Controlling Pulse Energy Of An Optical Amplifier By Controlling Pump Diode Current, Peter Delfyett, Richard Stoltz Dec 2006

Controlling Pulse Energy Of An Optical Amplifier By Controlling Pump Diode Current, Peter Delfyett, Richard Stoltz

UCF Patents

The present invention includes the method of using optically-pumped optical amplifiers to remove material from a body by optical-ablation through time-compressing the amplified pulse and illuminating a portion of the body with the time-compressed optical pulse. The pulse energy of semiconductor optical amplifiers may also be adjusted by controlling the pump diode current.

The Arms Race In College Football, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2006

The Arms Race In College Football, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Watching the BCS crash and burn again this year brings to mind a number of developments in intercollegiate athletics that have been accumulating in my memory for the past month or so. Before turning to those less significant topics-as who is number one is always the most important question in intercollegiate athletics-I would like to offer a modest proposal to solve the BCS Championship Game quandary. Given the Ohio State dominance and perfect record, and given the fact that they have already hammered Michigan, the Buckeyes should be awarded the BCS championship outright. No one is close to their level ...

Variable Focus Liquid Lens, Shin-Tson Wu, Hongwen Ren Nov 2006

Variable Focus Liquid Lens, Shin-Tson Wu, Hongwen Ren

UCF Patents

A liquid-filled variable focus lens cell is disclosed. The liquid lens cell consists of four parts: a clear distensible membrane, a transparent wall member, liquid with a fixed volume stored in lens cell chamber, and an annular periphery sealing ring. The inner surfaces of the annular sealing ring are sealed with distensible membrane. The radius of the annular sealing ring is changeable, similar to a conventional iris diaphragm. By tuning the radius of the annular sealing ring, the stored liquid in the lens cell will be redistributed, thus change the curvature of the distensible membrane. Therefore, the liquid lens cell ...

Genetic Engineering Of Plant Chloroplasts, Henry Daniell, Bruce Mcfadden Nov 2006

Genetic Engineering Of Plant Chloroplasts, Henry Daniell, Bruce Mcfadden

UCF Patents

Novel chimeric constructions and methods for their use are provided for expression of exogenous genes in a plant chloroplast. Particularly, expression is achieved by the use of a chloroplast or bacterial 5' untranslated region in the expression cassette. The expression cassette may be integrated into the chloroplast genome by the use of chloroplast DNA flanking sequences, or may replicate autonomously if provided with a chloroplast origin of replication. Plants and cells containing the transformed chloroplasts are also provided. The constructs may be used with both monocotyledenous and dicotyledenous chloroplasts.

The Breeders' Cup, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 2006

The Breeders' Cup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Since the first running of the Breeders' Cup in 1984, I have sat before my television each year and watched the greatest day of horse racing available in this country. I haven't seen all the Breeders' Cups, having been out of the country for a few of them, but have seen most of these great spectacles of racing.

Universal Chloroplast Integration And Expression Vectors, Transformed Plants And Products Thereof, Henry Daniell Oct 2006

Universal Chloroplast Integration And Expression Vectors, Transformed Plants And Products Thereof, Henry Daniell

UCF Patents

The invention provides universal chloroplast integration and expression vectors which are competent to stably transform and integrate genes of interest into chloroplast genome of multiple species of plants. Transformed plants and their progeny are provided. Monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants are transformed which have never been transformed heretofore. Plants transformed with a synthetic gene express valuable biodegradable protein-based polymers (PBPs). Transformed plants produce high value molecules. Resistance is provided to agricultural crops against the major classes of chemical herbicides. Herbicide resistance is used as a lethal selectable marker for chloroplast transformation. The transformed plants are capable of expressing in addition to ...

Baseball's New Cba, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 2006

Baseball's New Cba, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As the World Series came to an end on Friday with Tony LaRussa receiving his latest anointing from the fans of Cardinal Nation (prepare yourselves for another book), others were left to wonder at the fantastic turnaround by the Tigers, who went from juggernaut to gift-givers in less than a week. The baseball story that was of greater significance was the announcement that a new contract agreement had been reached between the Players Association and the baseball owners. Collective bargaining, it seems, has worked once again, establishing a two time winning streak for the players, the owners, and the fans.

Ring Geometry Diode Lasers Arrays And Methods So That They Are Coherent With Each Other., Michael Bass, Jun Dong Oct 2006

Ring Geometry Diode Lasers Arrays And Methods So That They Are Coherent With Each Other., Michael Bass, Jun Dong

UCF Patents

Systems, configurations and methods of using laser diodes in ring-shaped arrays placed a distance away from thin disk solid-state laser gain media, which provide uniformly absorbed pump power distribution with high absorption efficiency. This results in major improvements in the scalability and ruggedness of such lasers and disk laser amplifiers. Use of the diode laser pump configurations of the invention results in compact, robust and scalable lasers that produce high quality, high power outputs.
