The Effect Of Participation In School-Facilitated Community Service Programmes On Students' Self-Esteem, Sense Of Community Engagement And Attitudes To Christianity, Luke Terrence Reed Dec 2006

The Effect Of Participation In School-Facilitated Community Service Programmes On Students' Self-Esteem, Sense Of Community Engagement And Attitudes To Christianity, Luke Terrence Reed

Theses

Increasingly, student orientated service outreach programmes (community service) are being incorporated into the broad curriculum of Australian High Schools. The assumption made is that such programmes have tangible benefits for students, the community and the schools themselves. Schools that operate out of a Christian paradigm have the added incentive of seeking to assist students give personal expression to religious commitment through the service of others. This study tests the assumption that participation in community service or service outreach activities has positive benefits for the students involved. It explores the effect that student involvement in school-facilitated community service programmes has on ...

Scrolls Of Love: Ruth And The Song Of Songs, Peter S. Hawkins, Lesleigh C. Stahlberg Dec 2006

Scrolls Of Love: Ruth And The Song Of Songs, Peter S. Hawkins, Lesleigh C. Stahlberg

Religion

Scrolls of Love is a book of unions. Edited by a Jew and a Christian who are united by a shared passion for the Bible and a common literary hermeneutic, it joins two biblical scrolls and gathers around them a diverse community of interpreters. It brings together Ruth and the Song of Songs, two seemingly disparate texts of the Hebrew Bible, and reads them through a number of the methodological and theological perspectives.

Respectful of traditional biblical scholarship, the collection of essays moves beyond it; alert to contemporary trends, the volume returns venerable interpretive tradition to center stage. Most significantly ...

The Church First Called Christian: The Melkite Church Of Antioch, Elizabeth Ann Reeves Dec 2006

The Church First Called Christian: The Melkite Church Of Antioch, Elizabeth Ann Reeves

Theses

The Catholic Church is made up of many church communities of different rites, with the main classifications being the Roman rites and the Eastern rites of the Catholic Church. With the influx of migrants especially since the Second World War there has been growth in Australia, in the number of Catholics belonging to the many Eastern rites including Byzantine Catholics, Coptic Catholics and Chaldean Catholics. The Second Vatican Council documents encouraged members of the Catholic Church of the Latin traditions to know and understand the rich traditions of the Easterners so that the full manifestation of the catholicity of the ...

A Church On The Move: A History Of First Baptist Church Clemson 1907-2006, Lawson Clary Dec 2006

A Church On The Move: A History Of First Baptist Church Clemson 1907-2006, Lawson Clary

All Theses

The purpose of First Baptist Clemson`s founding was two fold, to provide a body of worship for college students at Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina and to reach the Clemson community. The main focus of the church at its inception was to reach out to students, but as the church and school grew, so, too, did the need for the church to expand its ministries.
Throughout the history of First Baptist Clemson, the church never compromised on its traditions and values under pressure from the community or outside forces. In every situation the church held strong in its ...

The Gospels And The Reader, Sandra Marie Schneiders Dec 2006

The Gospels And The Reader, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

From at least the eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century the prevailing understanding of history and of texts and their meaning was almost exclusively object-centred. The reader of the text seldom came into view, and if she or he did, the exegesis was suspect. History was understood as a free-standing state of affairs which existed 'in the past' independently of the reader. Texts were free-standing semantic containers in which a single, stable meaning was intentionally embedded by the author. The meaning in the biblical texts was presumed to be primarily information about history. Thus, the task of the biblical scholar was ...

Shankara: A Hindu Revivalist Or A Crypto-Buddhist?, Kencho Tenzin Dec 2006

Shankara: A Hindu Revivalist Or A Crypto-Buddhist?, Kencho Tenzin

Religious Studies Theses

Shankara, the great Indian thinker, was known as the accurate expounder of the Upanishads. He is seen as a towering figure in the history of Indian philosophy and is credited with restoring the teachings of the Vedas to their pristine form. However, there are others who do not see such contributions from Shankara. They criticize his philosophy by calling it “crypto-Buddhism.” It is his unique philosophy of Advaita Vedanta that puts him at odds with other Hindu orthodox schools. Ironically, he is also criticized by Buddhists as a “born enemy of Buddhism” due to his relentless attacks on their tradition ...

Handel's Messiah:A Heaven On Earth, Erin Hurd

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"George Frideric Handel’s Messiah has been an oratorio that has attracted me to its music since the beginning of high school. Every year in December my high school performs selections from Messiah as a community event. In my sophomore year of high school my chorus class studied Messiah and its origins. [I feel that] Handel’s work is attractive to me because it gives life to Biblical events. I have never read the Holy Bible straight through, but I have learned that Handel took the exact words ...

Incarnational Development, Donald J. Lococo Dec 2006

Incarnational Development, Donald J. Lococo

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Aside from the certainty of birth and death, all other qualities of human life are propositional. We were born; we will die … these are the axiomatic statements of human life – i.e., self-evident. We need no proof of their truth, certainly there can be no argument. Anything else we say about human life contains the words “if” and “then” as bridge elements of the inherent uncertainty of life. This “if/then” grammatical structure implies by necessity the influence of external factors that determine and qualify their truth content ...

Living With Other Gods: Discovering How People Live In A Religiously Pluralistic Environment, Hope Tomaselli

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"It is inevitable that people will always disagree on different matters in life. One of the most controversial issues in today’s world is religion. There are numerous religions in the world and each one carries different beliefs. What many people do not understand is that in order to live peacefully, people need to be willing to accept and respect that everyone does not share the same religion. Instead of arguing over who is right and who is wrong, we as a people should respect each other’s ...

A Beautiful Goodbye, Kristi A. Bradley

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I tip toed silently down the dim corridor, holding my father’s clammy hand as tightly as I could. I was scared and I didn’t know what to expect. We followed the nurse, who made me nervous because she gave me a sympathetic look. A look that told me everything was going to be okay when I didn’t even know what was really wrong. When we turned the corner and walked into the small dark room, there she was…my grandma. The one I played cards ...

Discernment: A Faith-Filled Journey Or Problematic Process?, Jodi Rowland

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"According to the on line site, Dictionary.com, the word discernment has four viable meanings that relate to ‘acuteness of judgment’ or ‘using keen insight.’ The ability to discern, then, is a process in determining a potential outcome or judgment. Lately, discernment has become a ‘hot’ word for Catholics, in particular young Catholics, who are searching for their next step in life and their faith development."

"I graduated from Fisher with B.A.’s in Religious Studies and Sociology. After graduating from Fisher I had planned on attending Buffalo State College for graduate school but changed my mind that summer. I ended up staying in Rochester for a few months and looking around for a job (I must admit, however, I did not put much effort into this.) That fall I decided to move back to my hometown to see if I could find a job in or around the NYC area. Unable to ...

Living With Other Gods: My Mom, My Dad, My Grandmother, And Me, Timothy Crumley

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The notion of “living with other gods” applies to my family. Living with other gods means that people with different beliefs live with one-another peacefully. When applying this notion to my family, one can relate it best to the religious relations that are between my father and me and that are of between my mother and grandmother. My name is Timothy Crumley; I’m 14 years of age, I’m in the 9th grade, and I attend a collage-prep school called The Harley School. My father seems ...

Joshua 6:15-21: Exploring The Deeper Meaning Of The Herem, Mike Wegman

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In the Old Testament, there are a number of books that contain violent stories that may shock the casual reader. Some of these stories seem to encourage not only the slaughtering of enemy armies, but also the murder of innocent civilians. The book of Joshua, in particular, contains a number of such tales. In chapters six through eleven of this book, God instructs Joshua and his followers to obliterate dozens of enemy armies, and subsequently orders them to lay their towns to waste. Joshua and his followers put ...

Four years later, I offer my editorial again, with no small sense of sadness and with a much greater sense of urgency."
