The purpose of this thesis as originally conceived was an attempt to study how the South-Carolina Gazette reported the series of crises that led up to American Revolution and whenever possible, to see how the newspaper influenced the movement. The other Charles-Town newspapers of the period, the South-Carolina and American General Gazette and the South-Carolina Gazette; and Country Journal, were also studied as means of checking the coverage of the Gazette. His parents Frank O. and Maria (Hilton) Bursum, were natives of Norway. Few army officers of the post-Civil War era contributed more to the destruction of the Indian barrier to westward expansion than did Brig. Gen. Ranald Slidell Mackenzie. Yet, despite his importance to the military history of the American frontier, little is known of the man. Few if any students have exploited archival materials, while an absence of Mackenzie's personal papers has encouraged superficial sketches of his career.
