Culture, Efficacy, And Outcome Expectancy In Teacher Preparation; How Do The Beliefs Of Pre-Service Interns, Mentor Teachers, University Supervisors And Teacher Educators Compare?, Sashelle Thomas Alexander

ETD Archive

Researchers agree that teachers' attitudes and efficacy beliefs play a significant role in student achievement (Armor et al., 1976 Hoy & Spero, 2005 Szabo & Mokhtari, 2004 Woolfolk & Hoy, 1990). Teachers with high self-efficacy: 1) believe they can positively influence students' learning and achievement despite environmental conditions (Armor et al., 1976 Ashton & Webb, 1986 Gibson & Dembo, 1984) and 2) assume accountability for student learning (Gibson & Dembo, 1984 Ross, 1998 Siwatu, 2007). On the contrary, teachers with low teacher efficacy have minimal expectations for and fewer interactions with minority students. They are also more likely to feel …

Semen Quality And Chemical Oxidative Stress; Quantification And Remediation, Saleem Ali Bani-Hani

ETD Archive

The necessary multi-step process to prepare human semen for assisted reproduction (AR) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) is known to induce oxidative stress in human spermatozoa and subsequent damage to the integrity of their cell components and, thus, to their function. Literature reports have viewed this as a potential link with the high frequency of birth defects among the IVF babies. In this work, we studied the effect of incubation and centrifugation on human sperm quality using established AR protocols. We found that in vitro incubation and centrifugation (20 min at 220g) of sperm generally degrade sperm quality in …

ETD Archive

This study used a mixed method design to investigate the parental perspective of school size and its impact on the academic environment, the school atmosphere, and relationships within a northeast Ohio high school. The results of the study illuminated that administrators who are considering or forced to eliminate small school initiatives should not merely abandon their small school programs for the traditional large school but rather, attempt to incorporate some of the components of the small schools to the traditional large school setting in order to increase parental satisfaction and support

Modulation And Multiple Access Techniques For Ultra-Wideband Communication Systems, Song Cui Jan 2011

Modulation And Multiple Access Techniques For Ultra-Wideband Communication Systems, Song Cui

ETD Archive

Two new energy detection (ED) Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems are proposed in this dissertation. The first one is an ED UWB system based on pulse width modulation (PWM). The bit error rate (BER) performance of this ED PWM system is slightly worse than ED pulse position modulation (PPM) system in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. However, the BER performance of this ED PWM system surpasses that of a PPM system in multipath channels since a PWM system does not suffer cross-modulation interference (CMI) as a PPM system. In the presence of synchronization errors, the BER performance of a PWM system …

Role Of The Thrombospondin - Cd36 - Histidine Rich Glycoprotein Pathway In Tumor Growth And Angiogenesis, James Scott Hale

ETD Archive

Cancer is typically thought of as an uncommon disease, in which solid tumors require a blood supply in order to grow and metastasize. Interestingly, upon autopsy a large portion of elderly individuals display numerous non-vascularized lesions throughout their bodies. Thus, the angiogenic switch in the development of cancer presents an important therapeutic target. Previous work by our laboratory has established an interaction between CD36, Histidine Rich Glycoprotein (HRGP) and Thrombospondin 1 (TSP-1) in the modulation of angiogenesis. Briefly, endothelial cell receptor CD36 interaction with soluble or cell bound TSP-1 leads to the induction of an apoptotic signaling cascade in vascular …

Simplifying Embedded System Development Through Whole-Program Compilers, William Patrick Mccartney Jan 2011

Simplifying Embedded System Development Through Whole-Program Compilers, William Patrick Mccartney

ETD Archive

As embedded systems embrace ever more complicated microcontrollers, they present both new capability and new complexity. To simplify their development, some lessons of computer application development will translate with additional work. This thesis offers one such translation. It shows how whole-program compilers - those that broadly analyze a program's entire source code - can achieve performance gains and remove faults in embedded system applications. In so doing, this yields a novel stackless threading system named UnStacked C. UnStacked C enables cooperative multithreading without the risk of stack overflows in embedded system applications. We also propose a novel preemption system called …

Influences Of Environmental Variability, Genetics And Plant Size On Variation In Sexual And Clonal Reproduction And Allocation Of Resources In Three Wetland Plant Species, Ann M. Nicholls Jan 2011

Influences Of Environmental Variability, Genetics And Plant Size On Variation In Sexual And Clonal Reproduction And Allocation Of Resources In Three Wetland Plant Species, Ann M. Nicholls

ETD Archive

Optimal Partitioning Theory (OPT) states organisms will give more resources to structures and functions that enhance fitness. OPT can be applied to reproduction in clonal plants, which allocate resources between two modes of reproduction--sexual through fruits and clonal through spacers and ramets. In nutrient rich environments, clonal growth allows offspring to stay in beneficial surroundings, while in nutrient poor conditions, sexual reproduction can allow escape and generation of new, potentially more fit offspring. I tested this hypothesis by comparing clonal and sexual reproductive allocation in Penthorum sedoides under differing nutrient levels over two generations. Genotypic and environmental influences on reproductive …

Partial-Data Interpolation During Arcing Of An X-Ray Tube In A Computed Tomography Scanner, Jaisingh Rajwade Jan 2011

Partial-Data Interpolation During Arcing Of An X-Ray Tube In A Computed Tomography Scanner, Jaisingh Rajwade

ETD Archive

X-ray tubes are used in computed tomography (CT) scanners as the energy source for generation of images. These tubes occasionally tend to arc, an undesired phenomenon where high current surges through the tube. During the time that the x-ray tube recovers to full voltage after an arc, image data is being collected. Normally this data, acquired at less than full voltage, is discarded and interpolation is performed over the arc duration. However, this is not ideal and some residual imperfections in images, called artifacts, still remain. Proposed here is an algorithm that corrects for improper tube voltage, allowing previously discarded …

Novel Translational Regulation Of The Proapoptotic Bcl2 Member Puma And Its Role During Skeletal Myoblast Apoptosis, Atossa Shaltouki

ETD Archive

Differentiation and apoptosis are coordinately regulated in skeletal myoblasts. During the process of skeletal myoblast differentiation, our lab has determined that roughly 30 of myoblasts undergo apoptosis rather than differentiation. Further, we have reported that cytochrome C is released, and that the expression level of the pro-apoptotic Bcl2 family member PUMA is elevated, when 23A2 myoblasts are cultured in DM. Our long-term goal is to identify targets for manipulation that would abrogate this apoptosis without affecting differentiation. These findings could be significant to the study of myoblast transfer as a therapeutic approach. The goals of this dissertation are to: 1- …
