Transition Activities And Their Effects On Middle School Students, Vicki Sue Vanlaere

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness that transitional activities have on student achievement and attendance when students moved from elementary school to middle school. The data were gathered from two school districts that are demographically similar. Data included average daily attendance rates, Terra Nova Achievement Scores from social studies in grades five, six, and seven, as well as math in grades five, six, and seven. There were 187 students in the Treatment Group and 147 in the Control Group for a total of 334 students. Comparison of means for demographic equivalency of the groups (t-test) and …

Branch Detonation Of A Pulse Detonation Engine With Flash Vaporized Jp-8, John David Slack Dec 2006

Branch Detonation Of A Pulse Detonation Engine With Flash Vaporized Jp-8, John David Slack

Theses and Dissertations

Pulse Detonation Engines (PDE) operating on liquid hydrocarbon fuels are limited to operating frequencies of 35 Hz due to long ignition times from a low energy ignition sources. This study shows ignition time of JP-8 can be nearly eliminated by igniting a thrust tube using a secondary detonation. A counter flow heat exchanger attached to a thrust tube utilized waste heat from the detonation process to heat JP-8 to supercritical conditions. The fuel flash vaporized when injected into the air stream of the engine. A detonation was produced by a spark in a 5 cm diameter, 1.37 m long tube. …

The Effects Of Suspended Sediment On The Aquatic Organisms Daphnia Magna And Pimephales Promelas, Neil Capper Dec 2006

The Effects Of Suspended Sediment On The Aquatic Organisms Daphnia Magna And Pimephales Promelas, Neil Capper

All Theses

Land use change results in significant amounts of soil migrating into aquatic streams during storm events. This suspended sediment, even in the absence of adsorbed contaminants, may be a significant stressor to aquatic organisms. The data on ecological effects of suspended sediment has mainly focused on salmonids or ecosystem level consequences such as habitat alteration. Few studies have quantified physiologic effects of suspended solids on water column organisms. The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of suspended clay on Daphnia magna and Pimephales promelas. Results of 7 d toxicity tests with D. magna in natural and …

From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker Dec 2006

From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker

All Theses

The Lebanese families who arrived in South Carolina found themselves in a different environment than most had anticipated. Those who had spent time elsewhere in the U.S. found predominantly rural and predominantly Protestant South Carolina to be almost as alien as they or their parents had found the United States due partly to the religious differences and partly to the cultural differences between the Northeast, where most of them had lived for at least a few years after arriving in the United States, and the Southeast. Most of these new arrivals eventually found success and some degree of acceptance, but …

Optimizing Production Methods For Artifical Silk Proteins Through Bioreactor And Purification Studies Of Recombinant Proteins Expressed From Pichia Pastoris, Aaron Ramey Dec 2006

Optimizing Production Methods For Artifical Silk Proteins Through Bioreactor And Purification Studies Of Recombinant Proteins Expressed From Pichia Pastoris, Aaron Ramey

All Theses

Advancements in the field of biomaterials are being made to produce an artificial silk fiber. A gene was constructed which utilized components from both the dragline silk of Nephila clavipes and nematode collagen. For this engineered protein, the yeast strain Pichia pastoris was chosen to be the host organism. Previous research has shown P. pastoris to have comparatively low amounts of specific protein productivity. Therefore, this problem must be compensated for by obtaining extremely high cell densities. The main focus of this study was to optimize the fermentation parameters of transgenic yeast cultures within a bioreactor in order to increase …

Pro-Inflammatory Properties Of Flavobacterium Columnare Cells And Products On Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Neutrophils, Shannon Billings Dec 2006

Pro-Inflammatory Properties Of Flavobacterium Columnare Cells And Products On Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Neutrophils, Shannon Billings

All Theses

Flavobacterium columnare and Edwardsiella ictaluri are the leading causes for losses in the aquaculture industry. The losses from the diseases caused by these pathogens total $2.5 million for catfish and $100 million for total aquaculture. F. columnare's infection rates and stressors associated with outbreaks have been well-characterized, but the specific inflammatory responses of catfish neutrophils to the bacteria have not been studied. The objective, therefore, was to investigate the pro-inflammatory effects of the outer membrane proteins, extracellular products, and whole live bacteria, heat-killed (HK), and formalin-killed (FK) F. columnare and E. ictaluri to determine the effects on channel catfish phagocyte …

Regional Innovation Systems (Ris) In The U.S. South: The Role Of Local Characteristics Of Ris In Rural Development, Doohee Lee

All Dissertations

Regional innovation systems (RIS) and innovative activity are now recognized as having important roles to play in regional economic development policy. The goal of this study is to expand our understanding of the relationship between regional economic growth and the local characteristics of RIS. The research identified the existence and importance of sources of innovation, knowledge spillovers, and regional spillovers as the principal characteristics of RIS in the South. A knowledge production function approach was used to estimate the determinants of innovative activity in rural counties. A zero inflated negative binomial model was estimated to capture the influence of local …

Economic Analysis Of Stormwater Management Practices, Ritu Sharma Dec 2006

Economic Analysis Of Stormwater Management Practices, Ritu Sharma

All Dissertations

Structural stormwater management practices help reduce the quantity and improve quality of stormwater runoff. This dissertation focuses on costs and cost effectiveness of these practices. Design, construction and maintenance costs data that were collected from six different sources and adjusted for purchasing power differences over time and location are analyzed using stochastic Leontief cost functions. Effects on these costs of land prices, wages for engineering, construction, and landscaping services, water storage or treatment, and differences in designs of the SMPs and the biophysical regions in which they are located are estimated with the Leontief functions. Results indicate that all SMPs …

Discrete Asymptotic Abstractions Of Hybrid Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Jorge L. Piovesan, Herbert G. Tanner Dec 2006

Discrete Asymptotic Abstractions Of Hybrid Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Jorge L. Piovesan, Herbert G. Tanner

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we introduce the notion of finite time mode abstraction to relate a hybrid automaton to a timed automaton that preserves the stability and reachability properties of the former. The abstraction procedure discards the continuous dynamics of each mode in the hybrid automaton completely, keeping only the information about the maximum time in which the continuous state makes a discrete jump. This information is used to construct a timed automaton, based on the original hybrid automaton, and to prove that the stability and reachability properties of the original system are retained in the abstract timed automaton. In the …

On The Head And The Tail Of The Colored Jones Polynomial, Oliver T. Dasbach, Xiao Song Lin Dec 2006

On The Head And The Tail Of The Colored Jones Polynomial, Oliver T. Dasbach, Xiao Song Lin

Faculty Publications

The colored Jones polynomial is a function JK: ℕ → ℤ[t,t-1] associated with a knot K in 3-space. We will show that for an alternating knot K the absolute values of the first and the last three leading coefficients of JK(n) are independent of n when n is sufficiently large. Computation of sample knots indicates that this should be true for any fixed leading coefficient of the colored Jones polynomial for alternating knots. As a corollary we get a volume-ish theorem for the colored Jones polynomial. © Foundation Compositio Mathematica 2006.
