An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen
Masters Theses
"Many authors have encouraged the use of modular programming techniques in software development. In fact, there is almost total agreement within industrial and academic circles that modularity is a desirable feature of any software package. Unfortunately, the desirability of modular design is almost always voiced without support from experimental evidence.
This thesis consists of an experiment comparing the resource consumption of programmers based on the modularity practices employed during the design and programming phases of software development. The experiment tests the effectiveness of modularity in reducing psychological complexity of software.
The results of the research show that in some cases …
Feral Donkeys : An Assessment Of Control In The Kimberley, S H. Wheeler
Feral Donkeys : An Assessment Of Control In The Kimberley, S H. Wheeler
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Feral donkeys are one of the major limitations to increased pastoral production in many parts of the Kimberley area of Western Australia, where they compete with cattle for food. In addition donkeys are aggressive animals, driving cattle from watering points and better grazing areas. They eliminate perenial plants by overgrazing and therefore reduce the carrying capacity of the range.
Originally introduced as draught animals, donkeys were released when cars arrived; since then they have bred up to large numbers in many areas.
For several years the Agricultural Protection Board has undertaken a programme of donkey shooting from helicopters. Since this …
The Soil Phosphorus Store, G S P Ritchie, D. M. Weaver
The Soil Phosphorus Store, G S P Ritchie, D. M. Weaver
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The management of the soil phosphorus store, or 'super bank' to minimise phosphorus leaching losses is a vital part of any strategy to reduce algal pollution of the Peel-Harvey estuary.
Phosphorus can exist in the soil in four main 'pools'. it may occur in the soil solution or in one of the three pools that contain phosphorus in solid forms. This phosphorus can be in compounds (fertilisers, dead plant material); adsorbed (attached) to soil particles such as organic matter, clay and iron oxide; or as constituents of micro-organisms.

High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis
High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis
Dissertations and Theses
A new preparative route to the only neutral chromium (V) oxide fluoride, chromium oxide trifluoride, has been accomplished by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride at high temperature. The chromium oxide trifluoride is produced as crystals which are suitable for single crystal studies. In reactions of chromium oxide trifluoride with alkali and alkaline metal fluorides in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, new chromium(V) oxide fluoride salts were obtained; these salts were not of high purity due to unknown problems. An attempt to prepare chromium oxide tetrafluoride by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride failed …
Vegetation Changes In Four Study Areas At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Kathryn Ann Kerr
Vegetation Changes In Four Study Areas At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Kathryn Ann Kerr
Masters Theses
The sampling transects at Indiana Dunes were established to show the pre-burn condition of the vetetation and to monitor the long term effects of burning. However, one year of monitoring showed changes in vetetation that further substantiate the need for the burning program.
Miller Woods (Transect A) has burned frequently in recent years. The one year without fire showed little change in the herbaceous layer. The few notable herbaceous changes might indicate a transition to a more mesic community, but should be viewed skeptically because of the wet season in 1982.
Nearly half of the small shrub species at Miller …
Sediment Oxygen Demand In Streams Receiving Sewage Effluent, John J. Schultz
Sediment Oxygen Demand In Streams Receiving Sewage Effluent, John J. Schultz
Masters Theses
Sediment oxygen demand is an important factor in determining dissolved oxygen concentrations in streams and rivers subjected to sewage effluents and other sources of organic pollution. Resuspension of sediments during bottom-scouring after periods of heavy precipitation exerts an immediate and increased oxygen demand on the water and is expected to decrease sediment oxygen demand at the site.
Sediment samples were collected monthly from April through November, 1983 from three small streams subjected to sources of organic pollution. The samples collected were arbitrarily categorized into wet and dry period samples based on the total precipitation between collection dates. Sediment oxygen demand …
The Purification And Partial Characterization Of The Surface Polysaccharides From Three Fast-Growing Rhizobium Japonicum Strains, Madhav P. Yadav
The Purification And Partial Characterization Of The Surface Polysaccharides From Three Fast-Growing Rhizobium Japonicum Strains, Madhav P. Yadav
Masters Theses
The fast-growing strains of R. japonicum were originally isolated from China. They are acid-producing Rhizobia and are capable of nodulating soybeans. These isolates share a common host-specificity (Peking soybean) with the slow-growing R. japonicum strains even though their biochemical properties are more closely related to other fast-growing Rhizobium species. The surface polysaccharides from three fast-growing R. japonicum strains--USDA201, USDA205, and HC205--were isolated and partially characterized. Strain HC205 is a nod⁻ mutant of USDA205 which lacks the symbiotic plasmid. These surface polysaccharides consist of extracellular, capsular and lipopolysaccharides (EPSs, CPSs and LPSs). The EPSs from all three strains are very similar …

Effect Of Temperature On The Association Constants Of Some Divalent Metal Ions With Chloride In Sea Water-Like Solutions, Jose Vinicio Macias Zamora
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Association constants for the formation of lead (II) chloride complexes were studies in aqueous solutions also containing copper (II) and cadmium (II) ions.
The ionic strength was adjusted with sodium perchlorate to resemble that of sea water. The temperature was set at fixed values between 5° and 35° C to determine the effect on the equilibria in these systems. The total metal concentration was less than 10-8 M.
Differential pulse anodic striping voltammetry was used with a conventional three electrode system and a thin-film working electrode of Pt/Hg. Complex formation was followed as a function of the ligand concentration …
The Relationship Of Self-Concept, Sex, Age, Major, Anxiety, Mathematics Background, And Mathematics Ability To The Level Of Mathematics And Statistical Anxiety Among College Juniors, David John Maysick
Dissertations
Problem. One's choice of career has significant effect upon one's future life in terms of earning potential and social interaction. Mathematics/statistical anxiety and the mathematics avoidance often accompanying such anxiety, can influence career choice, causing otherwise talented people to limit their future. The purpose of this study was to determine from selected variables--particularly self-concept--which, if any, were related to the problem of mathematics and/or statistical anxiety.
Method. The statistical sample used was 350 juniors. Stratification was by degree of mathematics content in subject's major field of study. For the study, subjects had to be in the same major category as …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Absolute total cross sections for electron detachment, reactive scattering, charge transfer and dissociative charge transfer have been measured for collisions of hydrogen and halogen negative ions with various molecular targets. The reactants investigated involve H('-), D('-), F('-), Cl('-), Br('-) and I('-) ions as projectiles and H(,2), D(,2), HD, N(,2), CO, O(,2), CO(,2), CH(,4) and Cl(,2) molecules as targets. The energy range of these experiments extended from about 1 eV to about 300 eV in the lab.;The threshold behavior of the detachment cross sections for the reactants H('-)(D('-)) + H(,2),D(,2) and HD has been determined. The thresholds for detachment for both …

Soil Improvement With Bauxite Residues, W H. Tacey, S. C. Ward, K. J. Summers, N. J. Barrow
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The sandy soils of the Peel-Harvey catchment hold water and nutrients very poorly. The Gavin ridges dry out quickly during rainless periods and this severely limits pasture growth. These ridges and the lower lying Joel and Coolup sands also lose a large proportion of the phosphorus, sulfer and potash fertilisers applied to them. Normally the sands lack clay materials to bind and hold the nutrients so rainfall leaches them out.
The Peel-Harvey Study Group, CSIRO, Alcoa and Murdock University have studied the use of a residue from bauxite mining to help overcome these problems. The treated residue has a texture …
