There is no way to measure, on a global scale, the pollution dumped directly into the oceans, let alone all the tens of thousands of particulates, toxics, and gaseous substances are added each day to the atmosphere surrounding the New York Bight. The aim of this paper is to develop a user fee framework for the ocean dumping of municipal sludge. The northwest Tobacco Root Mountains are located on the boundary between two major tectonic provinces: the fold and thrust belt and the Rocky Mountain foreland. Deformation typical of the Rocky Mountain foreland is present in the form of two major northwest trending faults with associated folds. Paleozoic rocks were passively draped over at least one of the elevated Precambrian blocks. Foliation of the Precambrian rocks also appears to have been gently folded in the process.

Folds and thrusts occur within the Precambrian and Paleozoic rocks, on the westernmost flank of the range, appearing to follow the general trend of the …

A discharge of chromium-arsenic-copper laden wastewater occurred periodically from 1970 to 1980 at a wood preserving company located in southwestern Kalamazoo County, Michigan. As a result of this discharge, soils at the company site became contaminated with chromium, arsenic, and copper, and a local glacial outwash aquifer became contaminated with hexavalent chromium.

Soil samples collected from the discharge site were analyzed for clay-silt-sand-gravel content, organic matter, pH, clay mineralogy, and chromium, arsenic, copper, iron, and manganese content. The magmas which formed the northeastern Idaho batholith were contaminated with, or derived from, old crustal material as evidenced, from previous studies, by high whole-rock ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios, relatively high ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁶Pb ages, and Archean to Proterozoic upper intercept ages for batholithic zircons.

The old zircon component has been identified in this study by separating zircons into fractions based on size and morphology. Pb/U isotopic ratios are distributed on a chord with a lower concordia intercept intrusive age of 73.6+6 m.y. Bioclastic limestones, siltstones, and shales of the Point Pleasant Member were deposited in a shallow marine environment immediately below normal effective wave base. High-energy conditions produced by storms lowered the effective wave base and stirred the bottom sediments and redistributed them into bedforms. The different types of contacts, distribution of the faunal groups, and fabrics permit inferences regarding energy levels and assignment of samples to a mode of deposition. Vertical and lateral trends were then deduced. The Food and Drug Administration requires the disclosure of total unsaturation of commercial products as an indication of nutritional value. This unsaturation is a guide to the expected stability of food additives, such as edible oils and foods in which they are used. Unsaturation is typically evaluated as an iodine number, calculated for these additives based on their consumption of iodine through addition across the carbon-carbon double bonds. This titration method can typically take 45 minutes.

The Farmington gabbro-metagabbro complex is located along the western margin of the Charlotte belt of North Carolina. At least twp or more intrusions occur within the complex. The Farmington gabbroic intrusion is postmetamorphic and contains plagioclase, hornblende, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and olivine. Small amounts of magnetite, ilmenite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, hematite, hercynitic spinel, and biotite occur. Textures are hypidiomorphic granular to hypidiomorphic inequigranular. Four types of gabbroic rocks are present; hornblende gabbronite, olivine-hornblende gabbronorite, hornblende norite, and olivine-hornblende norite, with olivine-hornblende gabbronorite predominating. A limited range of progressive differentiation is indicated by restricted increases in FeO/(FeO +MgO) ratios for mafic silicates …

The rodents collected in the 1920's by the Marshall Field Expedition for the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, are systematically reviewed and placed within the stratigraphic framework established at the time of collection. One new genus (Proeuryzygomys) and three new species (Abracoma intermedias, Proeuryzygomys diminutiva, and Cayiodon (Lelongia) catamarcensis) are proposed. Two distinct faunas are recognized corresponding to the Huayquerian and Montehermosan Land Mammal Ages respectively. Several computer programs were developed to aid in character analysis.

This paper evaluates the complexity of resolution algorithms run in a parallel processing environment. An overview of parallel processing is presented along with a discussion of general resolution and resolution-refutation systems. An analysis of the complexity required by different control strategies to perform resolution programing is presented using both uniprocessor and multiprocessor systems.

The kinetics of the reaction of aquonickel (II) ion with N'N'-dimethlethylenediaminediacetic acid has been studied at 25°C and 0.1M iconic strength over a pH range of 6.0 to 9.3 using stopped-flow techniques. Formation reactions in all cases were first-order in Ni (II) and in ligand. The formation rate constant for the protonated and unprotonated species were evaluated and compared to their theoretical value. The rate-determining step is shown to be ring closure. A comparison of this system with other studies involving complexation of nickel (II) confirm the magnitude of the internal conjugate base effect and also shows a correlation between …

The reaction between copper(II) and N -(2-hydroxyethyl)iminodiacetatonickelate( II) (NiHEIDA) was studied between pH 4.0 and 5.6 over a 70 fold variation in copper concentration at an ionic strength of 1.25 and a temperature of 25° C. The reaction order in both NiHEIDA and Cu(U) is first. The reaction rate is pH sensitive and a hydrogen dependent pathway as w ell as copper dependent and copper and hydrogen independent pathways were found.

The use of integral equations to find radial distribution functions for computing thermodynamic properties is examined. The system considered is a simple classical fluid with interactions according to the Lennard-Jones (6-12) pair potential function. Two parametric integral equations (C and T) are studied in detail. Derivation of equation T and a power series solution are given. Computer solutions at several different temperatures, densities, and parameter values are obtained. Eight lithological units, documented from the analyses of 26 boreholes, comprise five laterally extensive horizons in the subsurface of Cape Henry, Virginia. Interpretations of the environments of deposition for those units are based upon textural and compositional features, fossils, thickness and distribution of strata, and previous reports about late Tertiary and Quaternary deposits in nearby areas. The incised, Pliocene Chowan River Formation (Unit H) underlies Pleistocene Units F and G which are concentrated in a buried river valley beneath Cape Henry. Biostratigraphic analysis of Late Miocene and Pliocene strata along the Piankatank River in eastern Virginia exposes a juxtaposition of the Eastover and Yorktown Formations. This structure is situated on a NE trending alignment of geological, geomorphic, and geophysical features which run from southern Virginia to northern Delaware. Tectonic jointing in isolated sandstone bodies and fracture controlled drainage patterns provide further evidence of post-middle Pliocene tectonism in the region. The lateral spacing of this structure from the Stafford and Brandywine fault zones and other linear features on the Coastal Plain strongly implies that a structural similarity exists between the Piankatank structure …

A method is developed to model the circulation of a barotropic, 8-plane ocean under an imposed steady wind stress. The model includes the effect of both horizontal and vertical friction along with nonlinear advection of vorticity. Implementing the method involves solving the unsteady quasigeostrophic potential-vorticity equation using a compact finite difference scheme (Gatski, Grosch, and Rose, 1982).

With the aid of the Aurelia Metamorphosis Test System, the acute or subtle morphological and behavioral effects of irradiation on the Norfolk Aurelia aurita were described and the sensitivity to X-irradiation of those organisms receiving thyroxine and those not receiving thyroxine was compared. Levels of radiation were 0 (control), 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 and 40,000 rads. A 12 meter core of lacustrine sediments from Cupola Pond, Ripley County, Missouri, Provides the first continuous record in the Ozark Plateaus Region of ecologic changes from full-glacial time to the present. From 17,100 to 15,350 yr B.P., forest communities were dominated by jack and/or red pine (northern Diploxylon Pinus) and spruce (Picea). A late-glacial, transitional forest of oak (Quercus), ash (Fraxinus), pine and spruce characterized the upland vegetation that occurred during a period of climatic amelioration between 15,350 and 12,300 yr B.P. This report describes the synthesis of naphthalene-2,3-dialdehyde, and an analytical method for determining its purity by thin layer chromatography. Subsequently, the dialdehyde was condensed with various cyclic ketones to generate a series of polymethylene bridged naphthotropones. It was found that planarity and aromaticity increase with the size of the methylene bridge, although, the bridge must contain six or more methylene groups for the latter to be true. The claim for aromaticity is supported by NMR and IR data, which indicates the positive charge for a perchlorate cation salt is delocalized over the naphthalene and tropone ring system. The Euler formula is used to establish a lower bound (gamma) for the genus of a block design. The kinetics of conformational interchange of 6,6-dicarbethoxydi-benzo- a,c - 1,3 -cyloheptadiene and its 5,5-dideuterated analog were studied using variable temperature NMR techniques. The free energy of activation for conformational interchange of the parent compound was found to be 9.02 kcal mol^-1 and that of the 5,5-dideuterated analog to be 9.42 kcal mol^-1. Values of the entropy of activation were found to be -19.91 e. u. and -18.12 e. u. respectively. The spectra were recorded on a Nicolet NMC-360 wide bore spectrometer and the data collected treated as an AB spin system.

The Johnson Creek watershed, Portland, Oregon, has undergone urbanization at an increasing rate. Excessive flooding has occurred in the lower portions of the watershed, resulting in an estimated 1.5 million dollars worth of flood losses annually. In attempts to mitigate the flooding damages millions of dollars have been spent to channelize the creek, and over 200 thousand dollars has been spent during the last 20 years on preliminary feasibility studies alone.

Since the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, the use of off-road vehicles (ORV's) has increased dramatically. These vehicles damage the fragile ecosystems of the seashore. The National Park Service Cooperative Research Unit at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst was commissioned to undertake a five year study of the many facets of off-road vehicle impact on beach and dune as well as salt marsh and tidal flats.
