Gliomas express mutant isocitrate dehydrogenases producing excessive amounts of D 2-hydroxyglutarate (D2HG) and releasing some of it into the environment. The immune surveillance is reduced as a result, however, the mechanisms behind lymphocyte suppression by the D2HG stereoisomer remain unknown. I incubated Jurkat T cells with D2HG at concentrations present within and surrounding gliomas, or its obverse L2HG stereoisomer, and quantified 2HG isomers within washed cells by TSPC derivatization with stable isotope-labeled D2HG and L2HG internal standards, HPLC separation, and mass spectrometry. D2HG was found in quiescent cells in double the amount of L2HG. External D2HG or L2HG increased the …

GERD is an esophageal disease that has both esophageal and extra-esophageal symptoms. Due to the acidic nature of GERD, there appears to be a disruption in the function of the tissues surrounding the area of the vocal folds. This study investigated the influence of GERD as it relates to voice and swallowing. Data were previously collected on twelve individuals, six with a medical diagnosis of GERD and six with no medical diagnosis of GERD, and analyzed. This included descriptive analysis of data points from a Visi-Pitch, Videostroboscopy, and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow (FFES). The objective measurements from the …

Graphic Diaspora: Reframing Narratives Of American Identity In Black Comic Books, Ashley Wilson
ETD Archive
Comic books with Black main characters have been the subject of much critical exploration over the years. Typical analyses of these comics have focused on identity politics and representation of Black characters. However, critical discussion has not yet determined a method for interpreting representation of Black characters within comic books. This study incorporates approaches to reading Black expressive texts, caricature, and narratives of Black characters written by white authors to analyze the comic books All Negro Comics, The Black Panther, Black, and Bayou. Additionally, it argues that Black-authored Black comics require a reframing of the text through an African American …

Iron-based magnetic alloys possess very good magnetic and mechanical properties. Among these alloys Fe-Si-B-based alloys show outstanding saturation magnetization and coercivity which makes them great candidates for many industrial applications. Addition of certain elements to the Fe-Si-B base is proven to improve the homogeneity and fineness of microstructure as well as enhance the magnetic behavior of these alloys. In this research work, we have studied the effect of adding copper and niobium to the Fe-Si-B base alloy. Previous studies have shown that magnetic alloys show better magnetic properties when their microstructure consists of nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous matrix. In …

Anomia is a relevant language deficit secondary to aphasia that is treated in the speech-language pathologist profession. Most aphasia diagnoses utilize aspects of confrontational naming tasks during speech therapy or testing. This study investigated the nature of word errors and the response time (RT) in persons with aphasia (PWA). Six individuals, three with nonfluent and three with fluent aphasia were asked to name objects in four common categories (occupational tools, everyday objects, food, and clothing) presented under two conditions (1) picture objects on a computer screen and (2) real physical objects. To measure RT and word error, participants were instructed …

Modern literature is rife with examples of authors dramatizing the various stressors suffered by families populating the American suburbs. Within this theme, two such authors, Richard Yates and Gillian Flynn, use their craft to explore not only the social orthodoxy expected by suburban residents, but also the performative aspects applied when that conformity is challenged by these inherent pressures. The presence of these social strains as it’s examined by each author, both of whom are writing 60 years apart, furthers the commentary on the toxicities of suburban living in post-WWII America (Yates) and the modern technological age (Flynn) by surveying …

Building Energy Simulations (BES) are necessary for designing energy-efficient systems. Open-source simulation software developed by the Department of Energy (DOE), EnergyPlus (EP) provides Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) weather data that consists of a 15-year average. Two major concerns about this data are the inability to detect extreme conditions and limited data locations. There is a greater number of Microclimate (MC) stations that can be used for simulations, but it involves time-consuming data preparation to match the EP format. This study investigated the effects of Urban Heat Island (UHI) and the MC of Lake Erie. A comparison of the MC data …

It's Just Who I Am: A Narrative Inquiry Of The Emergence Of Culturally Responsive School Leaders, Bm Towns
ETD Archive
Culturally Responsive School Leadership is one of the most essential elements of the academic and longitudinal success of minoritized students from urban hyper-ghettoized communities. Despite the impact of Culturally Responsive School Leadership, the focus on improving learning has centered teachers instead of their leaders. Upon this realization, this study set out to center the Culturally Responsive School Leader, their context within the landscape of leadership and education, the history of Black Americans, and the frameworks of cultural and social capital as critical to the manner in which Culturally Responsive School Leaders engage with their students, families, communities, and the educational …

At a religious school of unspecified denomination—but definitely NOT Catholic—two women fall in love. One of them has a chainsaw, the other a gun. There’s also a horny parrot, a horny pastor and a senile mother, not to mention Lucifer, who is a bit of a teenage girl and a HUGE Billie Eilish fan. And the end of the Universe is coming, FYI, via the Big Rip, so there’s that too. And this play is also about addiction and withdrawal and recovery and the capacity or incapacity for love to overcome forces that can overwhelm the self.

Biochemical Characterization Of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes As A Model Of Barth Syndrome, Alisha J. House
ETD Archive
Barth Syndrome (BTHS) is an X-linked inborn error of metabolism (IEM) which manifests as a multi-systemic disease. One of the primary symptoms is dilated cardiomyopathy, and alongside the cardiovascular disease that arises, patients often experience metabolic abnormalities such as 3-methylglutaconic aciduria, growth retardation, and neutropenia. There has been a need for the development of a suitable in vitro modeling system which will accurately recapitulate the biochemical and physical nature of BTHS. The purpose of this project has been to develop a model for studying the biochemical pathogenesis of Barth Syndrome using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs). To achieve …

A Multi-Spatial Analysis Of Land Use Effects On Freshwater Mussels In The Upper Cuyahoga River And Tinkers Creek, Tamar Atwell
ETD Archive
Mussels are considered one indicator of good water quality in rivers, but over the past 20 years mussel populations have continued to decline, while water quality improves. According to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA), water quality in the Cuyahoga River is now within safe levels for all parameters. However, what are safe levels for humans may not be safe for mussels. An analysis of freshwater mussel populations in two similarly sized watersheds, the Upper Cuyahoga River and Tinkers Creek was conducted. Correlations of mussel abundance and diversity were assessed by multivariate GIS/remote sensing tools to contrast water flow rates, …
An Analytical Methodology To Security Constraints Management In Power System Operation, Shubo Zhang
An Analytical Methodology To Security Constraints Management In Power System Operation, Shubo Zhang
ETD Archive
In a deregulated electricity market, Independent System Operators (ISOs) are responsible for dispatching power to the load securely, efficiently, and economically. ISO performs Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) to guarantee sufficient generation commitment, maximized social welfare and facilitating market-driven economics. A large number of security constraints would render the model impossible to solve under time requirements. Developing a method to identify the minimum set of security constraints without overcommitting is necessary to reduce Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) solution time. To overcome this challenge, we developed a powerful tool called security constraint screening. The proposed approach effectively filters out non-dominating …

Contrary to …
Predicting Depression, Anxiety, And Burden: Self-Compassion, Self-Esteem, And Coping In Caregivers Of Individuals With Dementia, Claire Grant
ETD Archive
Caregivers of Individuals with Dementia (IWDs) face unique stressors as a result of their role as caregiver. While the negative outcomes associated with providing care for an IWD are well established, including increased levels of burden and increased symptoms of depression and anxiety, the predictors of these well-being outcomes are not. Based on previous research, in the proposed study, predictors include self-compassion, self-esteem, and coping techniques. It is currently unknown how these variables impact outcomes like depression, anxiety, and burden individually or how they fit together into a larger theoretical model of caregiving. This line of research has three main …

An Examination Of Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence Severity Within Same-Sex Compared To Opposite-Sex Couples, Eric K. Frazier
ETD Archive
Background: About 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV; CDC, 2019). Although there have been numerous studies on IPV, our knowledge pertains to IPV in heterosexual couples. Although IPV occurs at similar rates in both opposite and same sex couples, studies suggest that individuals are more likely to evaluate IPV in opposite-sex couples as more severe compared to same-sex couples. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine college students’ perceptions of IPV in both opposite-sex and same-sex couples. Procedure: The study included 144 participants who read eight vignettes, four of …
Racial Microaggressions And Mental Health: Internalized Racism As A Mediator And Black Identity And Social Support As Moderators, Steven M. Sanders
Racial Microaggressions And Mental Health: Internalized Racism As A Mediator And Black Identity And Social Support As Moderators, Steven M. Sanders
ETD Archive
Internalized racism, also referred to as appropriated racial oppression, refers to the phenomenon of people of color adopting negative racist messages about their worth and abilities. The internalization of racism by members of the targeted group results in an experience of self-degradation and self-alienation and the assumption of one’s inferiority, which is directly related to issues of self-esteem, self-confidence, shame, depression, and anxiety. This study used structural regression with moderation and mediation to explore the possibility of internalized racism as a mediating variable and black identity and perceived social support as possible moderators. A sample of 639 participants (MAge = …

Living life well is difficult to define; however, research has burgeoned over the last 40 years examining the concept of well-being. Past work has approached well-being in different ways where some emphasize feeling good in the here-and-now (i.e., subjective well-being), and others emphasize flourishing despite life’s existential challenges (i.e., eudaimonic well-being). Though age-based stereotypes are predominantly negative, older adults report living generally positive lives (i.e., higher positive feelings, more meaning in life). This phenomenon is called the “paradox of well-being” (PWB), and it remains a perplexing phenomenon in emotional aging research. Most prevailing theories assume a pro-hedonic approach where positive …

Prior research has shown that yoga and mindfulness-based practices have been used to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety (Chong et al., 2011; Riley et al., 2014). Additionally, there has been a push to introduce yoga into prison through the Prison Yoga Project (PYP). Yoga has been studied in adult prison and has had success in aiding inmates with improvements of stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as improvement of self-regulation (Auty et al., 2015). However, yoga and the PYP are unstudied in juvenile correctional facilities. The present study examined the usage of the PYP in one juvenile …
Age Differences In Emotional Reactivity To Subtypes Of Sadness And Anger, Ryan M. Muskin
Age Differences In Emotional Reactivity To Subtypes Of Sadness And Anger, Ryan M. Muskin
ETD Archive
Emotional reactivity has been commonly studied through the discrete emotion approach model (DEA) that categorizes emotions as singular unique experiences (sadness, fear, disgust, anger, etc.). Reactivity to a discrete emotion is related to the contextual relevance of the emotional elicitor, and thus, may result in variable reactivity profiles across different age groups. While prior research has typically associated older age with sadness and younger age with anger, there may be contextual subtypes within these discrete categories that are more or less relevant to either age group. Characteristics of older age are associated with themes of loss (death, diminished physical ability, …

The available research on psychosis is presently lacking practitioners’ beliefs about people with symptoms of psychosis (focused here on auditory verbal hallucination) as well as conceptualization and treatment planning with these clients. There is some growing interest in “healthy voice-hearers,” people who hear voices but do not experience distress. This study comprised information about clinicians’ experiences through an empirical phenomenological method guided by a critical theory framework. A sample of both counseling (n = 4) and clinical practitioners (n = 10), including psychologists and predoctoral and postdoctoral interns, was recruited and interviewed about their beliefs and experiences, as well as …
A Low-Memory Spectral-Correlation Analyzer For Digital Qam-Srrc Waveforms, Dylan Jacob Gormley
A Low-Memory Spectral-Correlation Analyzer For Digital Qam-Srrc Waveforms, Dylan Jacob Gormley
ETD Archive
Cyclostationary signal processing (CSP) provides the ability to estimate received waveforms’ statistical features blindly. Quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) waveforms, when filtered by the square-root-raised cosine (SRRC) pulse shape function, have cyclic features that CSP can exploit to detect waveform parameters such as symbol rate (SR) and center frequency (CF). The estimation of these SR-CF pairs enables a cognitive radio (CR) to perform spectrum sensing techniques such as spectrum sharing and interference mitigation. Here, we investigate a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) application of a blind symbol rate-center frequency estimator. First, this study provides a background on the theory behind the cyclic …

A Study On The Effect Of The Mandated Change In Board Composition On Firm Performance & Ceo Compensation, Dishant Pandya
A Study On The Effect Of The Mandated Change In Board Composition On Firm Performance & Ceo Compensation, Dishant Pandya
ETD Archive
In this dissertation, I examine the long-run effect of the 2003 mandated change in board composition on firm performance and CEO compensation. In the first essay, I examine the impact of changes in firm performance to shed light on the debate between agency and insider-knowledge theorists. Agency theorists argue that installing an independent board would increase monitoring of management, thereby enhancing firm performance. In contrast, the insider-knowledge hypothesis suggests that an independent board lacks valuable insider information for effective advisory functions and, hence, is detrimental to firm performance. In the second essay, I investigate the effect of the mandate on …
Neighborhood Effects Of Social Captial On Children And Its Meaning For Adulthood Outcomes, Jinhee Yun
Neighborhood Effects Of Social Captial On Children And Its Meaning For Adulthood Outcomes, Jinhee Yun
ETD Archive
Individuals’ residential location strongly affects their personal access to opportunity, such as obtaining sufficient public goods and services. In addition, the neighborhood environment shapes the outcomes of their children when they reach adulthood. One explanation for these neighborhood effects on children is social capital. This study reconceptualizes social capital based on Pierre Bourdieu’s Capital theory (1984; 2011) to resolve unexplained gaps in existing social capital theory and aims to analyze empirically the impact of various forms of neighborhood social capital in childhood on adult outcomes. This study categorizes social capital into two types: relation-based social capital (relationships within a neighborhood) …

Depression is marked by depressive affects which consists of dysphoric mood reflected by increased levels of negative affect (NA), and anhedonia which is characterized by decreased positive affect (PA). The dysregulation of affective states that characterizes depressive disorders may reflect emotion regulation deficits. Prior work has frequently linked maladaptive responses with depression, while evidence linking adaptive responses and depression has been mixed. Additionally, emerging evidence has shown a degree of specificity between emotion regulation and affect. Therefore, the present study examined whether emotion regulation responses show specificity with NA and PA across 7-day and 12-month periods within a large sample …
