We study the prospects for constructing finite grand unified theories using softly broken N = 2 global supersymmetry. The requirement that the supersymmetry breaking scale be of order 103−104 GeV and that the mixing between the observed light fermions and the mirror fermions present in N = 2 theories be small («mW), make it difficult to construct finite grand unified theories based on a large class of simple groups with a realistic symmetry breaking pattern.

Let H be a completely distributive lattice and hence a Heyting algebra. Goguen's category of fuzzy sets Set(H) Eytan's logos Fuz(H) and the topos of sheaves on H, Sh(H), are interconnected by pairs of adjoint functors between them. Each of the categories has a predicate calculus. These predicate calculi are related through the functors between the categories. Change of base lattice gives rise to several functors which preserve or reflect specific kinds of statements in the predicate calculi. Predicting The Proton Mass From Pi-Pi-Scattering Data, Jf Donoghue, E Golowich, Br Holstein

We relate experimental information on ππ scattering to tree-level effective chiral Lagrangians. The result is of a form similar to that used in Skyrme-type models of the proton, where the nucleons are described as topologically stable solitons of the chiral fields. In such models, one can express the proton mass in terms of measured scattering data, with the result Mp=880±300 MeV. We interpret this as a consistency test for the Skyrme models.

Molecular dynamics can be used to evaluate the path integral representation of the density matrix. Implicit in this method is the assumption that the dynamical system is ergodic. It is shown here that this is not the case in many systems that are of interest. For example water or liquid neon can not be simulated by this method. Monte Carlo methods do not suffer from this weakness.

A Path Integral Monte Carlo Study Of Liquid Neon And The Quantum Effective Pair Potential, Devarajan Thirumalai, Randall W. Hall, Bruce J. Berne

The path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method is used to simulate liquid neon at T=40 K. It is shown that quantum effects are not negligible and that when the quantum effective pair potential is used in a classical molecular dynamics simulation the results obtained for the radial distribution function agrees with that predicted by a full path integral Monte Carlo simulation. The validity of this procedure is further shown by comparing the results obtained by this method to experimental measurements of liquid neon at T=35 K.
