The Miles-Crook Controversy, Katherine Shepard Jan 1936

The Miles-Crook Controversy, Katherine Shepard

History ETDs

The accusations and resulting explanations in the Miles-Crook newspaper encounters revolved around four questions. First, had Miles disobeyed his orders in accepting a conditional surrender. The chief difficulty here was that no one seemed able to discover just what terms or promises Miles had made to Geronimo. Second, had not General Miles and Captain Lawton received the credit for the surrender which should have been bestowed upon Lieutenant Gatewood, who with two Chiricahua scouts, sought out the hostile camp and arranged that the Indians should go to the border and give themselves up to Miles. Third, had not Miles, after …

History Of The Carlisle Indian School, Beulah Fitz

The Francisco Villa Raid On Columbus, New Mexico, Mary Stirrat Jan 1935

The Francisco Villa Raid On Columbus, New Mexico, Mary Stirrat

History ETDs

Mexico, traditionally a land of revolution and bandits, and the United States, traditionally a land of democracy and wealth, have for many years presented mutual problems. This situation exists because the people of the United States do not understand their Mexican neighbors, nor do the people of Mexico understand their American neighbors. A small group of scientific men in the United States understand and know the Mexican people; a still smaller group of Mexicans understand the American people. Probably politicians, newspaper men, and financiers, because of personal interests, are not to be found in this group; President Wilson may have …

The Opening Of The Black Hills In 1876, Marie Flekke Jan 1935

The Opening Of The Black Hills In 1876, Marie Flekke

History ETDs

In the following chapters, I shall outline the purposes and results of the government's Indian Policy in the Black Hills. It is my aim to present the history of the struggles, problems, inconsistencies, and complications in an effort to open the Black Hills to its own citizens. This account represents only one phase of the United States Indian Policy in the nineteenth century. The struggles of the red man against the exploitation of the white man were many and varied in their nature, but the more powerful white man ultimately successful in achieving his aim.

History Of The Albuquerque Indian School, Lillie Mckinney Dec 1934

History Of The Albuquerque Indian School, Lillie Mckinney

History ETDs

Introduction

The civilization of the American Indian has been slow, difficult and expensive for our government. Different administrations have tried to different policies. Usually some method of force was used down to 1876. Force meant the final extinction of the race. About the only education that filtered in among the savages was the result of the labors of the heroic missionaries who established schools among them from 1819-1876 subsidized by meager sums from the government.

The greatest pioneer missionary among the Indians of the Rocky Mountain area was Sheldon Jackson of the Northern Presbyterian Church from 1838-1909, He has been …

A Brief History Of Curry County, New Mexico, Norvell Glynn Tate Jan 1934

A Brief History Of Curry County, New Mexico, Norvell Glynn Tate

History ETDs

If the ranchers of the eighties and nineties were to return now, they would find a vastly changed country. No longer is it an area of large ranches and open ranges. The barbed wire and the "nester" have triumphed. It is now a farming country built around Clovis, the county seat. Clovis has grown from a railroad switch to a town of approximately eight thousand population. Paved roads run across the county in the place of the cow trails. There has been no "boom" period for the county, but years of consistent growth. Not all the years have been good …

The Range Cattle Industry In New Mexico, Roy Willoughby Jan 1933

The Range Cattle Industry In New Mexico, Roy Willoughby

History ETDs

The range cattle industry in the west was the outgrowth of a combination of circumstances that first brought it into existence and then put an end to it forever. Contrasting with the magnitude and permanent effects of the industry was its short duration, a period of little more than two decades.

The Policy Of The United States Government In Its Relation With The Navajo Indians, Katherine Diana Brown Jan 1932

The Policy Of The United States Government In Its Relation With The Navajo Indians, Katherine Diana Brown

History ETDs

Although much has been written in criticism of the policy pursued by the United States government in its relation with the Navajo Indians, no investigations have yet been made to determine the nature and development of this policy. The writer chose the subject of this thesis with the hope that she might discover evidence that would make it possible to answer these questions; having lived in close contact and association with the Navajos during her entire life she naturally feels a personal interest in their problems and welfare.

The History Of Oldham County, Texas, T. C. Israel Jan 1932

The History Of Oldham County, Texas, T. C. Israel

History ETDs

The author's aim in this thesis, has been to trace the history of Oldham County through a period of about sixty years, noting the various changes in its economic life. The present stock farming and wheat culture era was preceded by several decades of ranching, which in turn was antedated by the Indian period. Historians in the future, will tell the story of the breaking up of the large farms and ranches into smaller units to provide farms for our increasing population.

The Monroe Doctrine And The Empire Of Maximilian, 1861-67, David Lopez Campa Jan 1930

The Monroe Doctrine And The Empire Of Maximilian, 1861-67, David Lopez Campa

History ETDs

In this short discussion of an instance often referred to as a "splendid vindication" of the Monroe Doctrine, the author intends to give as impartial a treatment of the problem chosen as human limitations permit. The Monroe Doctrine during the French Intervention in Mexico and during the Civil War was, contrary to the assertions of some American historians, a dead letter.

A Thirty Year Educational History Of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Elizabeth Strong Shamberger Jan 1928

A Thirty Year Educational History Of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Elizabeth Strong Shamberger

History ETDs

It has seemed to me that an educational history of the city in which I was born and reared would be an interesting and worth-while subject for a Master's Thesis: interesting to me because the names of men and women I have always known are written indelibly into its pages; worth-while to others because the account is as authentic and unbiased as a faithful study of the documents obtainable could make it.
