Some understanding of the state of native labor in the Indies is fundamental to an appreciation of post-Conquest society in the New World. The social and economic implications of Indian servitude are of such magnitude that they transcend other more dramatic aspects of Spanish domination in the sixteenth century. For Indian labor--certainly in the first decades--was the base upon which Spanish society reated; without it there waa a very real possibility of the abandonment of many American kingdoms. One of the most remarkable stories of Spanish Colonial California concerns the occupation of Alta California after some two hundred years of disinterest. A great number of present-day writers have characterized Spain's 1769 advance into San Diego as one initiated by religious motive. The pseudonym "Sacred Expedition," in fact, underscores that belief. However, this pious theme ignores the world and local situations which then existed. This thesis deals with the military career and New Mexico governorship of Facundo Malgares. His career, from approximately 1800 to 1822, after Mexico had become independent of Spain, illustrated the operation of Spanish institutions during the last days of Spanish rule in the northern interior province of Mexico. Of special importance were problems associated with Spanish-Italian and Anglo-Spanish relations when the Indian was still powerful and the United States was beginning its westward expansion. Much has been written relative to the history of the early discoveries of California. In almost all works treating of early California, the name of Sebastian Vizcaino appears, but apart from mention of his voyage to California in 1602, little more is said relative to this explorer.
