Carlos Chávez: Exponent Of Nationalism, Katharine Ferris Nutt

History ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to present an account of the endeavors of Carlos Chávez to reveal Mexican nationalism through music. The study begins with a brief survey of Mexico's history with emphasis upon the presence of caciquismo and caudillismo. Politically, Mexican nationalism is a blend of the dynastic nationalism of sixteenth century Spain and the popular nationalism of the late eighteenth century. Ethnologically, Mexican Nationalism includes elements of Spanish, Indian, and mestizo culture. During the century following Independence as well as during Spanish domination the art and music of both Indians and mestizos were thrust aside in favour …

A Historical Study Of The Port Of Hull During The Thirteenth Century, Floyd Winfield Snyder

History ETDs

The history of the port of Hull during the thirteenth century has presented a problem for historians in which has never been completely solved. This problem is centered around the traditional building of Hull in 1293 by Edward I. According to this tradition, Hull did not exist until this time. Evidence in the chronicle of the monastery of Meaux and those close and patent rolls, however, indicates that Hull was a port of some importance in the thirteenth century.

The Alaskan Boundary dispute consists of a background of territorial claims made to certain lands along the Northwest Coast of our continent by the United States, Great Britain and Russia. In the thirteenth century Genghis Khan crossed Siberia and had reached the shores of the Pacific Ocean. This ocean separated him from Alaska. What is believed to be the first sighting of land which now constitutes Alaska, by a European, was made on July 15, 1741 at 2:00 A.M. at 55 degrees 21 minutes north latitude and 61 degrees 55 minutes west longitude. This sighting was made by an expedition …

The Lusignans In England, 1247-1258, Harold S. Snellgrove

History ETDs

I do not claim to have collected and incorporated in this essay every available scrap of evidence which relates to Henry III and his half-brothers. Indeed, in the beginning the purpose of this study proposed to be nothing more than a picture, -- a picture of the methods by which a feudal prince rewarded his subjects. As time went on, certain constitutional issues arose. I have tried to point out wherein Henry III violated the charters in rewarding his brothers, but I have not attempted to give a lengthy discussion of this phase of the story. I have, however, reached …
