History Of The El Paso Area 1680-1692, Vina Wals May 1951

History Of The El Paso Area 1680-1692, Vina Wals

History ETDs

For twelve years after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 what was left of Spanish New Mexico was scattered through the El Paso district, with El Paso serving through most of that period as the official capital. Possibly because the area has been a sort of everyman's land, involved in North Mexican, Texan, and New Mexican history, it has been either neglected or distorted by historians. The drama of the beginning and of the end of the twelve years has been exploited, and one excursion into the middle period completed. There has been no treatment of the twelve years as a …

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt May 1951

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt

History ETDs

The following discussion is in part the history of nationalism in the fine arts of Mexico, as a spontaneous expression and as one artificially stimulated. Of equal concern, however, are the State's endeavors to channel nationalism by controlling the bellas artes through subsidy, decree, and law, and finally by the creation of a national institute or theater. The writer has endeavored to reveal both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the government's control and to render some idea as to the extent to which cultural nationalism may forge permanent unity among the Mexicans.

Nationalism: A Search For Unity The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katherine Ferris Nutt

History ETDs

Nationalism is commonly interpreted as evidence of an "inferiority complex," a kind of adolescent attitude on the part of a nation to assert itself in lieu of holding rank as a world power. A more kindly concept of nationalism defines it as a "declaration of independence," an inherent desire of a people to stand in their own strength. Nearly always the existence of nationalistic attitudes implies a need for unity and a desire for common ideals and values, for one tradition. Nationalism may also mean that a country possesses pride and self-respect, that it is aware of its own ability …

Tourism In New Mexico: The Promotional Activities Of The New Mexico State Tourist Bureau, 1935-1950., Mary Irene Severns

History ETDs

The growth of the tourist business has been a stimulus to social and economic life in New Mexico. Tourist attractions are natural to the state, yet except for upkeep and preservation, tourism does not have to be cultivated to any great extent with high capital expenditures to produce results. The very attractions which please the tourist may become a permanent source of pleasure to the people of New Mexico. Few residents of the state do not profit in some way, either directly or indirectly, from the tourists.

The Union Army And The Knoxville Region Of East Tennessee 1861-1865, Caryl L. Stovell

History ETDs

During the Civil War years East Tennessee became politically and strategically important. It was a section strong in Unionism and natural defenses. Under Confederate control life was difficult for those loyal to the Union, and they pled for liberation. But East Tennessee was difficult to enter because of the mountains which surround it. Far-sighted generals saw that an occupying army would have to surmount the problems or supply. Even when the section was freed from Confederate rule, the civilians were no better off as far as peace and the comforts of life were concerned. The opposing armies, ill-clad and ill-fed, …
