Masters Theses

"Many authors have encouraged the use of modular programming techniques in software development. In fact, there is almost total agreement within industrial and academic circles that modularity is a desirable feature of any software package. Unfortunately, the desirability of modular design is almost always voiced without support from experimental evidence.

This thesis consists of an experiment comparing the resource consumption of programmers based on the modularity practices employed during the design and programming phases of software development. The experiment tests the effectiveness of modularity in reducing psychological complexity of software.

The results of the research show that in some cases …

A Simple Method For Organizing Nearly Optimal Binary Search Trees, Joy L. Henderson Jan 1984

A Simple Method For Organizing Nearly Optimal Binary Search Trees, Joy L. Henderson

Masters Theses

"Improving the efficiency of retrieving information concerns users of computer systems involved in many applications- One way of addressing this concern is to organize a sorted sequence into a binary search tree. Knuth's Algorithm K is a bottom-up organization algorithm that always constructs a binary tree which minimizes average search time. However, the cost of executing Algorithm K is prohibitive for a large tree. The aim of this work is to find a less costly method of organizing sorted sequences into nearly-optimal binary search trees.

We present a top-down organization method which yields better average search times than top-down methods …

A Membrane-Organic Phase Oxidation Process For The Destruction Of Toxic Organics In Hazardous Wastewaters, Charles E. Hamrin Jr., Dibakar Bhattacharyya, William K. Glynn Jan 1984

A Membrane-Organic Phase Oxidation Process For The Destruction Of Toxic Organics In Hazardous Wastewaters, Charles E. Hamrin Jr., Dibakar Bhattacharyya, William K. Glynn

KWRRI Research Reports

The examination of the extraction/oxidation of organic solutes in a two phase oxidation process was undertaken to discern the important parameters and the process mechanism of this system. Several parameter were adjusted to measure their effect on the disappearance rate of each organic from the water phase. The water to PFD volume ratio proved to be the most sensitive parameter affecting the disappearance rate, although temperature was also significant. Comparison with one phase oxidation systems demonstrated that the water/PFD system improved on the reduction of organics from the water phase. B-napthol oxidation increased over 50% in a 2/6 water/PFD volume …

Measurement Of Low Vapor Pressures : A Kinetic Approach, Samuel Bernard Bliden Jan 1984

Measurement Of Low Vapor Pressures : A Kinetic Approach, Samuel Bernard Bliden

Dissertations and Theses

A kinetic model was applied to vapor pressure data obtained by a variable flow method. The vapor pressures of benzoic acid, naphthalene, benzophenone, and phenylhydrazine were measured at temperatures of 293K to 307K. The data are summarized in the data table on the following page. These data were obtained by passing air over a sample of the substance in a tube. The air stream was combusted, and a flame ionization detector was used to measure the mass of CO2 so obtained. Several different flow rates were used at each temperature with each substance.

High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis Jan 1984

High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis

Dissertations and Theses

A new preparative route to the only neutral chromium (V) oxide fluoride, chromium oxide trifluoride, has been accomplished by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride at high temperature. The chromium oxide trifluoride is produced as crystals which are suitable for single crystal studies. In reactions of chromium oxide trifluoride with alkali and alkaline metal fluorides in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, new chromium(V) oxide fluoride salts were obtained; these salts were not of high purity due to unknown problems. An attempt to prepare chromium oxide tetrafluoride by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride failed …

Variable Ultraviolet Emission In Sy Muscae, A. G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos Jan 1984

Variable Ultraviolet Emission In Sy Muscae, A. G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Following the enhancement in ultraviolet flux which we reported previously, we have continued monitoring the symbiotic variable SY Muscae with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (JUE). Over the course of one year, the prominent emission lines of N v, 0 v, C rv, He II appear to be gradually decreasing in absolute intensity. This appears to coincide with a steady decline in electron density in the emission line forming region, as suggested from the Sim] :\1892 and Cm] :\1909 intensity ratio. Our data is consistent with a sudden ejection event in which material expelled from the surface of a hot Teff …

Possibilities For Finite Grand Unification With N = 2 Supersymmetry, Asim Gangopadhyaya Dec 1983

Possibilities For Finite Grand Unification With N = 2 Supersymmetry, Asim Gangopadhyaya

Asim Gangopadhyaya

We study the prospects for constructing finite grand unified theories using softly broken N = 2 global supersymmetry. The requirement that the supersymmetry breaking scale be of order 103−104 GeV and that the mixing between the observed light fermions and the mirror fermions present in N = 2 theories be small («mW), make it difficult to construct finite grand unified theories based on a large class of simple groups with a realistic symmetry breaking pattern.

Topoi And Categories Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout Dec 1983

Topoi And Categories Of Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout

Lawrence N. Stout

Let H be a completely distributive lattice and hence a Heyting algebra. Goguen's category of fuzzy sets Set(H) Eytan's logos Fuz(H) and the topos of sheaves on H, Sh(H), are interconnected by pairs of adjoint functors between them. Each of the categories has a predicate calculus. These predicate calculi are related through the functors between the categories. Change of base lattice gives rise to several functors which preserve or reflect specific kinds of statements in the predicate calculi. This paper gives details of the categories, the predicate calculi attached to them, the functors between the categories, and the preservation properties …

Predicting The Proton Mass From Pi-Pi-Scattering Data, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein Dec 1983

Predicting The Proton Mass From Pi-Pi-Scattering Data, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

We relate experimental information on ππ scattering to tree-level effective chiral Lagrangians. The result is of a form similar to that used in Skyrme-type models of the proton, where the nucleons are described as topologically stable solitons of the chiral fields. In such models, one can express the proton mass in terms of measured scattering data, with the result Mp=880±300 MeV. We interpret this as a consistency test for the Skyrme models.

Nonergodicity In Path Integral Molecular Dynamics, Randall W. Hall, B. J. Berne Dec 1983

Nonergodicity In Path Integral Molecular Dynamics, Randall W. Hall, B. J. Berne

Randall W. Hall

Molecular dynamics can be used to evaluate the path integral representation of the density matrix. Implicit in this method is the assumption that the dynamical system is ergodic. It is shown here that this is not the case in many systems that are of interest. For example water or liquid neon can not be simulated by this method. Monte Carlo methods do not suffer from this weakness.

A Path Integral Monte Carlo Study Of Liquid Neon And The Quantum Effective Pair Potential, Devarajan Thirumalai, Randall W. Hall, Bruce J. Berne Dec 1983

A Path Integral Monte Carlo Study Of Liquid Neon And The Quantum Effective Pair Potential, Devarajan Thirumalai, Randall W. Hall, Bruce J. Berne

Randall W. Hall

The path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method is used to simulate liquid neon at T=40 K. It is shown that quantum effects are not negligible and that when the quantum effective pair potential is used in a classical molecular dynamics simulation the results obtained for the radial distribution function agrees with that predicted by a full path integral Monte Carlo simulation. The validity of this procedure is further shown by comparing the results obtained by this method to experimental measurements of liquid neon at T=35 K.

Maximal Functions Measuring Smoothness, Ronald A. Devore, Robert C. Sharpley Dec 1983

Maximal Functions Measuring Smoothness, Ronald A. Devore, Robert C. Sharpley

Robert Sharpley

Maximal functions which measure the smoothness of a function are introduced and studied from the point of view of their relationship to classical smoothness and their use in proving embedding theorems, extension theorems and various results on differentiation. New spaces of functions which generalize Sobolev spaces are introduced.
