The Proposed Transvaal Labour Importation Ordinance In British Circles During 1904, Doris Hartrick

History ETDs

This thesis investigates the interest of Great Britain in the affairs of one of her colonies as it passed through a crucial period. The Establishment Of Central American Independence, R. Gordon B. Kenyon Jun 1949

The Establishment Of Central American Independence, R. Gordon B. Kenyon

History ETDs

When Spain began her conquest of Central America in the early sixteenth century, she had to contend almost as much with geography as with Indian resistance. The Mayas opposed the Spanish with both the strengths and weaknesses of a decentralized civilization. There was no center to be conquered such as Tenochtitlán in the Aztec Empire, and where the submission of some tribal groups might be peaceful, others singly or in coalition gave stubborn resistance.

The Southern Colorado Coal Strike Of 1927-1928 And New Mexico's Preventive Measures, Charles J. Bayard

History ETDs

During the latter part of 1927 and the early part of 1928 Colorado had the difficult problem of a paralyzing strike in its coal mining areas. The actual causes of the walkouts and picketing, which occurred off and on from August until late February, were numerous. As is only natural, both sides made charges, counter-charges, and refutations.

John Maunsell, The King's Clerk 1230-1265, Joseph O. Baylen

History ETDs

The study of John Maunsell, the king's clerk, is the product of a search which began in the fall of 1947. As a newcomer to the field of medieval history, the interest and inspiration for this topic were found in the seminar of medieval history offered by Professor Josiah Cox Russel. The opportunity which he offered his students to investigate and study Maunsell was due to the fine collection of sources on the history of medieval England in the library of the University of New Mexico. Out of an examination of these materials and under the guidance of Professor Russel, …

The Place Of English Party Politics As A Factor In The Causes Of The War Of Jenkins' Ear, 1739, Ruth Patty Rosenzweig May 1949

The Place Of English Party Politics As A Factor In The Causes Of The War Of Jenkins' Ear, 1739, Ruth Patty Rosenzweig

History ETDs

That curiously titled incident, "The War of Jenkins' Ear," has received varied treatment by historians. It has been a challenge to the justifiers of English imperialism, and it has attracted those interested in early colonial policies and lovers of the piquant. The earliest historians interested in the war were preoccupied with Jenkins and the ear itself. Later historians stressed the international causes of the war--the colonial commercial and territorial dissension between England and Spain--the two protagonists in the war. While these international antagonisms were the underlying causes of the war, they were not precipitating factors. Study of the sources shows …

The Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, As Interpreted By The New York Times Versus The London Times, Eugene W. Laurent

The Purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes expressed in The New York Times of January 1, 1936, to July 1, 1937, as compared with those of The London Times of the same dates, regarding three major aspects of the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939. Following a brief account of the historical events of the preceding years, from the beginning of the dictatorship in September, 1923, to the outbreak of the civil war in July, 1936, are the major problems: the causes of the war, the internal affairs of Spain as factors in the conflict, and the international politics …

The Civil War Diary Of John A. Blair, John Alan Blair Mar 1949

The Civil War Diary Of John A. Blair, John Alan Blair

History ETDs

Although the Civil War Diary of John A. Blair does not shed new light on the cataclysmic events of the war, it, however, contributes a picture emanating from scenes of troubled times in the life and times in the United States.

The diary reflects impressions felt by this Southern officer in his 30th year, of actions in an area and in a period upon which the eyes of the world were focused, and which historians have long attempted to understand. His viewpoints are those of a patriotic Southern soldier who saw righteousness in the cause of the Confederacy and shared …
