An Examination Of Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence Severity Within Same-Sex Compared To Opposite-Sex Couples, Eric K. Frazier Dec 2021

An Examination Of Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence Severity Within Same-Sex Compared To Opposite-Sex Couples, Eric K. Frazier

ETD Archive

Background: About 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV; CDC, 2019). Although there have been numerous studies on IPV, our knowledge pertains to IPV in heterosexual couples. Although IPV occurs at similar rates in both opposite and same sex couples, studies suggest that individuals are more likely to evaluate IPV in opposite-sex couples as more severe compared to same-sex couples. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine college students’ perceptions of IPV in both opposite-sex and same-sex couples. Procedure: The study included 144 participants who read eight vignettes, four of …

Racial Microaggressions And Mental Health: Internalized Racism As A Mediator And Black Identity And Social Support As Moderators, Steven M. Sanders May 2021

Racial Microaggressions And Mental Health: Internalized Racism As A Mediator And Black Identity And Social Support As Moderators, Steven M. Sanders

ETD Archive

Internalized racism, also referred to as appropriated racial oppression, refers to the phenomenon of people of color adopting negative racist messages about their worth and abilities. The internalization of racism by members of the targeted group results in an experience of self-degradation and self-alienation and the assumption of one’s inferiority, which is directly related to issues of self-esteem, self-confidence, shame, depression, and anxiety. This study used structural regression with moderation and mediation to explore the possibility of internalized racism as a mediating variable and black identity and perceived social support as possible moderators. A sample of 639 participants (MAge = …

Energy-Oriented Modeling And Control Of Robotic Systems, Amin Ghorbanpour Jan 2021

Energy-Oriented Modeling And Control Of Robotic Systems, Amin Ghorbanpour

ETD Archive

This research focuses on the energy-oriented control of robotic systems using an ultracapacitor as the energy source. The primary objective is to simultaneously achieve the motion task objective and to increase energy efficiency through energy regeneration. To achieve this objective, three aims have been introduced and studied: brushless DC motors (BLDC) control by achieving optimum current in the motor, such that the motion task is achieved, and the energy consumption is minimized. A proof-ofconcept study to design a BLDC motor driver which has superiority compare to an off-the-shelf driver in terms of energy regeneration, and finally, the third aim is …

When Positive And Negative Collide: Mixed Emotions In Adulthood And Old Age, Lucas J. Hamlilton Jan 2021

When Positive And Negative Collide: Mixed Emotions In Adulthood And Old Age, Lucas J. Hamlilton

ETD Archive

Living life well is difficult to define; however, research has burgeoned over the last 40 years examining the concept of well-being. Past work has approached well-being in different ways where some emphasize feeling good in the here-and-now (i.e., subjective well-being), and others emphasize flourishing despite life’s existential challenges (i.e., eudaimonic well-being). Though age-based stereotypes are predominantly negative, older adults report living generally positive lives (i.e., higher positive feelings, more meaning in life). This phenomenon is called the “paradox of well-being” (PWB), and it remains a perplexing phenomenon in emotional aging research. Most prevailing theories assume a pro-hedonic approach where positive …

The Effects Of Yoga On Incarcerated Youth, Kyle Eyman Jan 2021

The Effects Of Yoga On Incarcerated Youth, Kyle Eyman

ETD Archive

Prior research has shown that yoga and mindfulness-based practices have been used to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety (Chong et al., 2011; Riley et al., 2014). Additionally, there has been a push to introduce yoga into prison through the Prison Yoga Project (PYP). Yoga has been studied in adult prison and has had success in aiding inmates with improvements of stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as improvement of self-regulation (Auty et al., 2015). However, yoga and the PYP are unstudied in juvenile correctional facilities. The present study examined the usage of the PYP in one juvenile …

Age Differences In Emotional Reactivity To Subtypes Of Sadness And Anger, Ryan M. Muskin Jan 2021

Age Differences In Emotional Reactivity To Subtypes Of Sadness And Anger, Ryan M. Muskin

ETD Archive

Emotional reactivity has been commonly studied through the discrete emotion approach model (DEA) that categorizes emotions as singular unique experiences (sadness, fear, disgust, anger, etc.). Reactivity to a discrete emotion is related to the contextual relevance of the emotional elicitor, and thus, may result in variable reactivity profiles across different age groups. While prior research has typically associated older age with sadness and younger age with anger, there may be contextual subtypes within these discrete categories that are more or less relevant to either age group. Characteristics of older age are associated with themes of loss (death, diminished physical ability, …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Clinicians’ Approaches To Working With People Who Hear Voices, Laura M. Fogarty Jan 2021

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Clinicians’ Approaches To Working With People Who Hear Voices, Laura M. Fogarty

ETD Archive

The available research on psychosis is presently lacking practitioners’ beliefs about people with symptoms of psychosis (focused here on auditory verbal hallucination) as well as conceptualization and treatment planning with these clients. There is some growing interest in “healthy voice-hearers,” people who hear voices but do not experience distress. This study comprised information about clinicians’ experiences through an empirical phenomenological method guided by a critical theory framework. A sample of both counseling (n = 4) and clinical practitioners (n = 10), including psychologists and predoctoral and postdoctoral interns, was recruited and interviewed about their beliefs and experiences, as well as …

A Low-Memory Spectral-Correlation Analyzer For Digital Qam-Srrc Waveforms, Dylan Jacob Gormley Jan 2021

A Low-Memory Spectral-Correlation Analyzer For Digital Qam-Srrc Waveforms, Dylan Jacob Gormley

ETD Archive

Cyclostationary signal processing (CSP) provides the ability to estimate received waveforms’ statistical features blindly. Quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) waveforms, when filtered by the square-root-raised cosine (SRRC) pulse shape function, have cyclic features that CSP can exploit to detect waveform parameters such as symbol rate (SR) and center frequency (CF). The estimation of these SR-CF pairs enables a cognitive radio (CR) to perform spectrum sensing techniques such as spectrum sharing and interference mitigation. Here, we investigate a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) application of a blind symbol rate-center frequency estimator. First, this study provides a background on the theory behind the cyclic …

A Study On The Effect Of The Mandated Change In Board Composition On Firm Performance & Ceo Compensation, Dishant Pandya Jan 2021

A Study On The Effect Of The Mandated Change In Board Composition On Firm Performance & Ceo Compensation, Dishant Pandya

ETD Archive

In this dissertation, I examine the long-run effect of the 2003 mandated change in board composition on firm performance and CEO compensation. In the first essay, I examine the impact of changes in firm performance to shed light on the debate between agency and insider-knowledge theorists. Agency theorists argue that installing an independent board would increase monitoring of management, thereby enhancing firm performance. In contrast, the insider-knowledge hypothesis suggests that an independent board lacks valuable insider information for effective advisory functions and, hence, is detrimental to firm performance. In the second essay, I investigate the effect of the mandate on …

Neighborhood Effects Of Social Captial On Children And Its Meaning For Adulthood Outcomes, Jinhee Yun Jan 2021

Neighborhood Effects Of Social Captial On Children And Its Meaning For Adulthood Outcomes, Jinhee Yun

ETD Archive

Individuals’ residential location strongly affects their personal access to opportunity, such as obtaining sufficient public goods and services. In addition, the neighborhood environment shapes the outcomes of their children when they reach adulthood. One explanation for these neighborhood effects on children is social capital. This study reconceptualizes social capital based on Pierre Bourdieu’s Capital theory (1984; 2011) to resolve unexplained gaps in existing social capital theory and aims to analyze empirically the impact of various forms of neighborhood social capital in childhood on adult outcomes. This study categorizes social capital into two types: relation-based social capital (relationships within a neighborhood) …

Is Hearing Loss Over-Diagnosed Due To Impaired Cognition In Elderly Patients?, Emilee A. Witt Jan 2021

Is Hearing Loss Over-Diagnosed Due To Impaired Cognition In Elderly Patients?, Emilee A. Witt

ETD Archive

The prevalence of hearing loss due to old age is rapidly growing amongst the elderly population impacting over 450 million people worldwide making it the third most chronic disease (Lohler et al., 2019). While highly prevalent, hearing loss still remains one of the least studied factors, yet it has one of the greatest impacts on public health as 67% of adults age 70 and up have a hearing loss that impedes daily communication (Lin & Albert, 2014). Research has found a connection between hearing loss and cognitive deficits. People with hearing loss experience cognitive decline 30% to 40% faster than …

A Test Of Specificity Between Emotion Regulation Repertoires And Affect: A Prospective Investigation, Zachary Demoss Jan 2021

A Test Of Specificity Between Emotion Regulation Repertoires And Affect: A Prospective Investigation, Zachary Demoss

ETD Archive

Depression is marked by depressive affects which consists of dysphoric mood reflected by increased levels of negative affect (NA), and anhedonia which is characterized by decreased positive affect (PA). The dysregulation of affective states that characterizes depressive disorders may reflect emotion regulation deficits. Prior work has frequently linked maladaptive responses with depression, while evidence linking adaptive responses and depression has been mixed. Additionally, emerging evidence has shown a degree of specificity between emotion regulation and affect. Therefore, the present study examined whether emotion regulation responses show specificity with NA and PA across 7-day and 12-month periods within a large sample …

Model-Free Optimization Of Trajectory And Impedance Parameters On Exercise Robots With Applications To Human Performance And Rehabilitation, Humberto De Las Casas Zolezzi Jan 2021

Model-Free Optimization Of Trajectory And Impedance Parameters On Exercise Robots With Applications To Human Performance And Rehabilitation, Humberto De Las Casas Zolezzi

ETD Archive

This dissertation focuses on the study and optimization of human training and its physiological effects through the use of advanced exercise machines (AEMs). These machines provide an invaluable contribution to advanced training by combining exercise physiology with technology. Unlike conventional exercise machines (CEMs), AEMs provide controllable trajectories and impedances by using electric motors and control systems. Therefore, they can produce various patterns even in the absence of gravity. Moreover, the ability of the AEMs to target multiple physiological systems makes them the best available option to improve human performance and rehabilitation. During the early stage of the research, the physiological …

Analysis Of A Gravity Hinge System For Wind Deflecting Structures Of Roof Top Wind Turbines., Andrew M.D. Moss Jan 2021

Analysis Of A Gravity Hinge System For Wind Deflecting Structures Of Roof Top Wind Turbines., Andrew M.D. Moss

ETD Archive

This study presents a mathematical modeling of behavior of a wind deflecting structure having trap doors supported by gravity hinges. The function of the trap doors is to be fully closed at low wind speeds (under 6.1 m/s), thereby increasing the wind speed, and directing the air flow to a pair of roof top wind turbines (1.3 kW nameplate rating). With wind speeds higher than 6.2 m/s the trap doors will start to open, letting the air move though the structure rather than directing the air flow to the turbines. The opening and closing of the trap doors take place …

Chlorine Decay And Pathogen Cross Contamination Dynamics In Fresh Produce Washing Process, Mohammadreza Dehghan Abnavi Jan 2021

Chlorine Decay And Pathogen Cross Contamination Dynamics In Fresh Produce Washing Process, Mohammadreza Dehghan Abnavi

ETD Archive

In this study, we developed a comprehensive mathematical model to predict the free chlorine (FC) concentration and bacterial cross-contamination during produce wash processes. A second-order chemical reaction model for FC decay which utilizes a proportion of chemical oxygen demand (COD) as an indicator of organic content in the wash water was employed, yielding an apparent reaction rate of 9.45 ± 0.22 x 10-4 ^M-1.min-1. Using a proportion of successive changes in COD in the wash water due to produce washing, typically ranging from 6 to 11% across produce types, the model was able to consistently predict experimental FC levels, however, …

Dispersion, Self-Assembly, And Rheological Characterization Of Dna-Complexed Boron Nitride Nanosystems, Venkateswara Rao Kode Jan 2021

Dispersion, Self-Assembly, And Rheological Characterization Of Dna-Complexed Boron Nitride Nanosystems, Venkateswara Rao Kode

ETD Archive

Stable liquid dispersions and the subsequent self-assembly of boron nitride (BN) nanostructures are a vital precursor for translating their exceptional electrical, mechanical, thermal, and optical properties into large-area assemblies with controlled properties. However, achieving individually dispersed BN nanomaterials including BN nanotubes (BNNTs) and hexagonal BN nanosheets (hBN) in almost any solvent has been hindered by strong van der Waals interactions among nanomaterials. In this dissertation work, we reported a comprehensive study on developing an efficient dispersion, self-assembly, and rheological characterization of BN nanomaterials. Particularly, we reported a highly efficient dispersions of BNNTs through noncovalent complexation while exploiting the solvent-nanotube-dispersant interactions …

Colloidal interactions play an important role in determining the macroscopic properties of different materials. Recent work in this area has focused on the role anisotropic particles play in these materials. This thesis summarizes work conducted on the dynamics and interactions of an anisotropic colloid particle near a solid wall. Specifically, the methodology for conducting Total Internal Reflection Microscopy (TIRM) on anisotropic colloidal systems near a boundary was developed. This new method is called “Scattering Morphology Resolved - TIRM” (SMR-TIRM). Simulations of the Brownian motion of a sphere comprising hemispheres of different composition (i.e. a Janus particle) very near a wall …

Holomorphic Embedded Load-Flow Method's Application On Three-Phase Distribution System With Unbalanced Wyeconnected Loads, Nitin Gupta Jan 2021

Holomorphic Embedded Load-Flow Method's Application On Three-Phase Distribution System With Unbalanced Wyeconnected Loads, Nitin Gupta

ETD Archive

With increasing load and aging grid infrastructure, an accurate study of power flow is very important for operation and planning studies. The study involves a numerical calculation of unknown parameters, such as voltage magnitude, angle, net complex power injection at buses and power flow on branches. The performance of traditional iterative power flow methods, such as Newton-Raphson, depends on initial starting point, does not guarantee solution for heavily loaded, and poor convergence for unbalanced radial power system. Holomorphic load embedding is a non-iterative and deterministic method for finding steady-state solutions of any power system network. The method involves converting voltage …

Formal Affective Strategies In Contemporary African Diasporic Feminist Texts, Zuzanna E. Koziatek Jan 2021

Formal Affective Strategies In Contemporary African Diasporic Feminist Texts, Zuzanna E. Koziatek

ETD Archive

While scholars who investigate the works of African diasporic authors Edwidge Danticat, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Claudia Rankine acknowledge the importance between form and audience in their works, critics have either yet to fully recognize how and/or for what purpose each author implements specific techniques. Paying close attention to what I propose are formal affective strategies in Danticat’s Everything Inside, Adichie’s The Thing Around Your Neck, and Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric, allows us to see how each author infuses experimental forms that are strategically bound to how their future readers will react to their texts with the hope that …

Liquid Dispersions And Fiber Spinning Of Boron Nitride Nanotubes Combined With Polyvinyl Alcohol, Joe Farid Khoury Jan 2021

Liquid Dispersions And Fiber Spinning Of Boron Nitride Nanotubes Combined With Polyvinyl Alcohol, Joe Farid Khoury

ETD Archive

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have promising optical, mechanical, and thermal properties which make them one of the most promising material candidates for fabricating protective and multifunctional fibers with remarkable thermal and chemical stabilities, electrically insulating, and ultraviolet radiation shielding capabilities. Here, we have demonstrated an effective method to produce stable dispersions of BNNTs coated by surfactants and fabricate continuous BNNTs and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite fibers via a wet-spinning approach. BNNTs/polymer composite fibers were spun by combining SDC-coated BNNT dispersions with aqueous solutions of PVA and coagulating the resulting mixtures in the flow of a solvent, such as methanol (MeOH), …

Mechanical Transformations: The Active Roles Of Machines In British Industrial-Era Writings, Julia R. Halamek Jan 2021

Mechanical Transformations: The Active Roles Of Machines In British Industrial-Era Writings, Julia R. Halamek

ETD Archive

Industrialization defined nineteenth-century Britain, bringing large-scale changes to the social order. Observers perceived that machines stood at the heart of these changes as much as inventors, manufacturers, and operatives, if not more so. A range of writers expressed their awareness of the transformative power of technology by endowing machines with a sense of life and influence according to four broad characterizations: machines as instruments of civilizational advancement disguised as mundane tools, organic life, bringers of order, and near-mythical embodiments of power. Critics of industry coopted such lofty language and turned it on its head to depict machines as destructive, sometimes …

Making Sense Of The Gutters: How Advanced-Level English Teachers Use Graphic Novels, Casey Posey Matthews Jan 2021

Making Sense Of The Gutters: How Advanced-Level English Teachers Use Graphic Novels, Casey Posey Matthews

ETD Archive

The English Language Arts (ELA) canon has been continuously replicated in K12 education due to the tendency that teachers frequently teach what was taught to them. Current national and state curricula as well as the Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate guidelines and suggestions do not dictate specific texts to be taught, yet many of the suggestions given to high school English teachers perpetuate the use of the Western canon. Outside of the classroom, the world in which our students live is becoming increasingly multimodal which is a contrast to “verbcentric” classrooms. Graphic novels are one answer to integrating the increasingly multimodal world …

Work volition as it relates to perceived career barriers for marginalized populations has become a growing area of research in the field of vocational psychology (Blustein, 2004, 2013). Such research through the psychology of working framework (PWF) has focused on highlighting the strengths and challenges of career-development variables for marginalized groups, and identifying coping variables to aid in the development of an individual’s working needs. Two constructs that have been supported throughout PWF research, work volition and perceived career barriers, focus on detailing the negative impacts of ethnic and gender discrimination on career development (Duffy et al., 2016; Gee, 2002; …

Play Together: How Watching The Cooperative Play Of Violent Video Games Can Positively Influence Dyadic Relationships, Matthew Erxleben Jan 2021

Play Together: How Watching The Cooperative Play Of Violent Video Games Can Positively Influence Dyadic Relationships, Matthew Erxleben

ETD Archive

Media effects research has shown that video games can have both antisocial and prosocial effects, depending on the content of the game. Individuals who play violent video games tend to display more aggressive attitudes and behaviors, while those who play games with prosocial content tend to display more prosocial, or helping, attitudes and behavior. The context in which a video game is played has also been shown to influence media effects, with competitive play leading to increased aggression while cooperative play leads to increased prosociality. However, the existing literature has not examined how these effects might influence the interpersonal relationships …
